Well I went in here last night, what a transformation!

It is now a trendy pub called Ivan's retreat, the toilets smell nice too!

This place makes a Wetherspoons pub look like a quaint country pub.
Essentially a huge bright room with random furniture dotted about it. The punters are either gig goers or dodgy locals who eye you suspicously when you walk past.
The toilets are beyond comment and if you can get served in under 10 minutes you're a better man than I. Seriously, I walked out the last time after being ignored about six times in favour of people who came to the bar after me.
Yes it's cheap but the adage 'you get what you paid for' has never been so fitting. Find somewhere else.

Oh my goodness, do bars as bad as this really exist? Im still scratching my head. The Goose is a huge barn of a place with absolutely no redeeming qualities. Its bare, dull, tatty and just completely lacking. Cross your legs. Do not visit the toilets and just what the hell was that stench? The service was equally atrocious. After waiting for ten minutes, expect the staff to struggle to pour your pint, then get told there is problems with the gas, before pouring you an alternative pint that is either watery or with a huge frothy head. Yikes. It is cheap, but please, take the advice from someone who genuinely enjoys pubs and dishing out advice, dont visit. One more time, dont visit. Wednesday (12th Dec) was a grey day in terms of pubs for this reviewer.

One visit to here will change your life forever. A disgrace. A show up. A stain on Brixton.

The horrific memories of visiting this shambles of a pub will stay with you till the grave. The funny smells, the dour decor, the random bumps and lumps in the floor, the cesspit that is the toilets, the rude locals, the Del Boy Trotter wannabe manager, the brain melting background music..

The glasses are never clean, the kitchen is never open, the disabled toilets smell like a sewage plant, the regular toilet is always flooded, the whole pub is falling apart. Its no surprise its always empty but for the hardcore dole collectors dotted round this hellhole. In fact hang on, does this pub even HAVE a manager??? Because Im not aware of one. No half-decent manager would let a joint get into such a sorry state

AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!

i used to work here several years ago(i was desperate)and in the end i tipped a pint over some crack head as he kept grabbing me when i walked past(was barred for life).but i went in the other day to see if it was any different.and lo and behold, the second i walked in, there some guy at a table taking a pull on a crack pipe he'd made out of a miniature spirit bottle......urgh.never again.what a disguting place.

Large ex-Firkin pub mainly populated by the areas undesirables and those looking for a cheap beer prior to being ripped off in the Academy round the corner. Naturally gets heaving on gig nights. Of the 5 Real Ales on my visit, only 1 was on the ubiquitous Xmas ale Santas Little Helper (this was in December!). London Pride, Tetleys, Green King IPA + 1 other were all off which doesnt say much for the cellar management. The pub itself has very little merits in the way of class or architecture. The ugly glass front leads to a cavernous, soulless, plain and uninteresting giant shoebox of an interior. The multiple TV screens all had virtually unwatchable picture quality (widescreen - they need you!). The music was loud and monotonous and the modern art prints looked they have come from a 99p shop. The whole place is totally devoid of character and aspires to do nothing other than to pull in numbers and meet sales targets. This really is a dreadful place that exists solely for tasteless people who are desperate for little more than a cheap drink.

my god this is the worst pub ever, full of scumbags, even more than the wetherspoons opposite. the bar manager was rude, obnoxious and arrogant beyond belief. do NOT go here, EVER

It's not a Wetherspoons.................The Goose pubs are a seperate chain.

Is this the only wetherspoon to have music? Good place to have a drink before a gig. I was there latish on a Saturday and met up with a sizable bunch of mates. We all found a seat and had no bother but the service was v slow and the ashtrays overflowing.
Hit it and quit it.

dire place

Fairly dreadful place. It took fifteen minutes to get served although the place wasn't rammed, as the staff only seemed willing to served people at the end of the bars. Having taken and forgotten our drinks order twice, the bloke serving disappeared into the office for about seven minutes leaving us to wonder if he wanted paying. The music was over-loud, the tables were covered in glasses and plates, and most of the beer was off. Yes, it's cheap, but that's about it.

Went here last night before The Cult gig at the Academy and it was quite dreadful to be honest. Got to the bar and got pounced on by one of Brixtons less pleasant residents. Found our friends and stood with them - they were sitting opposite a couple who were later joined by a friend. They didn't buy a drink in the 3hours we were there - they did however keep a very close eye on everyone in the vicinitys handbag!!

My mate got groped when we went up to the bar again and my male friend found someones used syringe in the loo.

The best thing about this pub - trying to look on a positive side - the drink is cheap! Double Jack Daniels and coke is 2.25 and the barmaid/men were pleasant to us and made sure we didn't have to wait too long to get served.

Bad things - strange people hanging round not drinking watching bags, loos were revolting, men wandering round groping/irritating girls

I think I'll go elsewhere for a drink pre-Academy from now on

My rating is solely for the cheap drink

Ideal pub if you want a few cheap drinks before a gig at the academy. around 1.50 a pint, screens show either music vids or footie.

Good for a couple of cheap drinks before a gig at the Academy.

Went in last night to find no ale, Guinness or Strongbow on tap. We had to choose between Carlsberg, Stella and Tetley's.
Almost wish i had gone to the Wetherspoons across the road.

A pretty good place to grab a beer before the wallet-bothering horror of the Academy, a nice atmosphere though you'll be hard-pressed to get a seat.

Had Tiger on 9/11/05 before Sigur Ros. UV toilets too, so make sure you're clean...

Better than average Goose & Granite pub on Brixton High Road that is ideal for a few pints prior to a gig at The Academy round the corner. Staff are quick and efficient and there is always a nice friendly buzz about the place. Beer is cheap and largely very good. Can get very busy but it's quite spacious so you should find a decent spot to stand and enjoy your drink.
Mr.Monkfish - 22 Aug 2005 10:03
Probably a better choice than the Wetherspoons across the road...

not a bad place.
only been there on two occasions when i have gone to gigs at the academy.

Jackrum - 21 Apr 2005 22:36
Used to be a Firkin which on the occasions I visited was always welcoming. Gone downhill a bit I think since it became the Goose.

I suppose its Ok - its certainly better than the Wtherspoons across the road (what a recommendation!)
