A visit to our local Chef & Brewer Pub, The Bull Inn in Goring-by-Sea led to a grave disappointment. The pub has had a chequered past but my wife and I are always willing to give places another chance. Unfortunately, The Bull Inn pub, the Chef & brewer chain or the current management have not improved the pub or its food.
To be fair I had the sea bass and scallop risotto, which was not too bad. The sea bass fillets however, were of a size that most self-respecting fishermen would throw back as undersize and the scallops (two very small ones) were cooked quite nicely, but at £13.55 I didn’t feel was value for money.
Unfortunately, my wife didn’t fare so well. She ordered the marinated spiced cod. She asked for chips instead of the roast new potatoes and for the sauce to be on the side. When served, the so called marinated cod was not marinated but smeared with some dry spice mix. This should have been served with a reading of the ‘last rights’ as it was so over was over cooked, that we couldn’t identify whether it was fish, chicken or leather! The sauce was on the side but they had left off the peas, roast onions and rocket salad altogether. We had to request for the meals to be taken away, warmed up and corrected. They were a bit reluctant to do this, but the onions and peas were sorted… no sign of the rocket though. Interestingly, no-one came back to check if we were happy with our meals, or to offer some kind of compensation. In fact, they seemed to be avoiding our area of the pub! We both felt that this meal was not worth the money we had spent and had it been billed at the end of the meal, they would not have received the full amount charged.
I would have to say we have visited various other eateries both independent and chain. Worthing is crying out for good quality, fair priced eateries. Unfortunately, The Bull Inn falls far short of our reasonable expectations. Are we on our own in our search for a pub which serves decent food and fair prices?

Visited a couple of weeks ago as part of a group of ten and found the pub perfectly acceptable. The service was good, the Timothy Taylor was good, the food was good and it arrived together.
I had a mixed grill and it was really nice and my friends all seemed to enjoy their meals.
Only thing is that pub shuts at 11 on the dot - be nice to stay open a little longer to enjoy a fw more beers!

We had dinner here today and I must say it wasn't bad the food was very nice, but the service wasn't brillant. The food was slow, they did apologise; we had a toddler with us which was not that great for being so late with our food!! As anyone realizes with young ones they don't undestand!!! So in this case I find it not suitable, but it was pleasant, enjoyable pub.
I found the maneger quite rude and could be more helpful, will go there again but proberly not with a small child!!

I would also like to point out that 'alarm bells' ringing due to how quiet we were has more to do with xfactor and strictly come dancing than our standards or food quality. Indeed you would have been unable to get a table during lunchtime! Apologies, however I feel that I have the right to reply when deemed necessary.

As the 'landlady' or manager as is the correct term of this business I would like to point out that the below statement which is attributed to the 'landlady' is not me, but a member of the team, and an incorrect identification. As a note, this complaint has been dealt with privately also, as we pride ourselves on doing with any issue brought to our attention.. and the cutlery buckets have been removed from use. The offending bucket was missed in checks and was disposed of immediately that day.. Thanks!!

Last month we heard that The Bulls Head was open again and decided to give it a try as we use to live nearby several years ago.
For my husbands birthday I booked a table for six.
We arrived to an empty pub at 7.30 pm on a Saturday night. Alarm bells should have rang out then.
We ordered a mixed sharing starter which was great. very enjoyable.
Having taken a little time to eat, we then ordered our main meals. The vast majority of the food chosen was unavailable. On our third attempt to order, I just said "a salad" not wanting to order again and be turned down. 5 mins later, staff informed us that "they were so busy, they had sold out of salad at 8.30 pm!!" to make it simple, we said what do you have available and so all ordered scampi and chips. The food arrived, late and over cooked. One meal did not come at all and nor did we have any cutlery. When the cutlery arrived, it came in a bucket. upon taking out a fork, it had food attached. looking into the bucket, it was rusty, dirty and the cutlery was sitting in water with rotten food at the base! when the final meal arrived, we complained and the poor member of staff was so ashamed. Two of the meals were not touched as the scampi was so dark the fish was like bullets. The landlady came over and said "try next weekend when we have a new menu" no apology at all.
We left quickly and very disappointed with the entire Birthday meal. One round of drinks was taken off our final bill and two of our friends went home without a main meal at all.
Not a good experience, but at least one member of staff - a young man made the effort to come out to our car and say "i am so sorry".

My partner and I are locals at The Bull - we had friends visiting from the Netherlands and decided to go for dinner on Sunday night. We arrived around 1930 without having made a prior booking. Although there were 10 of us, (not always easy to accommodate at short-notice) we were given a table straight away.

Despite them possibly being short-staffed that night, we were well looked after, the service and food were both good and our friends really enjoyed the experience of a great traditional English pub.

Big thanks to all the staff - we all had a great night and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Bull to others.

Nice choice of beer however,
please do not go here if you are hungary.
Bank Holiday Monday - order 2 starters and 2 mains, so far so good.
40 minutes later, a prawn cocktail (prawns and iceberg lettice) on a warm plate and baked mushrooms (well 2 small open mushrooms stacked on top of each other wth a small piece of cheese between) served cold.
1 hour later with no sign of a main course we demanded a refund and left.

Please please, if 'chef' is having a day off, give in and shut the kitchen if your reputation means anything to you - we will not come back!

We booked for a 2pm sunday lunch for 6 adults and 1 baby. We were told immediately there was a 40 min wait for food which was odd as the restuarant section was not full. We ordered food and drinks. Drinks were a bit slow arrivng, then the starter arrived. Tasty soup and crusty roll. The the wait for the main course started, we waited, and waited, and waited. Then after about 45 mins with no update my wife asked the waitress how long it would be. She received a very snappy brusque reponse. The food arrived - which was ok but marred by the wait. Dessert was served fairly promptly afterwards but I thought the crumble was overpoweringly sweet. Pub nicely fitted out, loos ok, beer choice ok.

Overall, not a great sunday lunch experience. Short staffed, I know 11 for started, main and dessert (fixed menu) ain't bad but the wait was just too long.

Ok well.. The Sharps doom Bar was excellent 10/10. Also 2 further ales on.
As for comments on pricing they do three course for 11. Decor nice so everything you want from a traditional pub but unfortuantly we had to wait and wait for food. Other customers complaining of poor quality. A cold meze to share took over an hour and still had items missing. ok it was a busy(for them)
tuesday lunch. Very apologetic staff . If they made the menu smaller and fresher it could make life a lot easier for the kitchen.
Well i ended up having three beatiful pints and would go back to drink.

Third time lucky (or not).
1st attempt - wanted to go in for a drink (pre smoking ban) and asked for a non smoking table - Answer was, no, sorry you need to order food for that!

2nd attempt (for a meal) - sorry we have a party in and (athough the party was being served and other tables in another area had free tables) we cannot serve food as we have a drains problem!

Not to be outdone..
3rd attempt - very busy in bar but dining room areas was half empty. I ordered a specials and hubby the roast......waited.......waited......waited.
When we did get the food it was ok but I know another local that serves much better and cheaper food at a much faster rate!

Went to the Bull over bank hol weekend with my four kids, although pub bursting at the seems nothing was to much trouble for the staff, food was great value for money and served in good time and was check on throughout my visit which these days is unheard of.

Will def be going back especially after the re-fit the manager said was happening in Oct to make a great english pub better

Visited on a lunchtime recently to find the menu has been changed - now it's more expensive and the portions are smaller!
Used to be our lunchtime favourite but after my last visit it has put me right off.

Used to be my local - decent enough food , nce ber garden range of beer and lager is good.
Invaded by the revenue on alunchtime and gets very busy.

Nice clean pub with a good range of food that is reasonably priced. Good selection of beers and a nice courtyard garden with kiddies playground type things. Friendly, attentive staff and nice atmosphere.
Give it a go!
