please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

With many pubs in Manchester closed on New Year's Day, we were pleased to find the Sir Ralph Abercromby open. Although with only one other customer and the barman, it was fairly dead. BT Sport football matches were showing on several TVs. The interior was fairly dark, with a large bar in the middle. Timothy Taylor Landlord is the regular ale. The 5 guests were Sharp's Doom Bar, Moorhouse's White Witch, Stockport Snow Angel & West Coast IPA & Brightside Polaris Express. Two of the ales were being sold at £3 per pint. But surprisingly, it was the full price White Witch that tasted past its best. Tucked away in a back street, at least it was open.

Sir Ralph Abercromby KB ((7 October 1734 – 28 March 1801) was a Scottish soldier and politician. He rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in the British Army, was noted for his services during the Napoleonic Wars, and served as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland. Murdering Bastard.

This is a pub I have always admired just because of how close it is to the police station. It's got a large horseshoe shaped bar, it was quite busy when we came in here (although it was on a Friday at half 6). The ale is quite well kept but at almost ridiculous prices, I was going to be charged £7.60 for two pints of Phoenix Hopsack (a 3.8 percent beer), it was off so I was able to get two pints of the Trooper Red n Black porter by Robinsons (which, even though was 3 percent stronger than the Hopsack was actually selling at a cheaper price at 3.50 for a pint). It seems like this place is in trouble of being shut down, but I don't think the prices help it's push to bring in more punters.

A pleasant all rounder style of pub with large screens for sport, food, beer garden & smart use of interior space. I had a pint of Landlord (3.50) which was very good and the bar people were friendly & efficient. The customers were a mixture of late lunchers, early post workers & solo sippers. That would be me & another bloke watching the cricket.

Have been here twice in recent memory, the most recent visit being last night. It was pretty busy and standing room only. Had a pint of the Copper Dragon Golden Pippin which was pleasant. Seemed to be a fair mix of people in, from a table of studenty types playing a game on a mobile phone to a middle aged chap in nylon jogging pants and flip-flops. Staff seemed busy but no issue with service at the bar.

Decent, traditional pub at the side of the City Police Headquarters - aka Bootle Street nick. Clean, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere - serving Taylor Landlord, Black Sheep Best and Skipton Golden Pippin. I had the last mentioned which was in excellent condition. The Greek-Cypriot food smelt delicious - try it next time maybe. Well worth a visit.

Good little pub, well worth a visit. Timothy Taylors, Landlord, Black sheep Best bitter & Copper Dragon Best bitter on handpulls. All were great. Its been a long time since ive been in manchester and I do like what they have done to this place. I bit of money has been spent here. Its nice now and your feet no longer stick to the floor. The staff were very polite with very quick service. Its a nice place to take your wife / or your bit on the side......

Good all round pub.

****Reopened August 2011.****

Now in the hands of Greek George, formerly of the renowned Circus Tavern. Anyone familiar with George and/or The Circus will know that life will not be uninteresting. Quiet so far, but word is spreading and many familiar faces have homed in. New menu at the planning stage - probably with a Greek influence . . .

So far, no scrotes. (One or two members of the eccentric community, but one wouldn't expect anything else where George is involved)

By the way, it's "Abercromby," not "Abercrombie."

This pub is a disgrace. Ventured in for the first and last time a week ago. A dirty little hovel with a strange smell in the air. Only ale on was something from beartown brewery which was poorly kept and vastly overpriced. Less than enthusiastic service from the bar person. How do these pubs survive!

Stumbled across this pub recently after having to leave our chosen venue when it was invaded by a bunch of vile pondlife.

Nice pub, friendly staff and a couple of Copper Dragon ales on. Good outdoor area in the sun.

A good pub in the centre of the city, near to the Town Hall and right next door to Bootle Street Police Station!

Gosh what a contrast, can be inviting with its old charector, real ale and fantasic duke box......but can also be uninviting with its smelly bogs, indifferent staff and a tendency to have more beers off than on....

A nice pub, with a generally well behaved clientle. Good range of beverages.

Not been in here for a couple of years but enjoyed long lunches and drinking the Cains, it was always spot on. Friendly landlord who was good at getting the Test Match on early doors.

I used to frequent this pub regularly, and although I have moved to pastures new....I miss my time in the Ralph. Top landlord/lady! It is true that the Heineken here is the best anywhere.

I was in this pub in December last year with 3 mates watching Bolton v Leeds, and we were the only ones in, but the service was excellent, and the landlady was very courteous! I'll be back there again soon!
John H - 28 Aug 2003 21:41
If they actually turn upthe lights you willsee how dirty this pub is. Last week we went in the quiz and food is supposed to be available. It was not and the excuse the landlady was ill, but I heard the barstaff says she couls not be bothered du to a fight she had with the landlord so he handed out a bag of crisps each

This is a strong contender for my favourite pub! Friendly bar staff, a relaxed atmosphere and the best pint of Heineken I've ever had.
