Nice and quirky and we enjoyed a good meal in the carriage restaurant with good service. But the Reverend James (£3.10) and the Butcombe Bitter (£3.30) were average and too cold.

my family and myself visted the Old Station Inn yesterday (a sunday) It was our first visit on passing it on many occasions. We have twin boys of nine, and on arrival were pleased to see a huge play area for children to run around along with rabbits in a side garden. On entering the bar we ordered 2 fruit shoots for the boys, a lime and soda and pint of larger, but it cost 8.60, thats two pounds each for a fruit shoot !!! I am not tight but thought this very expensive, we got menus including kids menu.. Kids menu said all homemade, with a choice of pizza, sausages, cod chunks, chicken chunks with chops or mash, peas or beans....on the bottom of kids menu it said child at one price or young adult another , with our boys being nine i thought child size as i consider a young adult to be 12 upwards..?? my hubby ordered rack of ribs and i ordered sausage and mash, the prices are a bit more than we would normally pay we eat out a lot as a family and enjoy good foor but it was approx 31 for a child meals and 2 adult meals ! when the kids meals arrived it was three small chunks of cod on each plate bite size to say the least, a few chips and 3/4 plate of peas ! It took less than 5 mins for them to eat it ,my sausages were oily and it floated around the mash, and my husbands ribs were just that ribs not much meat on.. when i mentioned to the young girl collecting the plates she said "well they are child meals, you should have gone for young adult ???? ...and our ribs are always ok, I dont feel there was value for money here the service was ok but such a shame on other points... :(

A busy and popular pub just a stones throw from the main A37. It seems to be very much food orientated, the barmaid asking us while we were ordering our drinks if we had reserved a table (we hadnt even said we were eating) and most tables being laid up for food, many of them reserved. Space for drinkers seemed to be somewhat limited. That said, we visited on a Saturday evening, it may well be different at other times.

The pub is certainly quirky, and worth popping in if youre nearby. As befits its name there is much railway memorabilia around, such as old station signs and a model railway track suspended from the ceiling, although unfortunately the train was not running on our visit. There is also a plethora of other stuff around, with every square inch of the walls and ceilings covered. There are many photos on the walls, a large selection of hats hanging from the ceiling, an old post box, a set of post office scales, old radio sets, a cello and even the front half of an old Citroen sticking out of the wall.

The most interesting feature of the pub though is probably the genuine old railway carriage that forms an extension at the rear of the pub. Its still on a set of rails but has been attached to the rear of the pub for a rather unique dining experience. Although Ive eaten here on a few occasions, Ive never managed to get in here as its always booked up well in advance.

The food was pretty decent on the whole, but not somewhere Id rush back to. Most of the mains were around the 10 - 12 mark, so a step up from your usual pub grub. We mostly enjoyed what we had, but if I were to be picky I could find faults with most of the dishes the starter of goats cheese tart came with far too much lettuce; the starter of smoked salmon stuffed with prawns and crab seemed over-priced at 6.75, and the chicken pie was not really a pie at all but chicken in a very runny sauce with a pastry topping give me a PieMinister any day! As I said though, Im picking faults, Ive had far worse meals. The bar staff all seemed friendly, especially the Welsh lady that I assume was the landlady.

Beers on tap were Butcombe and Rev. James which I believe are the regulars, and on this occasion the guest was Wychwoods Paddys Tout. Ciders were Blackthorn and Thatchers Gold.

Very nice Brains pub only a few miles out of Bristol, superb & original interior inc an indoor overhead railway track and hats galore all over the ceiling - you name the hat and it's here! Also the front end of an old 2CV hanging on one wall ....oh and there's a GWR railway carriage in the garden that is a dining area and very nice garden area outside too. This is what pubs should be all about, originality. Brains Reverend James & Butcombe bitter on draught and both were in excellent form and excellent service with a smile including a warm welcome and goodbye from the lady behind the bar. Looked like a really nice & extensive menu too for the foodies. I'll be making sure I return here that's for sure. Well worth a visit, something here for all!

A charming pub with a hint of a bygone era. A lovely PINT of Reverend James was a treat, served by a proper barmaid!! SO enjoy, as i certainly did and will return.
