I visited this pub tonight (05/05/2012) and was met with a very warm and friendly landlord and landlady. The surroundings were very spacious and there was a great real fire . I also had a lovely meal and will definately be visiting again soon. There is a large beer garden and i know my children will enjoy going there in the summer. I wish the new landlord and landlady every sucess.

I visited this pub a week ago on my first trip to Derby. We arrived to find the place rather empty due to the snow but were greeted by the landlady and grateful for a warm spot in front of the fire. We ended up staying a good few hours chatting away to the landlady and enjoyed the friendly, laid back atmosphere. Drinks are reasonably priced, there is a pool table, darts, some games to play and plenty of space so you are not cramped. There was no food served whilst we were there due to a supply issue.

My personal opinion would be that if you are looking for an upmarket gastro pub then this is not for you. But for a friendly local that allows dogs, with a few decent beers on tap, where you can sit comfortably then I'd definitely say give it a try. And I much preferred it to the square and compass a few yards down the road!

We felt instantly welcomed by the new land lady who cound not do enough for us. The pub is very atmospheric and warm with facilities for all ages, in fact we're looking forward to taking our little one's on a sunny day! We wanted to stay longer for their bank holiday plans. The food was excellent and well priced and they also offered a good variety of drinks. All in all a great country pub which made our weekend away all the more special. Looking forward to going again soon.

I visited here recently and the food and service were both excellent.
The staff could not do enough to make you feel welcome, to the extent that they were prepared to cook my partner something that was not even on the menu which I know very few establishments would be willing to do.

I would like to add that you do not have to be an intelligent individual to comment on what constitutes good service and food.

Perhaps the staff were not willing to welcome the ignorance and arrogance clearly displayed towards others on here by some people!!

Definately worth a visit and I hope you enjoy it!

the negative reviews were unfortunately right, and they did nothing about it.
Now sadly bankrupt and rubbish. Hopefully Greene King will do something with the place soon. Shame.

I would just like to say that after visiting the pub on New Years day, which i must say was absolutly packed solid, i cannot agree with the comments from steve2905. There was a group of us with small children and we were made to feel very welcome, the staff that were on duty at the time couldnt help us enough, i have to say that considering that there were only 2 members of staff on ,both runing round like headless chickens to serve and look after a pub full of people, they both want a medal. The service was very acceptable and the food was lovely, yes we did have a little wait but it was explained that all the food was being freshly prepared and would take time. This we didnt mind at all, knowing that we where getting freshly prepared and cooked food.
Both members of staff where very polite, and had a smile to greet all that walked through the door, willing to help as much as they could. I just wanted to say a very well done to those who worked on New Years Day, and compliments to the landlord/landlady for finding excellent staff to support her in her running of the pub.If the service of that day was as good as that ,what kind of service would we get on a quieter day?? We will be returning at a later date.

Thought the Three Stags was Great, we go on a fairly regular basis and it is not at all as some reviewer has stated.
The food and beer has always been good and the staff friendly and polite.
The last time we went the entertainment on that evening was well worth stopping for.
Well worth a visit in my opinion.

I have a few words of advice for a first time reviewer like verdin whoever he or she is To be credible you need to think VERY carefully about what you are writing If you do not you make yourself look very foolish.

Please remember that the vast majority of BITE readers are intelligent people who can very easily differentiate between a genuine review from a long standing contributor and an obviously biased one-off by a virgin reviewer, particularly one that does not attempt to address any of the negative issues raised.

Claiming mistaken identity is one of the oldest tricks in the book. It might just possibly work if the pub was called the Red Lion or the Royal Oak, but definitely NOT for a pub called the Three Stags Heads.

The bottom line is that when we visited the Three Stags Heads (which for the avoidance of any doubt is located at Darley Bridge, DE4 2JY), the management and staff appeared to have lost the plot completely. Nobody seemed to be in charge and the numerous barmaids and kitchen staff (probably 5 or 6 of them) only seemed interested in blowing up balloons giggling and indulging in girlie talk about their boyfriends and what they were going to wear to some gig at the pub later in the day. Serving the customers was the least of their priorities. Hence my ACCURATE review about the appalling service and the abysmal quality of the meals.

As the Three Stags Head is now a Greene King house, I would normally have driven past, but a chalk board advertising a beer festival over the Late August Bank Holiday weekend tempted me to give it a try. In retrospect, I wish that I hadnt bothered

First impressions werent too bad, but I guess the alarm bells should have begun to ring because most of the festival beers had been brewed by the pubs puppet masters in Bury St. Edmunds; the exceptions being Bass, Batemans XXX and one each from the local micros Falstaff and Leatherbritches.

The staff, all female, and plenty of them were very friendly too. And the menu was attractive, so we decided to eat. It was a bad mistake because from here on things really went downhill

The girls seemed to be more interested in socialising amongst themselves than looking after their customers. Although the pub was almost empty, after several reminders it took 45 minutes before our food was served and then it was not as had been ordered and was almost inedible. Even the home made chips were rubbish.

After complaining we were given a derisory refund of 5.

I wish that I had driven past. In future I will DEFINITELY do so.

Good local in small village outside Matlock, serves Hardy and Hanson's beers extremely well and sometimes has bands on at weekends. Lovely beer garden for summer and hosts a particularly nice fell race every August (only 5 miles, an absolute joy to finish with a pint).
