user reviews of the Hop and Kilderkin, Winton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Hop & Kilderkin was the first of a few pubs we tried in Winton between Christmas and New Year. Our main reason for visiting were the two micropubs on this street - Micro Moose and the Silverback. Neither are listed on here. Both were good. The Hop & Kilderkin was open before the others though. So we ventured in. It's a typical food and family-oriented Greene King pub. Greene King IPA & Hardy and Hanson's Rocking Rudolph were the two real ales. Killed some time, if nothing else.

Good pub - as other comments suggest mainly students but also a good mix. Nice and airy. Beer good, didn't eat so can't comment on the grub.

Only downside is that we went in on the advertised quiz night. Fairly quiet and the "DJ/Quizmaster" was terrible. Oldish guy who talked far too much and full of himself - spoilt it so we got up & left.

Will definitely go back there again for the good beer & food but wouldn't recommend the quiz on a Monday.

Think this pubs rating is being dragged down by older reviews. Had a pint of the St Edmunds Ale last saturday and it was perfect. Decor fine, a little boisterous for my liking but that's cos of the sky footie that was on. A solid 6 and would return here again.

They've clearly had the interior designers in to rip out the tired old wooden flooring and furniture and I think they've done a great job. Its a very smart pub now, friendly barmaids but still very good value food and drink. Can't wait to go back again and deserves a much higher rating in my opinion.

Just had the 60 min make over, stinks of paint with no ventilation, over priced and asked not to stand at the bar. Have a word green king.

Not sure whether the previous people actually went into the right pub? This pub is always clean, staff and customers friendly. I will be trying the whetherspoons when it opens but wont abandon the Hop.

Never seen such a motley bunch as this place. I only nipped in for the loo- then chavs older than my dad were giving me looks- what a joke. TV screens everywhere and not a middle class person to behold...

I see the powers that be have backed down and The Hop and Kilderkin has welcomed back Ringwood Brewery. Whats next? Regular guest beers? Great start, well done.

You must go to the Quiz on a Monday night, the DJ is fantastic!

This pub is going from strength to strength! The old regulars are gradually coming back, the staff are happy and the manager actually works the bar! Things are so much better now.

What has happened to this place. New management have barred some of the daytime drinkers after they had the temerity to complain about the quality of the ale! which was excellent under the old regime. Even the cider and the guinness isn't being kept properly. There used to be a god cross section of the local community in here but now that many of the older drinkers have been barred or taken their custom elsewhere it has become student dominated. I've nothing against students personally but I prefer a place which has a good mix of people from different backgrounds and age groups etc.

Not as good as it was in the late 1990s but still pretty good and for this end of Bournemouth probably about the best there is although sadly very little competition.Bar staff friendly.

Hogshead pub with the usual excellent range of real ales and a good cross section of people drinking in there. Tends to be older people drnking during the day but it becomes more studenty as the evening wears on. Food is so-so and the bar staff are a bit on the dozy side. Big screen for the match although you usually have to remind the staff that the game is on. 3 fruit machines and a quiz machine.
