user reviews of the Duke William, Lincoln

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

At the top of Bailgate almost out of reach of the tourists, the Duke William was radically refurbished about 3 years ago and now describes itself (as does everywhere else) as a "pub and kitchen". Big enough to accommodate a range of customers, the inevitable party of lads on a day out hogged the bar but a quick barge-through and I was able to get close enough to order a £4 pint of Citradelic without being able to see who brewed it (possibly Melwood according to Google). Other ales were Doom Bar, Colchester's Metropolis and the house Duke William Ale brewed by Ferry Ales. Busy and lively in a good way, it was a pleasant hour for us.

Hmmm....! Interesting place this. Not sure I would actually want a meal there tho'. Staff behind bar also 'interesting', and looked like customers on a night-out having a quiet drink...!! (Sometimes not so quite)! I was viewed with suspicion by the male behind the bar when ordering drinks, as he obviously knew everybody else in there, but seemed unsure how to welcome others, and I felt slightly awkward. I watched some of the World Cup football on the only, and totally inadequate Tv screen, drunk up, and moved on elsewhere. Other pubs nearby were much better. I won't re-visit this small hotel/bar. 2/10

My family and I had a meal in the restaurant here and we were disgusted by the lack of basic food hygiene. The cutlery was not clean; it was still covered in food residue. When I complained to the woman serving the food she then thought it acceptable to try and polish the cutlery on her apron. After a further complaint she then took away all the cutlery to re-wash them which surprisingly only took her a few minutes so again I have my doubts. When serving the carvery my partner asked for no meat as she is vegetarian. However due to staff using the same serving tongues for everything there had been cross contamination of food. There was meat mixed in with the vegetables which ended up on my partners plate. After seeing the meat the member of staff then picked it out with her fingers!!
I spoke to the assistant manager (who was very nice) to complain about the woman serving the food, she said she would ask the owner to speak to me. Low and behold the woman that I wanted to complain about, who was breaking food hygiene laws was the owner and had no interest is hearing my complaint!!! I then later saw her scraping burnt food from the serving table before using the same tongues to serve the next poor customer. This place is absolutely disgusting and should be inspected by the authorities.

Another place which has let down my fiancee & I in terms of planning our post-wedding meal. Landlady very abrupt & evasive; don't these people want your money????!!!
That aside, no atmosphere, unfriendly staff; trying to be something it ain't, ie. good.

Just to update the previous reviews, the pub is now run by a friendly couple, it is very tidy and seems to have been refurbished recently. Leather seats, free computer access, a lovely outside drinking area. The pub also has a new flat screen TV. Two real ales were available, I plumped for the Deuchars IPA. It was a short visit but on the whole it seems very friendly and a world away from its last few years

The landladies been investigated by police 3 times in the last year for drunk and disorderly and assaulting customers.
Enough said.

Four of us stayed here for the night after the Lincoln v Wycombe Wanderers game and we were very impressed with the hotel - it was very clean, the breakfast was good and the staff were extremely polite and hard-working.The Fuller's London Pride was up to the same high standard as in my local Fuller's pub in High Wycombe.

Dingy little pub, bad decor and bad beer. The place is filthy considering its a hotel aswell. Very clicky crowd in there so not very welcoming. Food bad too.
