Decent beer (St Austell) , decent food and a friendly barmaid. Worth a look.

Shame the last review was so negative as it does not reflect the pub as it is today .. Beer is always top notch with a good selection.. Friendly and the food seems to be popular. Friendly clientele and nice surroundings .. big beer garden/yard in the summer with ample seating

Oh dear, I had been looking to my visit to the Lion. Previous visits always yielded good beer, nice bar-maid and pleasant company. Usually London Pride plus one or two others. An evening of Pride and Curry and Pub conviviality, lovely.
Disappointment then to be greeted by sullen pimply Bar Boy, disinterested and fed up. But worse was to come, 13 Lagers (thirteen, including the fridge bound stuff) and ONE ale... Doom Bar. Never was a beer better named. I am not a fan of this stuff and would avoid it but it was the only choice. I enquired of mine host what other beer there was "thats it" was his poetic and informational response. I guess in a high street that also contains the Summoner and Bunters you can afford to ignore your ale drinkers safe in the knowledge that they have nowhere else to go... I score it 6, but based on prior experience. Please, fire the sullen youth, bring back the nice girls and get a bloody beer in.

I love everything about this pub - the atmosphere, the prices, the food.
HOWEVER - there is one thing that really lets it down. The toilets.
I dont know if it is just me but I find it really off putting going somewhere that doesnt even have sanitary bins for their female customers to use. And the hand dryer is probably older than me!
In saying that the loos are generally quite clean (apart from on a Saturday night but you cant help that when there is only 2 WCs!)
I would have given this place a 10 as it is always a friendly atmosphere and the only place in Sittingbourne for the grown ups to go and dress up (ulike The Vineyard!) but the loos really are a mass let down.

Go into the Red Lion about once a month, went in last night (29/6/10) and the football was on. As usual the man behind the bar served us quickly and was friendly. Beer was nice, glasses clean etc. The bar and toilets are clean and tidy. I have never eaten in here but the menu looks good pub food. Well worth a visit if you are in Sittingbourne.

A good pub is only good if the punters are. Well i drank in this pub for nearly a year, with me and my companions. I never ounce felt alone, the people in Sittingbourne, are welcoming, with gret wit, can have a good laugh at them selves, and overall, will make you feel the centre of attention. Then theres the staff, lots of them, you never wait on a pint, and they the all have that lovley banter about them. The drink, well the place iz imaculate, theres no funny taste from dirty pipes or glasses, and itz cold real cold. The best thing about this pub is the owners. Richard, his wife and family, give more warmth, time and respect to all who enter the door, than i have ever felt in any pub i have been in, and i travle all over the place with work. Problems dont occur, only soloutions. Ask, and they will help in any way. I will be back with my friends for the best pint, company, and that lovely fire, even though its 370miles away. Visited this pub on 25th November 2006. Although I thought the Bull over the road was pretty nice, I think the Red Lion is Sittingbourne's best boozer. It's a fine 15th Century public house, with excellent facilities, a good choice of drink, and very good service. I could have sat in this pub for most of the day, but with match to take in, and several other pubs to sample, alas, I couldn't. Well done the Red Lion, although the competition in Sittingbourne is pretty poor, you knock the socks off most other pubs in the town. Also a nice beer garden to the side, but beware, there is a food area at the back, which on this day, was packed with kids!

Great pub, have had some fantastic times in here this summer. Serves Heineken my current fave lager, friendly barstaff, great garden. Only downside is that it can get really busy on a weekend - but surely thats a sign of a good pub!

I want this pub to be great. It is an ancient coaching inn on the ancient Great Dover Road. Henry V drank ale here on his way home from Agincourt. Henry VIII stopped here, as did Pepys. The pub serves several cask ales in good condition. The staff are friendly and helpful. There's bare brickwork and ancient oak beams and a curious great fireplace. It should be cosy and gloomy and charming and redolent with British history. But instead it feels like you're sitting in a corridor in a workingman's club. The bar is long and large and dominates the pub. It is a wood bar, but it feels wrong. It looks wrong. It is wrong. There are walls missing. The place has been poorly drerssed up. There's a lack of the little pieces here and there that make a great pub a wonderful place to be in. I mean, this is not a bad place. Far from it. It's just that with a skillful and sympathetic touch this could be a wonderful place famous throughout Kent. Instead, it's just another pub, albeit with a bit of history and some bare oak beams.

Got to agree with all of Jimbo smiths comments to me that is the atmoshere..food well cooked and presented.staff friendly.one of sittingbournes better pubs..

Part of a 15th Century coaching house, this pub has a modern-ish bar, with wooden floors. The lounge/eating area is more reminiscent of a working mens club with its lay out of tables. The beer was excellent on my visit and the courtyard drinking area, which shows the pubs architectural features was a pleasure to visit.
