please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Using the Wetherspoons app - I waited 20 minutes for a pint of Fosters to be brought to my table.
randolf7 - 3 Oct 2020 15:59
Yes, the elbow of the L is the only spot to stand - when ordering here, or you could wait 15 minutes.

Arguments (customer/customer and customer/barperson) are as common as the shout - from inside the bar - 'who's next?'...
tradervic - 19 Nov 2019 17:55
Getting served - in the correct order - is a big problem here.

The L shaped bar (where most of one side can't be seen from the other) doesn't help.

Can become very busy at weekends/evenings - when the serving order becomes virtually random.
croydonpeer - 18 Nov 2019 08:23
Beer good at a bargain £1.99 in here.Trying to get served is a problem unless the older guys are working.Since the minimal refit seems more fights and trouble too.Lot of the old regulars now drinking in the Crown further down the high Street.Had a breakfast which was good, although square eggs are new one to me.
talesofthebar - 27 Mar 2019 10:08
Open again - hard to see evidence of the refurbishment.
randolf7 - 10 Mar 2019 23:06
Closed - for refurbishment.
tradervic - 18 Jan 2019 15:19
Staff make little effort to serve customers in order.

And shorts very often have the mixer filled to the brim, without any consultation.

Could do much better, with a higher calibre management - and staff training

tradervic - 30 Dec 2018 11:28
Beer choice needs to improve if it wants to attract the real ale beer snobs from the Grapes when it closes.Walked in and out last week because of the poor selection on offer, went down to the Grapes, the girl in charge of beer down their knows what the customers like!
talesofthebar - 17 Jul 2018 12:47
Yes - it's an L shaped bar, which limits visibility. But the staff seem to make little effort to serve customers in order. Regulars though - are well looked after!
wealdman - 20 Jan 2018 09:15
Cant knock this place,49er beer ,ok service on my afternoon visits.Hope that doesn''t change when the Grapes down the road shuts, dont want their riff-raf.
talesofthebar - 13 Sep 2017 13:24
Been going to this pub for seven years now. Always find the staff friendly and they have a good selection of drinks. Very busy on a Friday and Saturday nights and can be hard to get served. Still my favourite pub in the area.
Aliestercrowley - 22 Nov 2016 14:56
beer choice not been best of late, only saved this week by the oakham beermonster 4.8%,although the qualitys been ok!beer festival starting Friday.2 or 3 excellent hard working staff ,would be great if some of the others would help at the bar when 5 or 6 customers are waiting to get served!as for the lady from wallington, I don't think its right to shout at staff in front of customers to do some work, very unprofessional, take them to one side, away from customers ears and sight!
anonymous - 9 Mar 2016 13:30
bit of a off night, seemed understaffed with a lack of choice of decent real ale!fortunately a excellent truemans blindside beer was on.tried 2 new craft beers ,truemans roller ipa, which was hoppy and quaffable.westerhams bohemian rhapsopy, got the bar singing but not so good!beer festival starts in march, but the sunday roast will be removed from the menu after mothers day.sad to here that Laurelle has left, she has been brilliant to me and others and will be missed, good luck!
anonymous - 29 Feb 2016 15:28
had last 5 nights in here, service mostly been good, the blond associate being the pick last 2 nights, she knows how to pull a pint!crafting beers most nights, but tonight very good flack manor, flack catcher 4.4%,new brewery and beer for me!lucky to have so many good staff, especially our favourite comedy act,you know who you are!
anonymous - 15 Jan 2016 01:44
its CHRISTMAS!well jan 6th and 4 guest xmas beers on last night!still as the grapes late night drinkers have had to relocate due to the January 11pm shutting, least we have some excellent craft beers to quaff!tandoori rap was yummy,as was the adnams dry hopped.staff great, doesnt seem so hurried at the end of the night making it more relaxed, unlike the grapes staff with their coats on at 5 past midnight waiting for drinkers to leave!
anonymous - 7 Jan 2016 11:39
been in for the odd pint now and again, not been the greatest selection on lately, but last night truemans zephyr was excellent, and quaffed by many!now have a vast amount of craft beers on keg and bottle, which ive enjoyed!service and staff been brilliant, and now basil been made up to master of ceremonies, was even more entertaining and had us all in stitches!even my amish friend enjoyed his humour!looking forward to a coffee marathon in here in the new year!
anonymous - 14 Dec 2015 14:07
I was expecting this to be the best of the 2 Wetherspoons in Sutton. But I much preferred the Grapes further along the High Street. The Moon on the Hill is the larger of the two and was also the busiest on our Saturday evening visit. I'm never too keen with pubs having bouncers on the door. But this one had a couple. Waiting over 10 minutes for a drink is fairly unacceptable, especially when staff are serving everybody out of turn. There were plenty of ales. But there were no dark ones and real cider is not served either. The ale choice was Ruddles Best, Sharps Doom Bar, Kings Red River, Oakham Scarlet Macaw & Asylum, Kelham Island Pale Rider, Ringwood Forty Niner, Thornbridge Jaipur & Twickenham Naked Ladies. A lot of people were in for food. Others were clearly in for a session, with wine and shots helping people run up bills of almost £100. Disappointing Wetherspoons.
blue_scrumpy - 15 Nov 2015 18:03
After a Sunday afternoon walk from Caterham to Banstead, my wife and I took a bus to Sutton, where we sought out this Wetherspoon's which is in the centre of town, about a five-minute walk from the railway station. We found it satisfactory, although the bench-style seats in all the booths were oddly uncomfortable. (The depth of the seats meant that the seat-backs were too far away to provide proper back-support -- I could feel a pain in my upper back developing after sitting for just 15 minutes, so we moved to a table with ordinary chairs.) Food and drink (Q.E.D., Cennen Welsh bitter, and Et Citra -- all guest ales in the beer festival) were fine.
beermann - 3 Nov 2015 13:35
bit of an off night sunday with the beers, hook Norton easy weasel and the shepherd neame redsails were a bit lifeless but must of been near end of barrel as Monday night 4 new beers were on moorehouse pendal witch brew, marstons green hop pale ale, cotleigh redfire and strathaven festival ale all very good.although as I said before same old brewerys for the festival, ive enjoyed this one a lot more than the 3 or 4 previous festivals."1.99 a bargain.after barring myself from grapes, now barring myself from from posting on Sutton pubs!
anonymous - 27 Oct 2015 10:36
beer been good on my visits, every pub should also have adnams dry-hopped lager on!tandoori chicken bites or in a wrap are delicious!service been great.now been outed as hoppyal to basil by another member of staff?only a bit of fun olly, your brilliant!this is a great place to get 22 free coffee refills as one of their favourite customers regulary does!will be attempting to beat her coffee record soon!lol
anonymous - 22 Oct 2015 14:16
Decent beer and food at cheap prices.Better the daytimes in here, customers better behaved.Unlike the fight night evenings.
talesofthebar - 5 Oct 2015 20:53
been in a few times the last week, not been the greatest selection of ales,so been having more of the craft beers.best beer of the week was bingham extra pale ale, which me and mr weetos quaffed a few down last night!the October beer festival is starting soon, but unfortunately its the same brewerys as most of their festivals.big thankyou to staff, service been great and thanks to basil for the entertainment, they should double his wages!
anonymous - 5 Oct 2015 11:03
oakham inferno was excellent last night,as was mr weetos butcombe beer.quite enjoy my sunday evenings in here with the gang, although I do miss basil behind the bar the last 2 weeks.
anonymous - 28 Sep 2015 11:07
excellent evening, some interesting beers and some craft beers to die for,up to about 5 different ones now, super.love the banter with wetherspoons very own version of basil fawlty, lol.
anonymous - 7 Sep 2015 01:20
oakham inferno and trumans lazarus, cant get much better, well done beer guys.
anonymous - 17 Aug 2015 01:20
after my last post ,2 nights later and one of the top jackpot beers is on oakhams bishop farewell, havent had it for a few years but still up there in my top ten excellent!also somehow lost my jager bomb vaginity tonight!
anonymous - 12 Aug 2015 03:00
Splendid food,that's right.
Fabulous drink,that's neat.
I really love your tiger feet.
Plenty of it on show,he,he.
rainbowian - 11 Aug 2015 15:55
hasn't been as many jackpot beers recently on my visits, enjoyed the dark star American pale and hylder blonde, but didn't taste as I remember.also wolf brewery granny wouldn't like it,a good pint, but not my style and not as good as other wolf beers ive had in Norfolk.had some good banter with the staff, and just to put the record straight,i don't hate ex moon staff member, just think you need customer skills in the chosen line of work, some think the current moon staff seem to have, well done!ive worked with customers since I was 9 years old and it does help to be polite and have good manners!
anonymous - 10 Aug 2015 01:58
hasnt been the best selection of ales the last 2 nights, tried the Twickenham mosaic pale at 3.2,which was ok.drank more of the keg craft beers, blue moon wheat beer was new for me,but glad I didn't get a slice of orange with it!cider festival seems to be going well.and they have some excellent staff working.comedy moment last night when our very own Freddy Krueger lookalike came back from the gents to tell us that some guy asked him if he wanted to put his lips around it!
anonymous - 21 Jul 2015 20:05
always good to catch up with the usual suspects in here!tried the twicks naked ladies,a beer that is no way near as good as when previous brewer was brewing!hot night so had the adnams dry hopped lager, hogs back lager and some other American ipa called 7? guns at 5.5%,all ice cold and hit the spot making for a hazy bus journey home!oh and nice service guys.
anonymous - 29 Jun 2015 11:06
not a great selection of beers last night, too strong or just gone.had the binghams vanilla stout which was good and a pint of one of those spoons brewed beers by wadsworth didn't like.coming soon was more interesting, the lazarus and an American ipa.on the plus side tried a couple of pints of the adnams dry hopped lager on keg which was wonderful.staff and service excellent.
anonymous - 22 Jun 2015 11:53
excellent night in here with the ex grape"s seasoned drinkers last night.the trumans, lazarus was outstanding, new beer for me and went into my top 5 beers!staff were great.its true what the others say, that the beer quality is much better than the other local spoons(no deli belly for mr weetos)!nice to have a few customers in late, unlike the grapes who"s late night trade seems to have virtually disappeared!bit like last nights quiz, down to the one only!lol
anonymous - 1 Jun 2015 15:28
sounds like a few of the seasoned drinkers were not pleased with one of the door staff rude and aggressive manner in trying to get them to drink up at 12.05 am,5mins after last orders,on sunday night/Monday.i always think the 20 mins is ok,but if you read the wetherspoons policy and code of conduct 3.1.2,its apparent that up to 30 mins dispersal time is incorporated in the licensing, something the door staff should be made aware of and maybe bar staff and management should learn.out of the 3 spoons I use only the nonsuch in cheam give you 30 mins, which always make for a much more relaxed end to the evening, because we the customers go to pubs to unwind and relax, not to get bellowed at.does tend to spoil the evening.
anonymous - 27 May 2015 12:23
not a brewery I like but the hogs back, hog in the limelight was excellent tonight, service was good too.nice to see that there was at least 10 grapes customer in,because the shift manager to be was working in the grapes tonight.please moon management please take him back,he is ruining the grapes!ive now found that he barred 3 of the guys that do the sunday quiz, people ive seen round Sutton over the years who are intelligent, cause no trouble and spend money.he really needs to read the wetherspoons job description of what a shift manager role is,especially the role with customers!
anonymous - 7 May 2015 02:41
1st time in for 2 months, heard some good things about the beer from others.unfortunatley, twicks naked ladies not the best and the wetherspoons love affair with American style beers, drove me to the magners,at £1.99 a bargain!
anonymous - 20 Apr 2015 01:41
came in for last 45 mins, really good kelham island and bingham beers on tonight.was worth the sprint up from the grapes.seem half decent staff as well.can we have the bubbly blond girl down the grapes, who worked Thursday down there please! she was fun and us customers warmed to her!
anonymous - 14 Feb 2015 02:28
ive always prefered the grapes to the moon on hill.but after 4 nights of the same beer down grapes and not great,i gave up and tried the moon.full marks great selection of beers, enjoyed the moorhouses witches brew, and the Twickenham naked ladies was the best ive ever had.service was great, and no knob customers in, that normally put me off the moon.got to wonder whats happened down the road when there were at least 10 grapes customers in moon.beer selection and quality brilliant.
hoppyal - 15 May 2014 01:37
The staff are really good, as other people have mentioned. There is a lot of light in this pub. Very good beer at all times. Look for the two strange metal trees guarding the lower floor. The pub is right next door to quite a stunning church; Trinity Church. If you arrive by Sutton Station the pub is straight downhill, about 200 metres.
offramp - 14 May 2014 10:27
Excellent beer and service. The moons beer during beer festival been spot on.

talesofthebar - 18 Apr 2014 12:54
in for last hour Friday, the bank"s czech mate was in very good nick, one of best pints ive had in a long time.craig the manager here is doing an excellent job and staff so much more efficient now days.well done.its good that they have door staff on,but I don't need to be told at 14 mins after last bell that toilet is closed by one, mind he didn't argue when I brushed past him.
hoppyal - 5 Apr 2014 17:35
Always an interesting choice of beers, tend to be well kept. Three main seating areas & a horrendous vertical drinking area through the main doors - the wind whistles through here.
Wilson_MacDonald - 9 Mar 2014 20:28
very good pints of bingham"s vanilla stout this week.the manager must be working his magic in here as the staff seem to be happy and customer serving and manners have improved a lot.make it a lot better place to drink.
hoppyal - 11 Dec 2013 15:11
tried the Jennings worlds biggest liar which was good, the name did make me think of a few people.good selection of fest beers.
anonymous - 17 Oct 2013 02:00
popped in last night, pint of Twickenham naked ladies was fair.change of the brewer taking effect.small jam jars of each guest beer by its pump showing what the beer looks like is a new one for me!
hoppyal - 7 Oct 2013 15:53
This is such a beauty and the beast.
A beauty this time.
Lovely
rainbowian - 6 Oct 2013 14:30
Has improved allround.Beer was excellent lunchtime yesterday.
talesofthebar - 29 Aug 2013 11:49
We know you're getting on a bit now, slerp. But why do you have to insult so many fellow posters. All morons?
croydonpeer - 1 Aug 2013 10:55
It demonstrates that we all make typos, my original point for posting was people will go to the Moon looking for "greenslade" when it is actually a Surrey Hills beer called Greensand IPA,for you not to understand this you must be a complete moron and that view is proven by your( ahem !) scrawls on this site.
slerpy - 1 Aug 2013 10:13
The man in the moon came down too soon
and asked his way to Bombay
He went by the west
and burnt his vest
by drinking Greensand IPA

It was fraddledaddledoodly
SillySam - 1 Aug 2013 08:50
Slerpy - what, on earth, does a typo about another pub have to do with the Moon? Get a grip man!
tempest - 1 Aug 2013 07:24
BLACKGANDER, You posted on the 16April on the Red Cross Inn .....stategically......surely a spelling bee of your renown would use an "R" and it would then be.......stRategically.......wakey wakey!
slerpy - 31 Jul 2013 17:07
He is at his VERY best when he is ejecting an awkward customer, worth seeing, I hope he gets a full time managers job soon. He has been taught very well by Steve and will do a great job.He is temporarily back at the George( or was on Saturday when we had a chat). As for the too many ales, I agree, it is a policy of The George to have every handpump on,in the George the turnover makes it practical but going to a new pub trade needs building up. One of the jokes in the George is "have you seen an available soon sign" as it is very rarely seen.
slerpy - 31 Jul 2013 17:01
slerpy,i agree that the guy that came from the George introduced a very good selection of beers.he has now left and is at the wibbas in Wimbledon.moon now run by the manager from nonsuch inn north cheam.still good selection, but for the amount of beers they have on(too many I think),some get a bit tired.still a better pub than it was a while back.sorry for the misspelling of the greensand ipa.
hoppyal - 30 Jul 2013 15:40
Greensand IPA and Greensand Way, to be accurate.
blackgander - 30 Jul 2013 14:10
....Greensands,names after the famous ( perhaps not so) Greensands Way a footpath that extends from Haselmere, Surrey to Kent and is 108 miles long and noted for the attractive scenery en route. Personally I prefer the Greensands IPA to the other beers brewed by Ross who is very entertaining when he gives a Brewery tour. The Moon has done well since A manager from the George in Croydon took the reins.
slerpy - 30 Jul 2013 11:41
bit of a wait at the bar tonight as youngsters pushed in and got served before me,when I was next in line, but the wait was worth it for a perfect pint of surrey hills greenslade ipa.
anonymous - 10 Jul 2013 01:47
Still a good range of beers, maybe a change of staff but improvement still happening.Lady from grapes working in here,as well as some of the north cheam staff. The beers that I had over the weekend were all very good.In good hands at last.
talesofthebar - 9 Jul 2013 16:40
enjoyed a pint of jhb and moorhouses white witch tonight.good selection of other beers on.very good service.can I just say if anyone that wants to bully or post stupid comments on here click on blackdraggon66 profile first as you may see what can happen.

Thourburn147 - 18 Jun 2013 11:23
The moon had plenty of atmosphere last night...but the stomach is a bit dicky this morning... Nevermind...at least I didn't go chicagos or revs...lot to find a new venue..nudge-nudge..... Wink-wink..x
Thourburn147 - 15 Jun 2013 09:16
A very good selection of real ale on in this pub but the bar staff on the evening I visited didn't have a clue about the condition you serve a pint up to a customer in, I ordered two pints of Jaipur and was then served up to glasses of what looked like vegetable soup, the barman then walked off to serve someone else, I got the attention of a barmaid showed her the pints and then had to explain they were off, she didn't seem to believe me and called the 'Team Leader' over who eventually agreed with me that they were off, he then proceeded to show the barmaid how to hang the 'line being cleaned' sign over the pump and then they both went off to get line cleaning kit, when they came back I had to interrupt the 'training session' to ask for replacement drinks. We ended up with a pint of Dark Star American Pale Ale which was actually very good. To be fair to this pub although it has a big selection of ales on it's not really a real ale drinkers place, It's more of a 'Saturday night out' on the way to the night club type of place. The afternoon would be the best time to visit this place if all you are after is a few ales and peace to drink them or go to the Grapes.
Scotsaledrinker - 9 Jun 2013 11:20
Clearly, burn147 is the village idiot who has 'forgoton' how to spell. But blokes as thick as him probably never could and just prefer to make fools of themselves on here and in local pubs. Being workshy and unhygienic doesn't help either!
wealdman - 9 Jun 2013 10:06
Improving all the time.Good beer selection.Going in the right direction at long last.
talesofthebar - 8 Jun 2013 16:56
Yes mason. Also thick (very) and lazy.

The village idiot of Sutton.

rainbowian - 7 Jun 2013 10:04
At least, we will be spared looooooooool's childish/infantile rantings for a few weeks - and, hopefully, he will bring his boyfriend burn 147 with him.
mandraker - 7 Jun 2013 09:54
Tuna i think you like replying to my post just like all the others. Hoppy i am one person, whatever your problem is with all, you need to go and sort it out, your not on my wave length, maybe you got mental health problems and need to stop telling lies. You are sly person with no friends. I have had my fun with you all ,time to hop on a plane and go and enjoy myself i will be back in 3 weeks.have fun you boring lot.looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
blackdragon66 - 7 Jun 2013 09:02
blackdraggon, very bitter and twisted.says he didn't know me 1 minute, then some one pointed me out,now you know what I am,who I bore, how childish I am.do you read your posts? if you were pinocchio your nose would be as long as Sutton high street.only 2 bar staff in the moon know who I am.the grapes staff know me,i only ever moan if the beer is not my taste.some may not like me maybe,i don't know, but they are always polite to me as i am to them.plenty of the customers say hello or talk to me.think you are a big stirrer trying to cause trouble that's not there.have you some mental health problems or are you so twisted over something ive done to you.all rather perfetic.would be so nice if this site could just go back to talking about whats good and whats not in our pubs.apologies to the moon that all this crap gets posted on their page.

Dragon. You are a terrible bore and I hate that I have to reply to you. Unfortunately BITE admin doesn't exist or you would have been deleted an age ago. Your childish comments are worse than the bridalware/ Rolex rubbish that has been appearing. Nobody wants to hear you. Nobody cares what you say. Your a bully and a coward. Now stop clogging up this site and run along.
Tuna - 7 Jun 2013 00:12
Brewmason i am not a layabout lol, and what has it got to do with you what i say, go with hoppy and bore people, hoppy is very childish person and moans all the time to people who are not interested. customers and staff in both Wetherspoons are getting a bit fed up with him. I heard staff in the grapes moaning about him the other day.
blackdragon66 - 6 Jun 2013 23:52
dragon...why does a layabout insult a working/married man?
brewmason - 6 Jun 2013 22:14
Last comment, someone please let me in on the joke, and hoppy having a girlfriend is the joke, he might have a blow up doll.

Tuna - 30 May 2013 18:12
Yes 'loooooooooooooooo' is just a lazy local idiot who flits from one Sutton pub to another and looks down on road sweepers - those of us (unlike him) who work.
croydonpeer - 30 May 2013 13:58
First class snides is apt - hopp. And neither can spell.
brewmason - 30 May 2013 11:22

blackdragon66 - 29 May 2013 23:06

This really is the cowards hotline me dears!!!
Thourburn147 - 29 May 2013 12:20
For blackdragon (who often just types 'looooooooool' - whatever childish significance that has!) to give advice on posting is as silly as someone telling him to wash. Known in Sutton as 'scratchy'.........
tradervic - 29 May 2013 10:11
I am still here,Wealdman it is so nice you have joined in. Comments about the pub only please.New manager in here yesterday lets hope he brings the pub back to the way it was, with good service, polite staff and good beers.

blackdragon66 - 29 May 2013 09:02
Inarticulate/uneducated posters without syntax or spelling abilities seem alive here.

brewmason - 26 May 2013 14:27
Brewmason, can I suggest that we all report itchy and scratchy to BITE and get their accounts revoked. They are spoiling this site.
talesofthebar - 26 May 2013 13:38
If any of you muppets know me and have a problem with me please come and talk to me. You will find me in the Treasury tomorrow about 2. Lets see who has the balls loooooooooooooooooool.
blackdragon66 - 26 May 2013 12:38
Yes - these two clowns are well known in Sutton. Their stupid posts and inability to spell show their low standards. BITE and Sutton would be better off if they went into the Home for the Bewildered, as soon as possible.

Dopey Hoppy, and the boring road sweeper what a pair.
blackdragon66 - 14 May 2013 17:35
in tonight on a rare friday night out for me.triple fff alton pride was very good.nice to have a chat with Sel.good to see some one so passionate about beer and the pub.people should try this place as they wont be disappointed.oh and was in the last hour and service was good.
anonymous - 11 May 2013 03:22
i shouldnt react to other posters on a wind up.had chat tonight and not going to reply to any more postings from said people.all i will say is im as honest as they come .tonight had pint of woods blond beer that was great and service was very good.
anonymous - 7 May 2013 01:27
Drunk again, i know who you are
blackdragon66 - 6 May 2013 10:49
in tonight, very good service.good management, shame a certain posters try to rubbish the good work that been going on.yes its a wetherspoons in sutton that cant choose its customers. but on beer choice and quality is all i judge.alternative motives black dragon.maybe a relative that use to work here one thinks.get over it and the insults who cares.grapes staff know who hoppyal is but no one knows who black dragon is,got something to hide?along with cockney paul and probably other aliases.
anonymous - 6 May 2013 02:15
Hoppy if you have been told to keep posting you should, you must do what you are told.As for stalkers i dont think you would have many, someone pointed you out to me the other night in the grapes, yes it is true what you said about yourself.
blackdragon66 - 4 May 2013 10:46
beer was brilliant tonight both shere drop and dark star american ipa.other beers on dark star revelation, twickenham naked ladies, kelham island pale rider, jaipur ipa.good service .doing a great job on the ales.enjoying 1 or 2 on the quiter nights.was asked to carry on posting.sure my stalkers happy.
anonymous - 29 Apr 2013 02:20
been in twice this week, sunday for a naked ladies which was cloudy and tasteless and was changed with no fuss from the bar manager.and last night there were more beers on had a top pint of surreyhills shere drop, was £2.89,but worth every penny for its quality and taste.then tried the cronx porter that was very good.the service was good on both visits.still prefer the grapes as a pub,but alright for 1 or 2.off to pubs galore.
anonymous - 24 Apr 2013 17:12
Popped in last night with mate, good beer on.
talesofthebar - 23 Apr 2013 07:35
walked in tonight and they had good range of the festival beers.went for the skinners sennen and it was great, love this brewery.served within 30 seconds.sorry for being boring.
anonymous - 15 Apr 2013 02:00
Hoppy is being boring again.
blackdragon66 - 14 Apr 2013 21:12
as i said on my 3 visits beer good and service was good.my mate at football who is a beer god said the beer was good too,but he also didnt like the clientele when he visited.as for falling out with people,i only fall out with deceiving people who were meant to be friends but cant be truthful to you.you may know who that is mr dragon .its obvious who you are ,stop diggin me and alan out, stick to being boring like me and just talk about beer and pubs please.my last reply to you.
anonymous - 14 Apr 2013 17:35
Hoppy you need to talk to your mate the road sweeper a bit more or have you fallen out,all he does is slag the staff, management and the beer off and always has done ,so you need to start telling the truth.I even heard him in the grapes in the last 2 weeks moaning about the moon.
blackdragon66 - 13 Apr 2013 20:41
s31cuk,been in about 3 times and the beer has been very good.and the feedback ive had from a few others is good as well.as i only used moon on quiter nights the service has been improved.havent done the meet the brewers as i work later in the week.anyway big pat on the back for you.
anonymous - 13 Apr 2013 12:43
S31CUK, i was in here the other night with my girlfriend, i was a bit late coming in the beer was ok but i have tasted better. There was a couple of ladies lol customers having words with the staff, the language from both was terrible. I thought you were going to improve this pub not seen much change in the staff or customers if anything the pub has got worse. It will be along time before you will see me again. Terrible
blackdragon66 - 12 Apr 2013 19:15
Enjoying whats going on in moon. Will try and get in thursday to meet the brewer.First time there has been a beer festival and the prices not reduced.
talesofthebar - 3 Apr 2013 11:00

S31CUK - 19 Mar 2013 20:08
A visible improvement in the moon on my visit yesterday, selection ok,service ok,beer ok but little bit on the cold side, but cant have it all so soon. Will see if i can get the wife to give it another go.Keep this good work up fellas.
talesofthebar - 19 Mar 2013 11:13
again had a good pint of naked ladies and hophead was good too.as for the service, think its getting a lot better,on my first pint the lad even stopped doing the glass stacking to serve me ,so promising.blackdraggon early afternoon post today ,the entire butt was on last night but too strong for me.
anonymous - 18 Mar 2013 14:23
I will be in over the weekend, just to come and meet you.The early morning comment again from hoppyal, he is right about somethings the service has to improve.looking forward trying Entire butt.
blackdragon66 - 14 Mar 2013 21:52
love the sound of what going to happen in the moon.. with the beers.looks like you know what the customer wants and likes.the grapes is my pub,but will defenatley give the moon a go on a quieter night..some great beers, will introduce myself to you when i get a chance. .can i also say,ive told several other drinkers about you and the moon and they said it sound good, but one says the service has to get better for him to return.good luck, and any chance of getting my favorite brewery, surrey hill beers in.
anonymous - 14 Mar 2013 01:47
Hi everyone
Yes I'm new in The Moon and please come down to the pub and I can introduce myself properly.
talesofthebar Yes I was at the George in Croydon for the past 5 years and trust me we will improve and we will be working very hard...
Hoppyal thank you very much for your view we will be keeping naked ladies as a regular for now but disappointed about JHB as it is flying at the moment. I will be rotating JHB and DarkStar hophead for now but it is on right now if you want...

S31CUK - 12 Mar 2013 22:45
Why do you take any notice of what people say,why do you put yourself down.Good beers coming up in the beer fest in April, maybe we should get to know each other have a drink we both like ales. Let me know? No road sweeper though.
blackdragon66 - 12 Mar 2013 16:09
was talking about the stress that other posters have give me lol.anyway you cant miss me im the biggest fattest drinker in sutton.your entitled to your views of Al,but i will defend him as he is a top bloke.very similar posting to what cockney paul use to write about Al.end off can we all go back to talking about pubs again.some good beers coming up in the moon and 20p increase in the beers on the 18th.
anonymous - 12 Mar 2013 13:13
You and the road sweeper have no idea who i am. I know the road sweeper, but i dont know you,but i will find out.No stress for me i work for the council, bye bye
blackdragon66 - 12 Mar 2013 12:36
blackdragon66,they had your cider on down the grapes tonight.to be fair went in the grapes last night and alan was out of it ,so i suggested he went home which he did.i love the bloke great company.had intersting conversation tonight which told me who you are.dont want to get in a slanging match, good luck with your future.stress is there one day and gone the next.
anonymous - 12 Mar 2013 01:40
How was your mate Alan the road sweeper,or was he the grapes while you were in the moon.Dont tell me you have enough of him aswell.
blackdragon66 - 11 Mar 2013 16:39
first class service and brilliant pints of twickenham naked ladies, shame one of my favorite beers jhb had just finished.
anonymous - 11 Mar 2013 01:59
S31CUK,having seen that your previous posts have been about the beers in George Croydon, hoping that you worked there and are new in the moon.Dont want my other 2 post to sound like a witch hunt on the current staff they just need to be trained in customer service and how to pull a pint.Beer list looks exciting .We as customers of 20 years care,so should the workers.Onwards and upwards.
talesofthebar - 10 Mar 2013 13:18
Beers on today;
Twickenham naked ladies 4.4%, triple fff comfortably numb 5.0%, Adnams broadside 4.7%, Exmoor beast 6.6%, try this 3.7%, Alton's pride 3.8%, Adnams IPA 4.8%...

Coming soon,
Abbot reserve 6.5%, Oakhams JHB 3.8% (NEW), Exmoor gold 4.5%, Dark star hophead 3.8(NEW), Sneck lifter 5.1%,
JAIPUR 5.9% (NEW)
S31CUK - 8 Mar 2013 20:13
The management dont care, the comment below is right all the best staff have gone. The ales are terrible. You cant get served, the staff dont know how to talks to the customers. I have moved to the grapes now better beer service and staff.Someone needs to look at this pub and get to the bottom of what is going on.The manager should be moved on
blackdragon66 - 8 Mar 2013 18:12
Does anyone care in here anymore?Customers deserting, the better staff leaving. In general very depressing and number 1 needs to sort it fast ,and that includes the beer or im off to the very well run spoons down the road.
talesofthebar - 6 Mar 2013 10:41
The last comment is spot on.The manager wont even serve a customer she would rather ignore you.I heard three staff talking the other day, saying them two never come out of that office, the pub has gone down hill in the last couple of month and the beer.
blackdragon66 - 27 Feb 2013 16:27
Blackdragon, you are spot on.Using thispub since 1st opened, it is now at one of its lowest points. When the current manager took over there was a real improvement in this place. But once she fell in love with another member of staff, she doesnt seem to care about the customers or the the staff by all accounts.cath, charlie, alex and some of the others are good, but the rest seem hopeless.Turn over of staff gives the game away,if you are not liked you are out.I observe and hear lots of bitching, which isnt great.
talesofthebar - 27 Feb 2013 14:25
I am not really sure what has happened in this pub but went in here again today, for a pint or two before i got my bus, i had 1 pint the staff are terrible, the beer is not alot better, and all i hear is the customers moaning about the management. In the end went over to all bar one, service is good clean tidy pub. SOMEONE needs to go and sort this pub out. If anyone knows what has happen please let me know.TERRIBLE one of the worse pub i have been in for service.
blackdragon66 - 26 Feb 2013 22:13
More and more customers complaining TU!T TUT! well that proves that not EVERYTHING was yr fault Max, u saw sense and walked out, and it wasn't a case of a rat deserting the sinking ship, it was a case of the so called 'Management' not knowing a great guy and trying to destroy him. As for the rest of the remaining staff, there isn't a decent one amongst them. Seriously Tim, being the astute business man that you are...sort it out!
SIANMAC62 - 26 Feb 2013 16:48
Went in here yesterday with my wife and 3 kids, i waited at the bar for 10 mins, the staff would rather chat to each other than serve customers. We had food came out cold, we went to complain but gave up in the end as we waited at the bar again. Whoever the manager is he/she needs to train the staff. I had a guest ale was ok but have had better. Will try the one down the bottom of Sutton this week.
blackdragon66 - 25 Feb 2013 21:22
So the Bitches got their way in the end. Their loss as another decent guy quits
SIANMAC62 - 23 Feb 2013 13:05
Possibly the most gruesome vertical drinking in any Wetherspoons. When the front doors are opened, it's like a wind tunnel.
Wilson_MacDonald - 17 Feb 2013 12:43
Me and my wife were in sunday, and it has to be said what is happening here.It was so empty, sure when the door opened some tumbleweed got blowen in.
talesofthebar - 13 Feb 2013 12:32
I here ' The Lesbians Bullies' are at it again but this time they hopefully have dont succeed in loosing another guy his job !!!!!!
The lowest form of 'SCUM' IS 'BULLIES and of course A 'GRASS' thats CHARLIE {GIRL) from the bar i was surprised that she turned out to be 'A GRASS' !!!!!!
What goes round comes round they got rid of all of us Max but we just took it and moved on hope you fight them as for 'CHARLIE THE GRASS' shamefull behaviour when Alan told me i was shocked to say the least.

dannickmartin - 12 Feb 2013 16:27
great pint of twickenham summer down under last night.10 min wait when the bar was fairly empty,as friends of bar staff get served before longer waiting customers again.
anonymous - 7 Jan 2013 12:38
good selection of 4 christmas ales on last night, other guest beer was nelsons blood at 6%.
anonymous - 28 Nov 2012 14:17
Wasnt best pleased sunday afternoon, after being dragged round the shops by the wife we tried to get a roast dinner in here and was told at 4pm that they had run out of veg. When i suggested morrisons was still open, i received a blank look.Anyway wife said there was a sick smell around the bar.I have cold so didnt notice.Went to the sutton arms to eat.
talesofthebar - 5 Nov 2012 14:58
Very enjoyable halloween night ,very much enjoyed the festival ales with great company.Must say some at the bar blended in with the costumes theme
talesofthebar - 1 Nov 2012 17:27
Someone must read on here,as selection and full choice has been much better on last 2 visits well done.
talesofthebar - 20 Sep 2012 12:35
Can anyone tell me that during my last 6 visits in 3 weeks, why only half the guest beers pumps have been on.Not impressed with the selection either ,too many adnams. If you dont like certain brewerys, you are stuffed.why put 2 or 3 beers from same brewery on in one go?is laziness creeping in?
talesofthebar - 8 Sep 2012 11:22
Been using this pub for about 5 years,so always have a soft spot for this spoons.Good place to start the evening fridays and saturdays, make the most of the beer prices cheap as chips and very busy.
Lots of staff on,but can still take a while to get served.started to drink real ale as they are 1.99 and found some that taste great.good selection all round.
Score of 6 .
cheamjack23 - 17 Aug 2012 13:11
had good pints of brains SA and burton bridge olympic beer last night.other beers on are 2 from w.k kings and everards tiger.next week they have a mini beer festival with beers from hogs back, nelson, triple fff, twickenham and dorkin.
hoppyal - 18 Jul 2012 13:49
Been going downhill, and needs to start pulling its socks up.At least the big girl behind the bar has returned, which should help beer and atmosphere .
talesofthebar - 17 Jul 2012 11:02
great pints of adnams ghost ship last night, other beers were on the stronger side for my liking.its ok in here on tues, wed and sunday nights, other nights are too noisy and busy.nice chat with my mate at the bar, only interupted by the odd mad person.no alias man.
hoppyal - 9 May 2012 11:12
glad the grapes ales on tonight were uninspiring, made me go to the moon and the beer i had lymestone ein stein and milk street ! beer was superb,mr weetos from grapes was drinking the mauldons black adder which he enjoyed.me lovely kim was in which made my night, she so lovely.
hoppyal - 26 Apr 2012 01:22
in last night, and the kelham island pale rider was outstanding.didnt even get down the grapes.as for the staff drinking, who cares they are off duty.the bar staff i know from moon and grapes are young and as good as gold, there is nothing wrong with them letting their hair down, they do have to put up with a load of crap from us customers.
hoppyal - 12 Apr 2012 13:42
Very true cockneypaul, been drinking in pubs for over 40 years,so ive seen all types of drunks. And as ive got older and seen the introduction of fruit flavoured alcoholic drinks (shots)people do get so drunk.i like the moon and i have to say some of the staff are good.Maybe im just a grumpy old man.Saying that if off duty staff get so drunk, its not a good example to the customers of pub.
talesofthebar - 1 Apr 2012 14:40
ALL PUBS HAVE DRUNKEN PEOPLE IN THEM AT SOME TIME OR OTHER AND AS LONG AS THEY DONT CAUSE ANY TROUBLE WITH OTHER CUSTOMERS I FAIL TO SEE ANY PROBLEMS ALTHOUGH IT IS RATHER ANNOYING ESPECIALLY AS WE GET OLDER.
cockneypaul - 30 Mar 2012 14:19
Spent a few hours in here yesterday, some good staff, just wish they would not drink in this pub when off duty. That includes the grapes staff.they get far to drunk. Some staff & customers shouldnt be served in the state they get in.
anonymous - 28 Mar 2012 13:09
came in here at 10 pm tonight to have quick pint, but the bar staff and triple fff moon dance was so good didnt leave to closing time.was a real difference to last time i was in ,well done to cathy and team specially louise who didnt seem to stop working the whole time i was in, and other 3 staff were good as well.credit when credit is due. im not always a moany git.
hoppyal - 30 Jan 2012 01:31
was in last night, and will not be having a late drink in here anymore.the young all girl barstaff need the bouncers working, they dont need to have to deal with the idiots in here.more staff to clear the tables are needed, and why only 1 serving with ten minutes left to closing time.(mind when the last bell rang they did serve the remaining waiting customers.)mate used the middle court yard for a smoke and said it was covered in broken glass.didnt like the atmosphere in here at all.only plus point was a very nice pint of mordue radgie gadgie.
anonymous - 4 Jan 2012 16:18
yeovil star gazer and titanic full steam ahead were fantastic last night, bar staff were good, considering how busy it was.
anonymous - 27 Dec 2011 18:47
this is a typical wetherspoons, was busy with youngsters, and a few older men to right of the bar singing song.nice guinness and some good service.some very hunky lads around.
anonymous - 27 Dec 2011 16:02
Thank goodness there has been a proffesional manager shipped in from the Croyden area ,No doubt she will bring her customer skills with her, headless chicks please note . Learn how to serve when there's a rush on . Not whose next . or are you waiting , then spot your friend coming in and go and serve her . generally a good pub
Adinfinitim - 22 Dec 2011 10:45

anonymous - 14 Dec 2011 16:45
HOPPYAL AT IT AGAIN BUT THIS TIME I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU I WAS ALSO IN THE MOON LAST NIGHT AND FOUND THE SERVICE VERY BAD I LEFT AT 11.35.
IT IS VERY RARE TO HAVE 3 INADEQUATE STAFF ON AT THE SAME TIME THOUGH TO BE FAIR.
I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU SAY YOUR MATE ASKED YOU TO PUT IT ON HERE THOUGH AS THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR VIEWS AND LETS FACE IT YOU USUALLY HAVE PLENTY TO SAY ON HERE YOURSELF SO YOU SHOULDNT QUOTE YOUR MATE AS IT IS RATHER SPINELESS AND COWARDLY.
LASTLY YOU QUOTED ON ONE OF YOUR POSTINGS IM A PALACE TWAT AND YOU KNOW WHO I AM WELL THAT MAYBE SO BUT I NOW KNOW WHO YOU ARE TOO MY FRIEND.

mate i walked in here with last night has asked me to post the following message."we went in here last night and was unable to get served, even though the pub was quiet, the blonde barmaid looked twice and knew we were waiting but decided to continue her conversation with her friends, after being totally ignored 2 other people who had just come to the bar got served by other 2 girls working.after waiting we decided to go elsewhere". he wasnt pleased with the 3 girls working at all, which is a shame as when some of the other staff are working, the service is great .anyway went to the grapes instead and the staff were very professional and helpful in there.

we were in there after work for a pint, friday night the abbot bitter was nectar and at 2.10 a pint good value i had a gallon money well spent, the more you drink the more you save.
rickpat - 19 Nov 2011 18:25
i have to say well done to the manager and staff in here, this is becoming a better pub than the grapes.the beer was brilliant last night, the harvistoun number of the beast was brilliant, mates tried 2 other beers and said they were very good.seemed to be a lot of grapes customers in.one walked up and said the beer selection and quality down there was very poor.he said he would be coming up moon tonight as well and he is normaly in grapes every night.my guinness drinking mate recons the shift manager pours a great pint.
anonymous - 15 Nov 2011 14:23
was in the moon last night, the mordue red was great.this pub seemed much more relaxing now days, without all getting moved from tables to 1 floor as use to happen in last hour.the staff seemed very professional and polite.even the toilets have had a well due refurbish.well done to the manager and staff .liked the way the drinking up time was done as well.also nice to see our mate alan(thats him)great fun.

As well run as any busy 'Spoon. Always a good pint though it get rowdy at weekends and evenings. He's a good singer, that ruddy faced drinker!

very good pub - still not sure why they don't offer a choice of eggs with their breakfast???
ms001 - 22 Jul 2011 16:45
good to see caz from ship of fools in croyden take over this place.just read the local sutton guardian pub spy, which features the moon this week.wonder who the ruddy-faced drinker at the bar, singing franki valli"s "cant take your eyes off of me" is.lol one guess.

been in here a few time in the last month, its growing on me,the beer has been very good and the staff seem better than my christmas visit.still like the grapes more, but worth a visit if up that end of high street.nice to see alan the road sweeper in there,he will be back in grapes on march 8th.think his fat mate is more of a prat when drunk.
anonymous - 22 Feb 2011 15:07
oK Hoppyal no worries.
Alan Honey is barred from Grapes at present so thats the main thing.
He is loosing the Moon customers believe me.
Everyone you talk to who knows him has no time for him whatsoever.
I agree with you that some of the Moon staff dont have a clue whos next to be served.
anonymous - 6 Feb 2011 18:27
cockneypaul, lol.alan was barred for only 3 days, agree with you about said barmaid from grapes, i dont go down there if i know she is working.nothing against the young, just dont want to listen to their noise when i want to relax with a pint. the beer i had in moon was very good, shame that the staff served others, probably regulars when it was my turn to be served and im not that easy to miss.i do enjoy your comments, happy new year.

anonymous - 27 Dec 2010 13:09
Paid my usual Monday Club visit carlsberg was good.
Topic of conversation was the behaviour of some of the women barmaids in The Grapes & there language found the whole thing very amusing.
Many a time have i heard the barstaff in The Grapes telling us customers to watch there language .
Wetherspoons still best value for money in the Sutton area by a mile.
anonymous - 16 Nov 2010 18:25
nice spoons but needs bit of a spruce up now
very busy most nights
anonymous - 20 Sep 2010 17:07
Went there once- never again. Like many others I immediately noticed the smell of vomit and piss intermingled. I guess it must be ingrained into the carpet.

As for the locals... no teeth. Clothes inside-out and probably grown into their skin as they clearly never change them. Worryingly incontinent. Half of them seem to speak gippo lingo and the other half talk backwards as far as I can make out.

This pub needs one thing and that's a visit from the local wrecking ball.
followedthrough - 21 Aug 2010 12:51
This pub must be the worst pub in the area, rude slow staff, if you dont know someone behind the bar you could wait 10 minutes as the staff will serve all friends first. I had a pint of Carlsberg first and it was so flat i brought it back the trouble i had to change it the staff telling me it is ok nothing wrong with it ,ask to speak to the manager he was as rude as the staff serving. The loos were in a terrible mess when i went in on Wednesday night looked like had not been cleaned for a few days, plus 3 young men in one cubicle that is strange. Someone a bit higher needs to take a good look at this pub and try and improve it because it has lost alot of customers in the last few months over staff being rude.
blackdragon66 - 1 Aug 2010 09:50
the manager needs to have a look at the grapes & take some tips from the manager down there on how a pub should be run
rogcs47 - 10 Jul 2010 17:14
Didn't notice the smell & beer was fine. Good collection of "characters" around the place! Preferred the Grapes of the two in Sutton.
Leicesterbeer - 12 Feb 2010 10:13
th smell is always there from wat i can gather.
i think the manager and the irish barmaid like the smell.
worst pub in uk and worst ran pub in the world.
management are clueless.
rogcs47 - 25 Jan 2010 16:56

When I visited for the first time for a few years on Sunday 3rd January 2010 at 1p.m. with two friends for dinner and a drink we were revulsed by the stench of vomit inside the door and appetite killed left immediately. I emailed on their official feedback site and have had no response. I looked around customer feedback sites and was surprised to see this has featured in other postings going back. What is the matter with the manager not to deal with this? Has anyone reported this as an ogoing problem to the London Borough of Sutton Environmental Health Office yet?

bubbleburster - 17 Jan 2010 21:05
I went to this pub on a Saturday evening. The first thing that hits you as you walk through the door is the overwhelming stench of vomit all around the bar area. I had been in this pub about a month before and it had the same stench then so either they haven't bothered to deal with it or their extremely young customers vomit by the bar regularly. I am surprised at the age of the customers. Approximately a third of them looked under age to me but were served without being asked for ID.

Getting served took about 9-10 minutes each time. There were plenty of bar staff on duty (about 5) but they dragged their heels or spent time flirting with each other. None of the bar staff seemed to be able to keep track of who had been waiting the longest and just served the first person they saw after the previous customer. All the bar staff look exceptionally young and fed up. There didn't appear to be any manager on duty to chivvy them up a little.

When last orders were called we bought one last pint. We had only had it for two minutes when an aggressive doorman told us to get the f**k out and took our beer from us, threatening us with violence. Fortunately the other door staff had cooler heads and ushered him away to calm down. It's possible he had just had to deal with another customer who had been unpleasant but I think door staff should be able to control their tempers better.

I haven't tried the food here for a couple of years and for good reason. It was either burned or not heated up properly.

The only thing this pub has going for it is that the beer is cheap and it is open slightly later then the other pubs in Sutton but to be honest if you want a late drink you would be better off planning ahead and getting some beers from the off licence and going home.

It's a shame as this was once a very reasonable pub. I often use Wetherspoon pubs elsewhere and whilst they aren't the best pubs in London they certainly have their place. This Wetherspoons compares very unfavourably with other Wetherspoons in London and the other pubs in Sutton

glennbo - 3 Jan 2010 11:43

Yesterday, slipped into the MOTH (no aroma of chunder...yet) I tried a pint of CAINS FINE RAISIN BEER 5.0%ABV brewed in Merseyside. The last time I tried the scousers favourite the strong raisin flavour was very sickly and one pint was enough. However, this time they seemed to have toned it down and I agree with the tasting notes It could be enjoyed with red meat. Mind you how much of the tasting notes is Bullxxxx, I dont know.

I also sampled WELLS BANANA BREAD BEER 4.5%ABV brewed by Wells and Young...Surprise, Surprise it does taste like Banana. If you dont notice the colour you could be drinking a Banana milk shake. However, both pints went down a treat.

Hudge - 14 Nov 2009 07:56
On Monday 2nd November I popped in and as a regular I enjoy the comfortable, relaxed and clean surroundings of this pub.

Not being a real ale aficionado i thought Id wet my whistle and sample the wide selection of ales.

I settled for a COTLEIGH LONG EARED OWL 4.9% by the Cotleigh brewery in Somerset. Very nice pint, described as an amber coloured beer. However, I didnt taste any citrus mentioned in the tasting notes.
Tried a pint of THWAITES LIBERATION ALE 4.5%,Thwaites brewery Lancashire. Described as a chestnut coloured beer, didnt get too much of the flavour mentioned in the book either but still a delicious pint.

Visited again on Tuesday and sampled GREEN KING BOSS HOGG 4.1%coloured ale with a distinctive taste of malt.
Then had the TOSHis AMBER ALE 4.4% brewed by Toshi Ishimore. I would say it was a Red coloured ale. The flavour reminded me of Saki, or was it herbs I could taste still very nice.

On Wednesday I tried the MOORHOUSES BLACK PANTHER4.8% from Lancashire. A very dark ale with aroma of chocolate but failed to detect the caramel.
Then I sampled the ANKER GOUDENCAROLUSAMBRIO 8% from Belgium. CAROLUS is dark and more copper in looks and went down nicely. Sadly, only sold in half-pint glasses. I bought two halfs a and asked for a empty pint glass but was refused. . Four halfs later and i felt at one with the world and at peace with god. I also felt I could take on David Haye, the Boxing champion, with one arm tied behind my back. Dont remember the journey home.

Friday had two pints of PIER ALE 5.% RCH Brewery in Somerset. Billed as an amber ale(Id call it amber noir) an easy drinking beer which is consistent with all the ales I have sampled so far.

The MOTH is an excellent venue to enjoy hot food and a few pints. The service is good and the staff seem to handle it well during the busy times. Be warned, on Friday and Saturday evenings any attractive young girls (glamorous young things)will be served before any middle aged men.

At lunchtimemid week, the family area does consist of elegant middle aged ladies with children and grandchildren and office staff enjoying the Thursday curry.

There is a small cobble stoned smoking area which is very popular except with those sitting near the open door on a cold evening. There is seating outside at the front of the pub. It is spacious and even has a beer garden at the family end of the pub. In general, the MOTH is cleaner than most spoons pubs

Sometimes late on Friday its full of glamorous young things who enjoy a pre club drink. However, I was informed that the vague aroma of chunder near the bar, was due to the glamorous young things returning from Chicagos having been thrown out for being too Elephants trunk. So they return to the MOTH for more drink or just to be ill.

Hudge - 14 Nov 2009 07:34
Plenty of staff on duty. Good range of beers and our 2 pints were in top condition. Large pub begining to look shabby. It was just starting to get "lively" about 5pm on Saturday. An adequate Wetherspoons, we made our excuses and left
southfields - 11 Oct 2009 12:17
i have used this pub since the day it opened, it had a refurb;in 98 or 99, it is well over due for another, but other then that, the pub the staff and the customers are great and like all spoons pubs the more you drink and eat, the more you save.
rickpat - 8 Sep 2009 17:02
Terrible pub. Overpowering smell of chunder anywhere near the bar. disgusting.
charliew - 30 Jul 2009 15:55
good family pub
rickpat - 17 Jul 2009 16:56
As well as the usual suspects, the real ales on were Weltons Heatwave; Arkells Moonlight; Naylors Original Brewers Choice; and Independence Ale, which is apparently brewed specially for Wetherspoons by one Tonya Cotter of the Bend Brewing Company, of Oregon USA. As it was 4 July, and the clip sported an arresting image of Uncle Sam, I just had to go for the Independence Ale. It was pretty much as I expected an ale brewed in the USA to be light in colour and very well hopped. But I thought it was an excellent addition to JDWs stable and an innovative idea getting an ale from the USA outside their biennial beer festivals. Not bad at 1.89 a pint (or 1.39 for me with my newly acquired CAMRA vouchers).

Anyway, this pub has certainly upped its game since Rogers visit last October (though judging from various reviews there was certainly considerable room for improvement). Gone are the unseemly odours, and the tables were all clean and clutter free. But I was in there at 11.40 AM on a Saturday morning. Even then it took 10 15 minutes to get served and it may be that when it gets very busy the staff will be overly stretched. Its a typical Wetherspoons pub (but unusually on two levels), with the usual range of high stools/tables, sofas, normal tables and chairs, and booths. Based on my one visit, its not the worst Wetherspoons I have been in just typical for the brand, which means that it is somewhere where you can get excellent ale at reasonable prices.
RexRattus - 5 Jul 2009 13:32
Big square shaped spoons with an open plan layout. Couple of benches in shade out the back to sit outside, nothing amazing 4 a spoons. 6.5/10

The smell at the bar is is like someone has been sick there for a week. The pub is dirty i had a glass of wine and had to change the glass 3 times .the moon on the hill is giving wetherspoons a bad name. needs a good clean , the toilets need to be sorted out as well
makeminealarge1 - 1 Apr 2009 12:25
A spacious but has a rather formulaic Wetherspoons with all the usual characteristics however I can only underline pretty much everything that has been mentioned before (and I am usually the first person to defend Wetherspoons). The bar smelt like the world spewing championships had been held there during the afternoon, trying to find a table not piled up with dirty dishes was nigh on impossible, only 1 guest beer (which wasnt up to the usual high Wetherspoons quality) and a generally down market crowd made this one of the most unappealing Wetherspoons I have encountered. I thought I may have just called on an off day but having read the previous postings, it is clear that the problems are an intrinsic part of the pub and not a good advert for the management. This is one of the worst examples of a Wetherspoons and the sort of place that gives the chain a bad name.

enter this dickensian grog-house at 10am on any given morning and witness the debauchery, the despair, the hustlers, the whores, the never-weres and the never will-be"s,the sheer awful lonely desolation of knowing that this is the last god forsaken stop on a journey to oblivion and wonder no more why this once great, proud and truely mighty country is now no more than a rancid pimple on the worlds arse. i loved it

MrKennedy - 11 Mar 2008 13:42
Not sure what's happened to this place. It's such a struggle to get served, never enough bar staff, long wait for food, and is generally grotty within as is much of its clientele. Probably they don't make any effort as the punters will come through as it's in Sutton and serves (after a bit of a wait) el cheapo beer. Don't go in unless you really don't care about the atmosphere and just want to get drunk cheaply.
stevosgloriosus - 10 Feb 2008 22:11

The pros were good also but I did have to haggle.
McBaron_Beer - 2 Jan 2008 23:00
Pros: Cheap, good range, OK place to meet young and old drunkards of Sutton, booths.

Cons: Utterly filthy, chavified, glasses never never ever get collected, not enough seats.

Stop taking the piss Mr. Wetherspoon!
Fart - 18 Dec 2007 19:54
Visited this pub two days running:-

1. Sunday 2 September between 1445 and 1730. Fairly quick service both food and drink, obviously helped by the Irish manageress being on duty. Only 2 guest ales on but after about an hour a third one was available. It's not too bad as Wetherspoons pubs go particularly at this time of the day. It's on the gloomy side and could do with a proper refurbishment.

2. Monday 3 September between 1545 and 1800. My god what a difference a day makes. At this time of the day all the tables on the top floor were covered with dirty plates, glasses and the normal detritus from a busy lunch-time. It took one member of staff nearly an hour to clear this area even then the tables were not wiped down. When I was using the gents, the duty manager rushed in, looked in both toilets, switched on both hand dryers and rushed out all in the space of 10 seconds!!

There was only one guest ale on and another appeared just before we left. The excuse given was that the lines had broken!! The Irish manageress was not there so presumably it was her day off. It showed as the staff were quite hopeless and to some extent on the defence.

Quite honestly I don't think I will be going back there in a rush and I know my wife will most certainly not.

I am coming to the opinion that the Wetherspoons empire is in freefall and that the original ideas of Tim Martin have been dispensed with. I don't know what his current role is, although he still puts his name to their house magazine and he is shown as chairman. I understand that he still carries out visits to pubs, but quite honestly what do they achieve. I say this bearing in mind some awful pubs that make up this chain.
wyndham - 4 Sep 2007 20:10
Like most Spoons no redeeming features other than some interesting ales. Had to wait 25 minutes for lunch (and we only ordered a baguette). Other than that drab, random and frequented by the great unwashed, a bit like the rest of Sutton really.
AleKing - 28 Aug 2007 13:11

I deeply enjoy going to pubs and believe you get what you pay for.

If money was that tight, I would favour a can of Special Brew in the park over this place!
harbourdrinker - 19 Jul 2007 14:11
I want the guiness book of records to get down here and confirm my suspicions that one of the regulars holds the record for making a pint last the longest. Admitedly it doesn't make much difference how long you leave it as the lager is utter s**t. If you gave me a choice between letting a jehovah's witness into my home and having a pint in here I'd choose the Jehovah's witness. Actually that's a lie I'd take the Jehovah's witness down here in the hope that the cleaning fluid lager killed them and the place got shut down. How's that for two for the price of one.
lazy - 3 Jul 2007 15:12
Escaped from All bar One opposite, had a bitter, lovely pint and much cheaper than opposite. Thanks.
hseal43 - 28 Jun 2007 11:26
A most unpleasant bar to drink at because they leave the doors open & the wind whistles through. Beer range varies, but always tastes OK. Downstairs lobby - smoky haze. Upstairs lobby, pleasant but a little dark at times.

A great pub for dirty old men to stare at young girls wearing next to nothing.
Wilson_MacDonald - 27 Feb 2007 07:26
The fortunes of this pub perfectly mirror those of Sutton itself. Ten years ago it was a pleasant enough place now it's just a cr*phole that's been overrun by morons.

Chaverpoons of Sutton
anonymous - 25 Sep 2006 13:36
I visit this pub about 2 times per month whilst in Sutton shopping. The up-stairs non-smoking area is a bit like a works canteen expecially at lunch time. Always a good selection of real ale. I tend not to hang about, have at the most 2 pints, as it's not a very prepossessing pub.
anonymous - 20 Sep 2006 19:15
Chavorama.
bionicdog - 7 Aug 2006 15:52
First of all, it's a Wetherspoons. You have to take the rough with the smooth in most of their pubs... sure, you might have to share bar space with a group of teenagers drinking their alcopops and bottled fizz, or a gang of pensioners dithering for ages before buying a sweet sherry, but that's because Wetherspoons buy and sell in bulk in order to pass on the savings to us all. They also have a fantastic company attitude to real ale, selling beers from lots of local breweries and microbreweries and sponsoring the "Bar Nouveau" at the Great British Beer Festival. A this particular branch, they take requests for future guest beers and will give you a free sample of anything you want to try.

That's the general picture, but looking more closely... the Moon on the Hill has seen better days. The carpets are sticky and stained, and the furniture all smells appalling. As far as I'm aware, it's only had one refit since it opened (1994?) and this really shows. The staff varies, because they're mostly (it seems) students... that's fine, I don't expect to know the staff by name in a large city centre chain pub, but Wetherspoons really need to be more selective. The good ones are great, but the bad ones are barely functioning lifeforms.

Overall... there's a lot to recommend (as long as you don't go after 9pm any night of the week, when it's like a disorderly creche) but the management could do *so* much more with this space. It's a sad example of neglect.
sfocata - 3 Aug 2006 09:06
Went there Sunday lunchtime, a couple of OK beers on, although most people were drinking lager. The toilets are disgusting, with one of the two soap dispensers missing (nicked?), and the whole placed reeked of pish. But of course, being Wetherspoons, some spotty oik with the manners of an amoeba has proudly marked that they had inspected them each hour. Tim Martin, sort this out.
anotherpintplease - 18 Jul 2006 19:09
Beer OK, always at least one or two interesting ones. Friday & Saturday nights, packed with the younger element getting wasted on cheap lager & alcopops. Downstairs room gets very smoky & rarely cleaned properly. Main bar area is horrible when the penguins on the door insist on opening the main doors to the elements.
Wilson_MacDonald - 19 Jun 2006 12:14
pub is typical wetherspoon,it stinks of sick, manager is a prick and you w8 and w8 2 b served, only go there coz they do sum good real ales, really needs improving

Beer's normally good (ish) when it's on, lots frequently off.
Staff range from unhelpful to incompetent.
Lunchtime it's not too bad, and the price is good.
I'm told the food is fair to good.
johnbabercomb - 26 Jan 2006 23:50
Quite possibly the worst pub I've ever been to. Went there on a Sunday evening with my boyfriend and his friends. It had no atmosphere, was dirty, smelled of sick and the police were outside arresting some of the local chavs. The majority of the customers looked like they'd be getting up for school the next morning. Needless to say, we only stayed for one drink.

If you.....like waiting 20 minutes to be served, like watery beer that is getting towards the end of it's shelf life, like having people around you litterally falling over drunk, like the smell of sick in the bar area or think that the cheaper the booze, the better the place must be......... Then this is the pub for you (and you are welcome to it)
Leslie - 23 Feb 2005 16:27
What a horrible place. Wetherspoons are such a victim of their own success. Good, clean , friendly places where everyone was welcome and the beer was cheap, they have now just become magnets for burberry-clad alcopop-guzzling tweenines and old drunks. If you are down on your luck and want a few cheapies before heading on, maybe, but wouldn't advise it.
MATTHEW - 23 Sep 2004 17:15
Last time I was there, someone was sick just inside the entrance by the bar. Just about okay for a lunchtime drink, but forget going there in the evening.

As Pete Townsend said; "The Kids Are Alright", but that was before they entered the Moon On The Hill. Once inside it's mostly teenage girls trying to hide their puberty under acres of make-up and archetypal "England U21 Supporters" mixing it with old boys stretching their booze budget. The "White Van" of pubs, complete with St George flags, dents and angry young man at the wheel.
A - 20 Jun 2004 06:43
worst pub in sutton! no atmosphere, watered down beer that tastes like sour milk, full of kids who are easily seen as under age and all go around talking and thinking they are eminem!

Kim. We'd been drinking there for several years and always had the same problem. When finished, we always returned our glasses to the bar & didn't leave them for the staff to clear up.

I don't smoke, so I go to the no-smoking section. I wish the doorstaff were as hot at stopping people smoking up there than they were at trying to get rid of people who were just finishing their drink.

Nice because it is cheap but it gets way too busy for my liking on Friday and Saurday nights. Full of teenagers getting drunk before they head to the clubs so if you want a nice quiet drink then don't go here

Its a Weatherspoons and conforms to the model almost perfectly. One of the better boozers in Sutton if you happen to find yourself there.

All right during the day, but gets busy at night, Friday and Saturday nights are just too crowded to enjoy.

Shooter boy is tons of fun. it is full of some rather young ppl, upon further investigation, they were all 18-19, but it was still a good laugh. and FYI, wray and nephew is 63% abv!

and Dan! couldn't u just help out and move to the smoking section so they can start to clean, i've worked in a busy pub and it makes all the difference if ppl abandon a section so u can start the long process of clean up.
Kim - 14 Dec 2003 13:55
Last time I went there. They were seeling doubles of Wray & Nephews rum (65%) for 2.50

Staff great and door staff friendly???

Obviously 'Daisy' was a Wetherspoons employee at some stage or has mate(s) working there.

The staff are generally useless, especially during the busier periods. And the doorstaff are w**kers. Flat out agressive and see everyone as a troublemaker.

You just try to finish your pint in the no-smoking section anytime after 10.45 and you'll see what I mean.

Oh and the food is shit.

Why have they stopped selling the beloved Jack Daniels????????? Whats that all about?????? Not a bad pub cos the drinks are so cheap!

Great place to start off the night, cheap booze!!! Although saying that if you are over the age of 30 be warned you might feel a little old. Staff great and door people always polite.
