Triple Crown Inn, Richmond

back to pub details

user reviews of the Triple Crown Inn, Richmond

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sadly another pub bites the dust. Some say it is permanently closed, others say there’s a chance it may reopen as there is renovation work being carried out but then again people are disagreeing wether it is being converted into offices or flats but I’ll let you know the outcome.
Not that anyone reads this site anymore.
Was my favourite pub in Richmond even though Mick was a miserable goat but Preeya,Claire and Ally were beautiful friendly barmaids who made my evenings in here over twenty years ago very pleasant
I miss you girls xx

Marmite pub.
I like it a lot; and have found it friendly, the beer to be in good condition (and cheaper than pretty much everywhere in Richmond) and a great example of a traditional pub.
But you will either love it or hate it, it's rather different to more or less all the other pubs/bars in Richmond and very old school.
mike_s - 12 Apr 2018 10:20
My favourite pub in Richmond, proper old school boozer, landlord is mad as a hatter, but great real ales (he knows how to keep them....the teenagers that staff all the other local pubs haven't a clue)
Barmaids are gorgeous...even before you start drinking....stellar after 6 pints!!!
Locals are welcoming and amusing to be around...not cliquey at all...
It has live music on Fridays & Sundays....local bands Honeyshack & Roland Rock are regularly there and well worth checking out....
Popular with London Scottish & Richmond rugby supporters on a Saturday afternoon....can get rammed during six nations, but you can usually get served quicker than in the Orange Tree or the Sun
And...there's even a dartboard!!!

Sought out The Triple Crown hoping to find a 'friendly, local , real ale pub' in Richmond. Nice sunny day but chilly so wanted to be inside. Sadly no bar staff evident and locals propping bar not keen to tell us who was serving. Eventually a young lady arrived. 3 ales on and my partner and I both chose Proper Job which was served in excellent condition. The pub is tired and rather run down but that was not our gripe. There was a large screen TV blaring out pop videos which in itself is distracting enough but incongruous to the surroundings of the pub, in our opinion, but the unfriendly locals (all quite mature well dressed gentlemen) insisted on viewing and listening to music videos at a very high volume on their hand held devices. This competing against the TV output made it impossible to talk or enjoy our pints. The bar lady made no attempt to stop the conflict of sound but continued to lounge against the wall engrossed in her mobile. We took our drinks outside where we did encounter friendly locals which was very nice but sadly did not stop for a further drink. Some reviews regarding this pub enthuse about the landlord and what a great pub he runs. Whilst I appreciate he cannot be there all the time I feel his presence was sadly missed on this lovely Sunday afternoon. I don't think this is a pub either my partner or I shall be returning to any time soon.

Comfortably the worst pub in Richmond, and has been for some years. Dark, scruffy and always empty, apart from the people you wished were not in there with you. Avoid.
Matthew_of_Ham - 7 Jul 2016 19:18
The Triple Crown has always been one of my favourite pubs in Richmond, primarily because I believe it is free of tie. So the ale range does vary. Yesterday it was Youngs Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar, Stonehenge Sign of Spring & Dorset Brewing Co Flashman's Clout. I seem to remember Twickenham beers being on the last time I came. But the pub was much quieter than my last visit and it seemed to have lost a little of its atmosphere. It also seemed a bit more grubby than I remember. Still a welcome change from the Youngs and Fullers pubs in town.
blue_scrumpy - 4 Apr 2016 20:36
Off the beaten track, which ensures a dedicated band of punters. It has a slightly lived-in appearance inside but no objection to that---I would hate to see it become gastrified. A friendly atmosphere and a good range of beers; long may it flourish!

Oops. Thanks DaveE6 for pointing out our oversight. It has now been rectified and our opening times are available on our website. Thanks again. Arv

Since we hadn't visited Richmond for a while, we took the precaution of checking out the pubs in advance and decided The Triple Crown looked interesting - both from it's beer choice and the impression it was a "proper" pub. We'd looked at it's website but couldn't see any details of opening times, so weren't completely surprised to find when we arrived at about 2.00pm on Tuesday that it didn't open for another hour. A waste of time! We headed back to The Princes Head instead...

Great old fashioned boozer. My personal favourite in Richmond. I for one hope that it never gets the gastro treatment!
slacker - 1 Aug 2014 12:57
Beer: excellent eclectic range and condition.
Service: tip top
Food: haven't tried.
Atmosphere: the back street boozer which is friendly however many are in.
*** A good pub ***

A great off-the-beaten-track pub with a fine range of real ales (Sign of Spring is a fave - tastes great and it's green!).

Things I love about it:

Excellent slim drinking tables,
Harvey the landlord - witty and friendly and very happy to talk ales and drinking in general.
Great service from all staff - Went in for the first time to attend a quiz and spoke to the barmaid, went in a couple of weeks later and she remembered my name! Now that's service.

Can get busy if London Scottish or Richmond are playing at home, but this also adds to the atmophere.

All in all a great pub.

My dearest darling HAVANA888, you can't keep the people happy all the time and everybody has an off day. I apologise. However, if you are the person I recently barred, you should learn how to behave. You were warned more than once.
HarveyTC - 11 Mar 2014 22:04
As much as I hate going against the crowd if I ran into the same beloved Harvey this afternoon that everyone seems to rave about then he's changed completely. What a thoroughly unlikeable person he is. Obnoxious and abrupt would sum him up. STAY AWAY, the area has much better and more hospitable pubs to give your money to.
Havana888 - 8 Mar 2014 21:44
Excellent. One from a lost era...if you can find it!
beer_dreamer - 14 Nov 2012 20:30
Just behind Richmond rugby club, this is an old school pub with guest ales and a working fire place. Just the spot to warm up post match, I will be partaking in the SA before the England vs Wales 6N match!
NLBS - 22 Feb 2012 12:28
I went here on Friday mainly because of the reviews that I have read in BITE and also becuase they were in the 2010 GBG (I dont have the 2011 version) and I was not disappointed.

This pub is tucked down a little enclave behind the rugby ground therefore I guess a lot of Richmond drinkers are unaware of this place (no doubt that this is a good thing judging by some of the bellends that inhabit the town centre bars and pubs)

The first thing that I noticed that this really is an uspoilt gem, very traditional comfortable place that were even selling rolls behind the bar.

Secondly I noticed a decent number of handpubs one of which was despensing Twickenham Spring Ale that was in fine fettle however you would demand that this would be the case at it originates about 2 miles away down the A316.

Finally, I noticed that the gaffer of this fine establishment was none than Harvey who I know from the old days when he ran the Artful Dodger in Kingston. The Dodge as it was affectionately known was always a cheery place to enjoy a drink and since Harvey left it a seen a great demise into another poncey souless bar & kitchen.

The Triple Crown is therefore testament to Harvey that he can run a decent boozer and I am in no doubt that some of the old Dodge regulars would be equally at home in this place.
BeerGutt - 4 Jul 2011 11:41
Visited on Sat with 3 other friends and we all really enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere as well as the best pint of Brains 'Bread of Heaven' tasted outside of Cardiff. Will definitely return the next time back in Richmond.
dotball - 16 Mar 2011 07:12
The Triple Crown goes from strength to strength. Landlord Harvey is celebrating the installation of a new cooler at the pub by holding its first-ever beer festival. All real ales - including the ubiquitious London Pride are 2 a pint while stocks last.

And thanks to the new cooler they are in excellent condition, so don't expect them to last long!
Richmonddrinker - 9 Aug 2010 00:49
One of my favourite pubs. Perfect beer, be it regulars like London Pride or their good range of guest ales. Never had a bad pint here. Guv'nor's a wicked bloke with very good taste in music and there's always the chance of a good chat with the punters. An unspoilt gem.

Ps @ Spanish...Hombre: 'BEST STELLA IN LONDON'- What does this mean?
therichieboy - 16 Apr 2010 13:03
Proper pub with proper beer and staff who care, but it is hidden away so you don't get the morons coming in. If you like All Bar One avoid the Triple Crown as much as possible - because you would only upset the people there, who appreciate what a pub should be like. Keep it this way. It's wonderful.
derekwinchester - 8 Dec 2009 22:32
WHAT A PUB!!!...WHAT A GUVNOR!!!...BEST STELLA IN LONDON...THIS PUB SHOULD BE NAMED HARVEYLAND...AND THE SAMBUCA SLAMMERS...WOOHOO!!!...GREAT LOCALS...NICE PEOPLE...BIG RAY...STINKY IAN...GREAT GUYS...SUNDAY ROAST AT ITS BEST...WELL DONE HARVEY!!!...
Spanish...Hombre - 29 Nov 2009 15:21
Great ales, great food on Sundays and rugby days, great pub. A superb range of real ale is always on offer at this hidden gem of a pub ... from the ubiquitious London Pride to well-known brews such as Deuchars and Landlord and lesser known local delicacies such as Twickenham Original and Naked Ladies.

Sunday lunches are a steal at 6 ...
beermonster1314 - 21 Nov 2009 20:19
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this great pub. It's run in the best traditions of British boozers by a landlord, Harvey, who really cares about his customers and his pub.

I've been drinking in Richmond for more than 20 years and, having visited the majority of the borough's pubs, I feel qualified to say that this is the best one.

In fact, it's so good that Harvey even spends what little time he takes out from serving behind the bar to drink with his customers in front of it. That says it all really. 10 out of 10.
Richmonddrinker - 7 Nov 2009 18:41
Great backstreet boozer that feels a million miles away from the somewhat disappointing pubs on the main drag not five minutes walk away.

Knowledgeable landlord Harvey is a terrific host, always has a selection of great ales to offer at less than 3 a pint and plays a large variety of excellent music as well.

Those of a less inquisitive nature will enjoy the London Pride, which is always on and always excellent.

Huge Sunday lunches are fantastic value at 6.

JoeyRamone - 7 Nov 2009 17:44
Nice to have a pub in Richmond one can depend upon being good.
Princemonolulu - 28 Aug 2009 09:30
Enthusiatic welcome Sat, and guv offered tasters while I dithered - TT Landlord, Downton Apple Blossom, Twickenham Original, a.n.other (Pride?), and the right side of 3 may be rare round here. Long bar to right, tables & banquette seating along opp wall, dartboard in use at far end, a handful of chatty regulars, '66 world cup final showing on plasma nr entrance. I can understand what my pal Maldenman was saying if visiting solo at quiet time, and getting across the A316 on foot is a challenge, but I liked the pub, and how nice to get a cheery hello these days.
trainman - 27 Jul 2009 10:38
Easily the best pub in Surrey. Harvey the landlord creates a welcoming atmosphere with great music in a traditional pub that serves great ale. What more could you want?
Triumph_of_common_sense - 19 Jul 2009 22:28
Surprised to see I've not reviewed or rated this before. This is a very pleasant backstreet local's pub which as John Bonser notes is located by the rugby ground a little away from Richmond town centre. It's a good boozer and always has a decent line-up of ales.
grecian - 1 Jul 2009 13:01
Small single bar free house in the back streets of Richmond close to the rear entrance to Richmond's rugby ground at Old Deer Park.

This pub is oner of Richmond's hidden secrets - it's off the main Richmond pub "circuit" and is seemingly only known to locals and the more discerning rugby followers who throng the place out on Twickenham big match days..

It's a narrow long single bar retaining a traditional comfortable feel, with a mahogany bar and frosted leaded windows. There's an upstairs bar with a balcony, which is not normally open, but can be hired for functions.

There's usually 4 -5 real ales on. On my recent visit these were London Pride, Brains Steaming Wagon, Downton Apple Blossom and Hogs Back Dark Mild. The Brains Steaming Wagon was a tasty malty pint, served in good condition.

The pub has had some GBG listings in recent years. Harvey, the relatively new guv'nor is an affable chap, enthusiastic about his beer.

Richmond is still, unfortunately, largely dominated by Youngs and Fullers pubs, in most of which the beer is inconsistent in quality. The Triple Crown is worth seeking out for the opportunity to sample a beer in good condition that you probably won't have had before

JohnBonser - 1 Jul 2009 12:44
More traditional and atmospheric pub than many in Richmond, possibly because the tides of 'gentrification' have been kept at bay. Went just before closing time and it was quiet but not prohibitively so. One long bar and a traditionally furnished room, mostly in red, giving a warm and cosy feel The beer on offer was very good, i plumped for ever-relaible Pride. Not far from the station and a safe bet for a traditional experience and good pint.
Carlurmston - 28 Mar 2009 10:49
Ducked out of the Orange Tree for a swift half here. The atmosphere was far better with music at a much more pleasant volume, making it far more conducive to conversation. Real ales on offer were Twickenham Naked Ladies, Fullers London Pride and Taylor Landlord. It also had the best cider I have found in Richmond - Aspalls. I'm not sure about the red light shades though.
blue_scrumpy - 9 Feb 2009 20:01
Had some fine Twickenham Ales here last night. Excellent hospitality from the Landlord. Pity about the music, which lost it a point,
KTh - 23 Jan 2009 11:14
A down to earth Rugby-loving pub round a side street in Richmond, very little beer range when I visited but as Maldenman's post shows this is not always the case - there were four hand pumps I think but only London Pride was on. A pleasant surprise to find somewhere so unpretentious and straightforward in this area.
rainlight - 24 Dec 2008 09:30
My visit mid afternoon possibly doesn't do this place justice as being the only customer takes the edge off the experience somewhat. A single rectangular room, bar against one wall and traditional tables with bench/chair arrangement opposite. The decor is made up of rugby photographs, plates, jugs and various brass artifacts but does not succeed in masking a slightly shabby tired feel. The TV on the front wall was showing some unnecessary crappy US sitcom, why?
Brains Rev James, Pride and Twickenham Naked Ladies on, Twickenham Original being pulled through to go on later. Pump clips of previous guests all along the bar . Pies and Cornish pasties available at 2.20. Decent beer but down a mark for the TV.
Maldenman - 25 Oct 2008 10:26
OK well Mick has departed and has been replaced by the very enthusiastic and affable Harvey who knows his ale's and is happy to talk you through the range which included Twickenham Ales, Griffin(?) and the stock standard Pride - tried the Nelson's summer ale which was of good quality. The Guinness at the TC is teriffic.

Easily the best pub in Richmond and with a landlord who is keen to carry on the unique appeal of the TC, I look forward to many more beers here!
BenEd - 21 Jul 2008 14:40
An excellent pub, slightly off the beaten track, but certainly worth a visit.
I_love_Ellie - 30 Apr 2008 13:02
The well known bar-keep of this pub, Mick Carty, has departed, 24Feb2008, so its future is open to debate, as the quality of ale.
stmargaretsman - 26 Feb 2008 16:14
Great pub, with a fantastic pint.
silentbob9484 - 23 Jan 2008 12:03
A great pub. You get the finest London Pride in the borough, plus other rela ales and mick and staff keep the stuff decent and served with pride and passion.
Super location next to the Richmond Athletic Ground, home to London Scottish and Richmond rugby clubs.

Upstairs private bar available.

Well worth a regular visit.
stmargaretsman - 3 Aug 2007 14:50
I had a cold beer here in June (during that glorious World Cup month..!) my first pint in this boozer. I found it by accident, but I stayed longer than I intended. Small premises with 'big' heart. I liked the place, and so will you if you like beer and rugby!
Right next to Richmond Athletic Ground (Old Deer Park) isn't that where London Welsh play rugby..? You can smell the mud & turf from the bar..! TJ
TeeJay - 2 Aug 2006 00:15
Agree with previous contributors - great pub, well worth seeking out

How many pubs do you know in Richmond where the boss is actively socialising and drinking with his customers - you don't get that in All Bar One, I bet ?

Adnams was off last night, but they had Banks Bitter on, a rarity down South. ( Banks comes from Wolverhampton, for those who don't know )

One of the area's increasingly rare proper pubs - let's hope it stays as it is
JohnBonser - 17 Jul 2006 12:32
The Triple Crown Inn is an absolute gem. I visited twice last night (21/06/06) firstly to check it out then later with two friends. Everyone both sides of the bar is friendly.

Beers on last night were London Pride, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Adnams Bitter. The Timothy Taylor was on excellent form and reasonably priced for the area at 2.60 per pint.

The pub is traditionally furnished with red being the main theme. It also benefits from being away from the main high street thus not getting overcrowded.

DO visit this pub - you will not be disappointed.
lad_newton - 22 Jun 2006 11:13
great pub.
jamie.nakin - 22 Jun 2006 00:06
Used to go in here when i was seventeen. great place, still ffriendly, great selection of beers, a real pub, doesn't pretend to be anything else.
onlyhereforthebeer - 29 Apr 2006 18:47
Well worth a visit. Good beer and pleasant atmosphere.
mally - 23 Jul 2005 13:21
Used to go in this place after Army Cadets, in camoflage kit and caked in cam cream. It was a good pint and a warm welcome from this place that makes the Triple Crown very special. Top pub!
yourhardkorehero - 19 Apr 2005 13:04
Small, friendly pub, with excellent range of unusual, well kept ales. Not particularly quiet - it's right next door to a rugby club and on my visit, it was full of players arguing about the game they'd just lost.
foxski - 28 Mar 2005 16:47
A very well hidden pub, I would guess would be a good atmosphere for watching Rugby, considering the title.
TheGP - 10 Mar 2005 07:36
Nice little back street local, four handpumps serving beer the way the English are supposed to like thier beer. Warm & Flat. But at least not vinegar this visit, unlike last time I ventured here.
ssteven1 - 28 Jan 2005 13:05
Great little pub, hidden away from Friday nights marauding chavsters . If you know where it is-for Gods sake keep quiet about it !!!!
anonymous - 10 Jan 2005 11:05
Lovely small quiet pub tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the high street. Friendly staff and friendly punters - they all seemed to be locals/regulars. Good place to go for a quiet drink.
