Brentwood Bitter was OK, but I nearly before I got any as service was appalling. Pub was basically empty in early evening midweek and barmaids stood around drinking tea or coffee in the back room and chatting, while the customers need serving.

Now called the Suttons Arms, and a vast improvement since the Hogshead days, when service was poor and they were always running out of beers. I went in here with some friends to watch the Man U v Spurs game. They was a good selection of ales - the Brentwood bitter was particularly good. Good service and reasonably priced.

What a difference a new manager makes....More women and less chavs, which is hard to do in dear old Hornchurch. Food's alright, at least it gets to your table quick enough, unlike the local 'Spoons. Looks like they're throwing a bit of cash at the DJ's,which are miles better rhan previous years.

popped in last time was in the area (during the day) for a couple of pints on my travels , Dave the old manager has been pensioned off and a few of the other staff have moved on as well , maybe a good thing maybe a bad thing who knows , but the Hogs does seem to be retaining staff (some of them)

only had a couple of pints of john smiths which was ok , the pub was quite busy around midday ish with diners

Went in last week almost a year after my last visit at 11am and had the all day breakfast at 390p which included a Guinness which usually sells at 270p so the breakfast worked out at 120p for double everything. The food was well cooked and great value at 120p incredible.

Real ales included Bombardier so not much selection .

Overall not a bad experience but poor selection of ales.
I give 6/10.

I am saddened to read these comments. Some mates and I used to go in there after our club on a Monday night for some good quality ale at reasonable prices. But we stopped going in there when they kept running out of beer, and the staff got a bit surly. We now go into JJ Moons. I know that the kids have to go somewhere, but must it be every pub in Hornchurch?

to redo my last..

i wont be going back there after my second visit..

beer was fine, football was good prices were ok..

getting a phone call from my mate aftr we had both left for our homes stating that some chavs from the pub had tried to give him a kicking because we were playing pool when they wanted to does not endear me to the pub or area.
luckily my mate gave them a kicking instead.

Went here recently for the football only because we couldnt see the screens in the firkin down the road.
good priced beer, loads of screens, loud shouting muppets..

but as has been mentioned previous, they are everywhere these days.
more than likely to pop back if my mates decide to leave the Romford area for pastures new
Jackrum - 2 May 2008 07:23
Went there only once never again the beer is rubbish.

Is more of a younger persons pub which is why i go in there. u can get sum complete prats but u get them every where. Great place to start out.

popped in last week on my travels , think it was tuesday , quite a few new faces (staff and customers) the tall blonde grunger barmaid was a absoulute disgrace the way she bitched and moaned about old people , all because the barmaid misheard her order and the lady corrected her ..... mmmmm staff are slipping , not like the days of Paul and Carol , but in fairness , the beer werent bad , little pricey for the area but drinkable beer .

i will say the majority of the staff seem to be pretty clueless about customer service and beer , personally its a younger persons pub , but its ok during the day for a quick snifter
2/10 from me , mainly because of the staff

I never used to use this pub as it had a bit of a reputation but now go in there every Saturday night after football and i think is a great pub . Loads of screens in the place , beer is reasonably priced , Bar Staff are polite and lots of ladies all dressed up and looking fine and the music is really good on a Saturday night . Ive been ther about 20 times and have only seen one arguemnt and the bouncers are on the ball. The only thing i dont like is that i went here for an England match recently and was told that i was not allowed in , when i asked why they said thay had too many peopel in there , i asked if i coudl wait along with 10 other who started queing and then after 5 minutes they let us in without anyone coming out . Im not sure why they do thsi as i have seen it busier . Strange
Moodie1 - 16 Apr 2007 08:20
been in here recently on a Thursday and Sunday the music was A1 the DJ spins the best of tunes.
Crowd ok, although the blokes dress sense is open to debate, would avoid the draught.

I am a fifty year old man and I was asked to be frisked at the door by a surly doorman. I refused so I was not let in. Judging by the type of folk in here, I do not think it was the place for me.
King_Kong - 10 Dec 2006 03:58
The old crowd of trouble makers are still in here, and every week you can guarantee a serious fight. Not somewhere I would take my wife for a quiet drink. If you like the film "Roadhouse" you will be quite at home here. All entrants to the pub are frisked by big surly bouncers. I would expect this in London not Hornchurch. Nowhere else does it. Is the Hogshead so bad?
realaleman - 3 Dec 2006 02:12
A place for the pre-Romford crowd to perfect their posing, this pub is usually frequented by people more interested in looking good than actually enjoying themselves. Some decent music at times but certainly not a drinkers choice.
Oskins - 29 Aug 2006 13:43
went in yesterday , the decor is certainly better than the old hogs , feels like being up london and the prices are on a par to london as well , like the pub now

reopened yet to indulge but will do and will post a review

A dirty place that does not have carpets, but has dirty wooden floors. There is nowhere to sit, and very few tables to put drinks on. When you are in this place it feels like you are in the middle of a disused shop. The air extraction also needs work, as I was in there for about 2 hours on Friday night, and I felt like I had smoked 10 packs of Bensons. It is full of Chavs, and it is full of knobs, and I did try Lloyds, and although not much better, I would rather go there because I can sit down, and it has a no smoking area.

best place to go in hornchurch by far. few chavs from lloyds but i think they're on their last legs. good food, good staff and good atmosphere of an evening. get the djs back!! oh yeah, stay away from lloyds!
anonymous - 19 Feb 2006 21:23
here here....i agree with comments below.

pub basically the same as lloyds...the customers flutter between the two.

sad cos Hornchurch was lovely yrs ago, these pubs are horrible...very intimidating and full of kids with attitude.

anonymous - 7 Feb 2006 14:59
was a ok pub till certain bar staff left , now gone down hill the staff are superb and do the best with the s**t provided , but in a nutshell full of attitudes n arseholes , try the fatlin
romfordir - 26 Jan 2006 17:24
ha ha gansters, more like what you expect in Hornchurch or Romford, theres no getting away from it, but the pub is great and you might want to try lloyds just to appreciate Hogs! its friendly, clean, great atmosphere and a great place to go. as for that incident with the bus, it was after england got knocked out of euro 2004 and lloyds and hogs joined together! and there has never been a stabbing! great place to start your friday or saturday or if your just after a nice drink!
anonymous - 18 Oct 2005 18:19
Probably the best "bar" in this part of east London, and that isn't saying much.
anonymous - 16 Oct 2005 20:07
Not really worth putting pen to paper about this place. Terrible, full of young kids and gangster wannabes with bad attitudes. It resembles the bar from Roadhouse.
realaleman - 29 Sep 2005 17:31
ok pub the bouncers have serious attitude problems tho.
anonymous - 26 Nov 2004 12:22
A terrible place to be. Everytime I go there the Police are around the pub. A few months ago customers were trying to tip over a double decker bus parked outside. The pub had a massive fight the other week, and two nights ago someone got stabbed outside. Stay away unless you are the local gangster.
patty - 19 Nov 2004 21:18
this pub has the best live dj ive ever heard every friday night
al - 29 Oct 2004 10:58
A stock standard Hogs Head. Nothing wrong with it. Cheap good food and drinks, clean and comfortable.
