Another old school classic pub with a variety of ales on. Worth a drop by while in Lincoln's tourist zone.

Lincoln's most storied pub but behind the Strugglers these days. Nonetheless very good and one of the best places in town to sample the enjoyable Bateman's range including Pilgrim Fathers which was fruit-scented indeed. The interior is uncomplicated and traditional and the location beneath the castle walls pleasant to a high degree.
BoehmBawerk - 30 May 2016 11:33
Lively boozer with character, decent pint, only fairly small. Careful barman doesn't overcharge you.
Richardhuddleston - 2 May 2016 22:11
I had no idea that you could get a good ham roll with a small side salad and a bowl of superb chips for just £4. Add a choice of 6 well-kept handpulls (Landlord, Batemans XB/Gold, White Horse's Champion the Wonder Horse, Maxim's MXM Triple Hop and one from Clarks) and a traditional bar with benches along the wall, part quarry tiled/part wooden floor and Victorian majolica fireplace and this is a must visit pub.
paul_d102 - 15 Nov 2015 21:04
Batemans beers served plus guests from the Bateman list. Beers well kept but strugglers is the slightly better of the 2.
Rocky53 - 1 Dec 2014 16:46
Good old pub, great beer and cider range, nicely set next to castle walls.
madcatlady - 15 Sep 2014 15:06
This Batemans pub, situated close to Lincoln castle is well worth the walk up from the centre if you are planning a crawl around the city.
Whilst if offers Batemans ales, it also provided a few guest beers, whilst the live band on our Saturday night visit made the atmosphere even better.
The locals were very friendly, and coupled with a visit to the superb Strugglers pub next door, you can't go wrong.

Live baby live
Now that the day is over
I got a new sensation
In perfect moments
Impossible to refuse

Sleep baby sleep
Now that the night is over
And the sun comes like a god
Into our room
All perfect light and promises

Gotta hold on you
A new sensation
A new sensation
Right now
Gonna take you over
A new sensation
A new sensation

Dream baby dream
Of all that's come and going
And you will find out
In the end
There really is
There really is no difference

Cry baby cry
When you've got to get it out
I'll be your shoulder
You can tell me all
Don't keep it in ya
Well that's the reason why I'm here

Are you ready for a new sensation
A new sensation
Right now
Gonna take you on a new sensation
A new sensation

Hate baby hate
When there's nothing left for you
You're only human
What can you do
It'll soon be over
Don't let your pain take over you

Love baby love
It's written all over your face
There's nothing better we could do
Than live forever
Well that's all we've got to do

Hey now I'm gonna take a new sensation

Friendly welcome to a pretty good pub. Bateman's in good nick and also had Landlord. A bit on the pricey side - pint of Bateman's and half of cider was 5.
martyngs - 23 Aug 2012 09:32
HOW MUCH? This is Lincoln, not London.
kitconway - 13 Aug 2012 20:05
The Victoria is a great pub in its own right. Whilst we didn't find it quite as good as the Strugglers around the corner, I would recommend combining visits to both. Inside there are two rooms, whilst outside there is a large covered area suitable for summer months. Batemans Summer Swallow & XB, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Caledonian Golden Son, Moorhouses Premier Bitter, Ossett Patriot Pale & Castle Rock Harvest Pale were the beers with Westons Country Perry & Old Rosie also available.
blue_scrumpy - 29 Jul 2012 18:50
Perfectly acceptable, but 17 for 5 pints is steep for anywhere outside London
filf - 6 Nov 2011 20:33
Called in yesterday for a quick pint. 3.8% gravity beer set me back 3.40, which is pretty prices. I remember their Union Gold (now Castle Rock Harvest Pale) being 1.50 a pint! It's still a cracking pub though not as busy as it once was, but then again I don't get in there much beyond 6pm. One of the best ale pubs in Lincoln with a great beer garden.
Mothbag - 12 Aug 2011 15:10
Made first visit for 10 years, when it had a legendary status that seems to have diminished in recent years, but seems a lovely place to enjoy very good pint of Batemans Swallow in the sun. I suspect the problem, if there is one, is just that there are far more pubs offering a wide range of beers like the Victoria now so it gets a bit overlooked. Comments, Lincoln CAMRA ?
mtaylor40 - 5 Aug 2011 21:13
Our second visit on Saturday evening 23 July 2011, the night the sun allowed a beer garden outing! Good beer selection as usual, Mauldons Midsummer Ale one of the beersm friendly bar staff worth a visit!!!
markh737 - 25 Jul 2011 01:57
Called in recently for a pint. Moved out of town a year ago, this used to be my local, but I still manage to visit quite frequently courtesy of the local village bus service! Cracking pub, always consistent. Great beer 7-8 beers all well kept. Quality beer garden under the castle walls. A regular in the Good Pub Guide and Good Beer Guide. Cannot argue with that!
Mothbag - 14 Mar 2011 15:34
Wonderful. High recommended. Decent (and good value) lunch menu too. Right by the castle.
dpaajones - 7 Feb 2011 17:49
Unfortunately didn't have time for more than one pint but very nice little pub with well kept beer and well served, will return on my next visit to Lincoln.
Nigethebeer - 25 Jul 2010 17:01
Agree with Sauron below about the barman - I know excatly who you mean! The pub itself is fantastic and one of my regular haunts. The staff here used to be fantastic in the old Tynemill days, but since moving to Batemans they've been a bit hit and miss, although still very good I have to say. The slightly dozy barman you mention always says the same thing to everyone who walks in. I don't think he's an ale fan he simply works there for the money. I have a chat with him, but try to avoid lengthy chats as he can be a bit downbeat. However, he pours one of the best pints so not all bad. He's ok, just needs to drop the I can't be bothered attitude!
Mothbag - 28 May 2010 14:29
Consistently good pub. Recent visit had a slightly dozy barman not enjoying his Saturday morning shift, but we've all been there.

Great chips.

Sauron - 25 Apr 2010 23:18
A Victorian brick-built local behind the castle and with plenty of car-parking nearby, including the Lawns opposite. Keeps a very good range of real ales, which are always of high quality. The interior is pleasant and a lot of outside drinking space too. The food is not especially imaginative but of fairly good quality, and not exorbitant. Has been the pub of choice for visitors to the Castle and Cathderal for a decade or more - to my mind the Victoria isn't quite as special as it once was, but is still very worthwhile.
Arctium_lappa - 7 Feb 2010 16:54
A bit of a shock - I was expecting Tynemills and got Batemans but the beer is still kept very well and the food seems to be of the same quality and choice. Another great Lincoln pub.
chick - 25 Dec 2009 10:29
Two roomed pub with a small snug to the left as you enter with a few settles and tables. Straight ahead is the main room which is long and narrow with the bar on the left. Theres a large outside drinking area directly under the walls of the castle. This used to be a Tynemill house, but is now owned by Batemans. They still sell the Castle Rock Harvest Pale though on one of their 10 handpumps over the 2 rooms. Other regular beers are Batemans XB and Timothy Taylor Landlord alongside a range of changing guests. Both pints I had were excellent, Ive been coming in here for years whenever Ive been in Lincoln and the beer has always been top notch. They also sell good value quality food, including hand cut chunky chips, none of your frozen chip rubbish here. The best pub at the top end of Lincoln.
ROBCamra - 4 Dec 2009 13:59
Just got back from a couple of nights in Lincoln. Stayed opposite this pub. 8 beers on - Taylor's Landlord, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Bateman's XB, 3 other Batemans' seasonals (names escape me) a Hopback and an Ironbridge brew.
All tried over 2 days and all were excellant - though the Castle Rock varied as some bar staff served it with sparkler, some without - my preference was with sparkler.
Best pub I came across in Lincoln.
bloomfieldjpm - 25 Aug 2009 10:22
Just 4 real ales on this Saturday, Batemans XB & Miss Australia, Landlord and Sharps Stogies. Good quality though and a huge beer garden.
oftenscore6 - 24 Aug 2009 11:45
This is my local in Lincoln. It is and always has been a fantastic pub, which justifies its regular main entry in the Good Pub Guide. Good real ale pubs in Lincoln are few and far between, but you could spend the whole night in here trying their range of regular and well kept guest beers (around 7 or 8 in total). Recent move from Tynemill to Batemans hasn't changed anything really, although they do have more Batemans beers on now, but this doesn't impact on the local guest beers. Good beer garden with views of the Castle walls. It's worth going out of your way to visit this pub!
Mothbag - 17 Apr 2009 14:02
We visited Lincoln for the first time in early June and this pub had the best range of small brewery beers out of all the Bailgate area. On the whole very disappointed with beers available in this part of the city as I come from a former 'beer desert' that now has 25+ available every night. Darlington!
markh737 - 25 Jul 2008 01:55
I must concur with 'brisk' on the Harvest Pale, its a fine pint, and my usual wet in the Vic on a Friday.
All the beers are very well kept and the food is good,
Recent changes are few and subtle but I do miss the old staff, although the new bods seem to be settling in well, I echo ritark by saying lets hope that the guest list isnt going to suffer to much from the Batemans take over!
The same regular faces seem to be sitting tight, thank goodness, and are always forthcoming with a smile or a nod, they, along with the beers make the place what it is. A great real ale city pub with character

EagleDude - 20 May 2008 18:05
Yep classic brick back street pub serving excellent ale. Small front room to the left, main long bar to the right. Don't think it has changed so much , still get other beers and the refreshing Castle Rock Harvest Pale. Nice and quiet to sup late on was open til one on a saturday.
brisk - 6 Feb 2008 12:50
On a par with anything in the area and there are far worse. Having said that my main concern would be the same as I have for The Strugglers. It has changed over the years and is a shadow of the place it was when it was called The Cross Keys...
Burtonroadborn - 16 Jan 2008 08:28
Possbly the best pub in Lincoln. Sadly now bought up by Batemans (as Ritark pointed out), though they haven't changed a lot of it and doubtless are scared too in case they put-off local custom - without this it'd basically be a normal backstreet pub with nothing to say for itself. There are still plenty of guest ales on tap, possibly the best selection in Lincoln.

jim_of_the_bob - 16 Oct 2007 18:02
Batemans Brewery have just bought this pub and will probably spoil it by reducing the previously excellent range of real ales by only selling their own. I hope not. Truly the best ale I have found in Lincolnshire. Small "back street" local, friendly staff, worth finding if you only go to a pub for the ale. Good food at lunch times.
ritark - 10 Mar 2007 16:25
Lovely little pub with the best selection of real ales in Lincoln. A little on the small side, but locals very welcoming and a nice atmosphere. Definitely the best pub I've visited since moving to Lincoln!
typedformiles - 27 Oct 2006 16:59
Very good pub. Excellent beer and first class food. Don't know about it being "not student friendly" but, let's be honest, that's a good point in its favour! Gives you a reason to walk up that hill!

Top notch staff coped well with hordes from the bloody Christmas Market. Very good for food and beer. My favourite in Lincoln.

Not student friendly!!!
anonymous - 13 Aug 2005 08:50
Truly superb boozer. Good beer and staff vertical.

stevewilliams - 29 Jun 2005 22:17
deservedly popular freehouse, very friendly, great ales.
moclips2002 - 6 Feb 2005 09:33
One of the best pubs in Lincoln , certainly in the top three. For such a small pub it can't be beaten for the choice of real ale.
history100 - 26 Dec 2004 10:49
Great beer but not a lot of seats, or space for that matter, its where the ol farts real ale lot converge with the crowding fetish of the 19 year olds in city centre pubs. Should never go bankrupt, give it a whir. See also Tap & Spile and Dog & Bone
TipTopTommy - 29 Jun 2004 23:56
It was probably the hottest day of 2003 when I climbed the hill in Lincoln. Luckily I found this place away from the touristy pubs with no soul next to the Cathedral.

Better to seek this than the Lincoln Imp.
palmwinedrinkard - 20 May 2004 15:51
a real, defining pub!top ale standards, more guest beverages(not just ale, ladies palates also catered for!!) than you shake a wobbly stick at,top "grub" great staff,no big screen etc. hoorah! good mixed crowd.my fave in the land, now in london :( . visit whenever poss.10/10
mark - 27 Mar 2004 12:01
Someones house converted into a pub, what a legend idea, and it still looks like a house not a pub. The bar runs through the walls so you can be sitting in the guys living room having a pint. TOP HORN!
Hannah - 27 Sep 2003 11:15
Pub located adjacent to the castle. Serves a wide range of fine ales, scrumpy and cider and is one of the finest pubs in the city. Food there is also excellent at a good price as well. I cannot recomend this pub enough
Bruce Shortland - 2 Sep 2003 16:34
Mecca for beer drinkers. I had my wedding reception upstairs; 9 gallons of Tim Taylor's Landlord went down that day. Sublime! Should be in the top 10 list of "Pubs that take pride in serving a superb pint".
Simon Hart - [email protected] - 19 Jun 2003 05:22
Without doubt the best beer drinkers pub in Lincoln. Friendly, atmospheric with good cheap food at lunchtime. Normally around 7 real ales on, the Landlord is superb.
Chris - 3 Dec 2002 14:50
Excellent selection of real ales well kept and at reasonable prices
E Backus - 21 Jul 2002 09:54
