user reviews of the Holly Bush, Alcester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Everards Beacon Hill was quite good yesterday. Reverend James was the guest with Everards Sunchaser & Old Original also on sale. Although there's plenty of separate rooms to sit in, most were empty yesterday early evening apart from what might be called the main bar (which would be a "snug" in most other pubs) and it seems as if the Holly Bush might be just limping along. I know own websites might be a little outmoded but I never like it when pubs just have FB pages (but I do like it when they have no TVs).

A top 10 pub in Warwickshire on this site.

I've been before and found it wonderful - great beer, great pub, great food.

Came on a Saturday at 13:25 and not single person in there - and that includes the staff.

Eventually someone came to serve us but as they are "between chefs" we didnt stay.

Strange that a pub so popular can be so sparsely visited.

Quiet and friendly with great beers. For me, the most enjoyable pub in alcester. A free pint for every 10 purchased!

If you are not an Everards fan then the beer choice is disappointing as it is limited to the house range. Nevertheless the beer is well kept even if the atmosphere is now sadly lacking.

I have to say that I have always been amazed that the pub retained its place in the GBG given the previous owner appeared to have lost interest in the place some time ago and the beer was of dubious quality for a long time. Serving huge numbers of real ale does not make the beer good, a fact that local CAMRA members who voted this pub in the guide would do well to remember.

Reopened yesterday and now managed by Everards.

Closed last month. A shame but HMRC sought a winding-up petition against Holbush Inns Ltd of which the pub owner was a director.

Obviously popular as often packed and always queue at bar. Great if want to be in company of lots of people and can put up with the noise and crush.

Busy on Tuesday 03/06/12 with really good selection of ales and a gathering of folk musicians filling the front room on the right as you enter, had to stand in the corridor to listen. Good night, good beer, good music, good pub.

A must when visiting Alcester. This 17th century (with later additions), Grade 2 listed pub has won numerous CAMRA awards and rightly so. Today there were Blindmans Funny Farm, Doom Bar, Black Sheep, the local Purity Gold, Wye Valley St George's, Hobsons Town Crier and Elgood Mustang available as well as the local Hogan's Cider. Members of the Alcester Court Leet were there following their attendance of the Annual Chapter of the L'Order of Chevalier Bretvins when the Low Bailiff was intranised (no idea what any of that means!) and the Town's official Ale Taster kindly offered me a sip of his beer to try (although they would do the same from the other side of the bar too). We sat in the bar area, drying off in front of the woodburner although there are numerous rooms to sit in. The clientele was largely middle-aged and respectable, the decor is well-kept, flagstoned floors, immaculate lavatories, all in all highly recommended.

Excellent multi-roomed pub, although it has been done up a bit since first visit, it has not been done too badly, a bit modern perhaps but still OK. Good range of beers on normally but on this occasion there was a beer festival on. What luck.

Good beer garden out the back and occasionally has music on in the back room.
On this occasion there were bands playing in every room as there was a folk festival in the town. Great night, even though a bit packed. Favorite pub in Alcester and quite high on the list for anywhere.

A nice little local pub full of characters. Got a few weird looks being "not from those parts" but we had a good time nonetheless. 8(!!) real ales on tap, this is one for real ale lovers...

Everything a good village pu should be, great food, great garden good staff, and of course great beer,

what's particularly good is that even though it obviously gets a good deal of it's trade from the roving sunday lunch brigade it has maintained the charm of a local pub. well worth a visit.

This is a grat pub to drink in and eat in. Loely choice of real ales, and in good condition too. The passageway down by the toilets has been done up since my last visit, and very nice too. Lovely rooms of character and superb garden. Great place tovisit.

I agree with the previous reviewers. I have been coming to this pub once a year in May for the last 5 years and have not been disapointed yet. It's a 120 mile round trip but to sit in the sun in the wonderful garden with a great pint and a fantastic meal is well worth it.

There's not many better pubs in the county - probably the whole country.

Eight real ales (yes, eight!), including the heavenly local Purity beers, Uley bitter and an ever changing line up of guests. There's a great pilsner for the lager lovers - Veltins. All beers are kept superbly. The staff are great and you can get good quality pork scratchings too!

After work, there's nothing better than sitting at the bottom of the beer garden and soaking up the sun!

10/10 - can't give it anything less

RogerB has summed up this wonderful pub perfectly. It is a treat to wander around the rooms and into the garden, I can confirm that the refurbishments are finished and all of the character has been kept.
The beer is always excellent with a wide choice. I have never managed to eat here, but it all seems hearty and well done.
A must visit for any beer lover.

In a town with pubs by the dozen, the Holly Bush outshines the lot. This is the sort of pub that needs to be explored rather than just sat in. A central corridor leads to 4 different rooms. First on the left is a carpeted front bar that is delightfully simplistic with built in pew seats and a welcoming fire. There are no TVs or games machines to distract one from conversation and the music from the other bar is barely audible. Without doubt, you will end up chatting to the locals. 2 rather interesting pictures London Bridge designs seem a bit out of place here but they make interesting viewing.

On the other side of the central bar (note the unusual central stack for storing bottles etc) is what appears to be the locals favourite gathering spot. The tongue & groove wood paneled room contains brasses, old pictures, a post horn and few more personal artifacts like cards and teddy bears.

Opposite on the other side of the corridor is another small room with old photos of town (including an aerial view), a newspaper rack and a couple of solid and sturdy tables. Tongue & groove wooden planking covers the upper part of the original wattle & daub wall (some of which is exposed behind a glass panel). Yet another room branches off at the rear, probably used more for dining but again, it is cosy and simplistic with just a couple of tables and a welcoming fireplace.

As for the beers, there were 7 Real Ales including a mild and they have been regular winners of the local CAMRA pub of the year (there seems to be an annual battle for this with Three Tuns down the road). The only downside was the absence of a real cider, something the barman was genuinely apologetic about.

During my stay in the area, the pub was undergoing refurbishment so I was unable to get into the remaining rooms or the garden but there was certainly enough here to more than warrant a return visit. I understand that they do regular folk evenings and have a beer festival a couple of times a year. Very highly recommended to anyone who likes a real and genuine, unpretentious pub. 8/10 11/12/06

This is one I always visit when in the area as there is always a good selection of real ales on. There are two separate areas being served from a central bar. There are interesting rooms in the pub, and the food is also good.
