Has been undergoing a big refurb with the pub shut, but last week the hoarding outside was advertising an opportunity for a bar, restaurant or pub... chances of it being a pub again?

Popped in last night for a quick afre work pint. the place was not busy, the bar staff were pleasant and the Cornish Knocker was in good nick (two other real ales available). Was able to sit undisturbed to read the paper.
Can't really understand earlier posters but it was a Monday and yes, the West End is known for it's criminal elemant (bag nickers). �3.60 a pint in keeping with the area.

I don't think that some of the less complimentary reviewers can be at the same pub. I am not local so not a regular, but whenever I am in the area I do like to go to this pub. It was most enjoyable when this year's Heineken Cup Final was on; with all the other sporting events there can't have been many better places in London to watch Ulster versus Leinster that day. The selection of beers, particularly Cornish Coasters, Doombar and Old Speckled Hen, is very good. The meals I have had there have all been very nice. The staff I have found to be very friendly. I highly recommend this pub.

WARNING: DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB. My two friends and I wandered into The Marquis of Granby on the off-chance that they might be showing the Man City Vs QPR match. There were 5 minutes until kick off and there was a plum table going spare right in a large area right front the screen. We settled down in our seats and moved the table literally about 10cm to the left to get a better view and to bring it in line with the chairs, which were a little further back. Out of nowhere this huge, lumbering, sweating, hulking bully of a Landlord flew across to our table, got hold of it and slammed it right up against the wall and roared "YOU DO NOT MOVE MY FURNITURE!" When we protested that the table had never been that far against the wall in the first place and any damage he feared we might have done had just been made worse by him throwing the table half way across the room, he got right up in my (female) friend's face and jaws clenched, bright red, shaking with rage, he screamed "YOU. DO. NOT. MOVE. MY. FURNITURE. DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND."
Hence to say we left immediately and did not spend any money here. I don't go to work to line the pockets of insecure little men with a fetish for furniture moving. He will be the ruin of this pub. Shame.

For starters, how can some Mick the Pick say the football is for regulars? This isnt Paddy Land mate, its England!
Second, why the hell are pubs in England showing matches with the Pope, Peodophile Preist loving mugs on the TV in the 1st place?

Warning: thieves operate here. I was with a friend the other evening when her bag was stolen from the table. What really shocked us though was the attitude of the landlord. He simply couldn't have cared less. He was rude and dismissive - a crime had been commited on his premises and all he wanted to do was move us along and close up.

landlord is too miserable to be in the hospitality business. i don't need that sort of attitude when i'm paying the best part of four quid a pint. i also don;t need him telling me i can;t watch a celtic game because it's "for regulars only" today. Serious attutude problem. Well run but go somewhere else for the football.

a gem of a pub in the heart of London,can cater for all, be it quiet solitary drink on a week day afternoon or the bustle of the evening with regulars rubbing shoulders with tourists and the theatre crowd,even when they"re showing the big celtic games on a sunday afternoon this pub always retains somehow the feel of a local.Big Ritchie the manager stands no nonsense runs a tight ship with his crew of competent bar staff,and for me the best guinness in London.

Agreed... some Tipp lad asked him to turn the match up as there was no sound. He pointed the remote at the screen and whilst staring at him menacingly the whole time, turned the volume from 0 to 100 (100 being the loudest). I did chuckle.
How's the Irish economy going? Can't be good... they're all in The Granby. 2 arrived fresh off the boat, suitcase in hand during the match. It's like the 70s all over again.

It's a bit shabby although with a few interesting opera posters on the walls. Nothing offensive in here at all (although there was a party of beardy IT nerds at the next table) but I'd head for the Cambridge if looking for a beer round here.

I like the position of this pub, nice place to watch the world go by. By world I mean ladies, by watch I mean dribble, by position I do actually mean position.

Popped in here for an hour last friday afternoon. Boiling hot day and no seats available in the main bar. An upstairs (large) area was open and overlooked the Palace Theatre. Interesting just watching people. Had the Sharps Cornish Coaster which was on top form. Worth another look.

best pub to watch SPL is you are a Celtic fan , bad news if you DONT support Man Utd. because despite being in central London it always favours the cockney red brigade downstairs , while the gunners or chelsea are stuck upstairs in a tiny tv room!! when celtic play you can hear the roar of the fans 400 yards away when they score. it also shows GAA football & hurling over the summer, so a great place for a pint on a sunday afternoon. not the best staff or decore but a step above other small pubs in the area

Went in this pub yesterday thinking it was on the Nicholson Dick Whitting ALE Trail. Well it was not (My mistake). Reasonable pint of London Pride but at �3 a pint is 50p dearer that Nicholsons for the same Beer. Better (and cheaper) pubs in the area.

Fine pub but no good if you are in a hurry. I've only managed to have a few pints here as it's usually heaving, no matter what time of day or night. More than once I've given up waiting at the bar to be served and gone elsewhere - my life isn't long enough to waste in bars without a drink!

Tried to go in here a couple of weeks ago with some friends.
There were six of us, mostly over 40 and they refused to serve us - and this is the nest bit - because there were SIX of us! 5 would have been OK - could understand it if group was younger or in football shirts. What a joke - no wonder the pub was empty. Apparently this is their policy,
Went to the pub other side of the road instead, who couldn't believe that they turned us away.

Great place to start the night off and do a spot of people watching, also a good gaff for a couple of cheeky after work shandies.
Staff are friendly, te beer is always good but only one toilet for the ladies, do tend to spend a bit of time in the evening queuing for the lav!

Grand old Soho pub and a good alternative to the Cambridge opposite.

Agree that this is a great place to spend a couple of hours watching the world go by. Great pint of Guinness, no nonsense landlord, reasonable food and a window out onto the passing mayhem that is Cambridge Circus.
Lots of sport screened here but they need to sort out the music. I hate the idea of foreign tourists taking a chance and visiting a "traditional pub" in London and coming out believing we all listen to the easy listening pop that too often frequents the speakers in this boozer.

No Jukebox in this boozer anymore since the refit, alas. PROBABLY the best pint of Kronie you're going to get in the area...the barman is a real character thoug. I've seen him faced with a group of stag-nighters and win!! Can get absolutely HEAVING on a Friday & Saturday night although the upstairs room has a bit more space, if no bar.

Just been refurbished and is rather nice. Good to people watch from. The landlord used to be at the Lyric (Windmill St) untill it closed last year. Its friendly, and shows all sporting events. Good pint.

My new favourite pub in London! Had a great time in there. Brilliant for watching the Footy. Excellent Staff and Landlord.

Not a fan of this place, I know the landlord from his Lyric days and can be a bit ignorant to the punters. Has a good few regulars and would have a lot more with a bit of manners and hospitality.

Saw the England v Trinidad match in here. Not much seating but my spot by the bar in front of the decent sized plasma TV enabled me to watch the match and get served easily (and very efficiently given the number of people inside). Rather standard beers (the usual suspects - Pride, Adnams, Bombardier etc) - prices about average for the area. Not changed much since the refurb - remains a rather straight forward and typical West End pub but the large picture windows enable you to get a good view of the (busy) world outside on the circus. The landlord is a character (I remember him from my occasional pint in the Lyric (now sadly demised). He may not serve you if you are carrying a copy of the Sun! A great night (eventually) due to the football but a bit more mundane on normal nights.

Nice new decor and decent beer. Richie always runs a tight ship unlike most West End pubs, society's dregs stay well clear.

Not a bad pub at all. Good for watching soccer on a Sat/ Sun but get there early as seating is limited.

Have been going to this pub for the last ten years. The standard of beer is not great; it's not cheap and the quality of staff has varied over the years, but it is worth the nipping in once in a while of an evening. Good jukebox. Obviously better than the standard AB1, P&P etc.

This is a great pub. I've been going to it since 1995. I'm usually in London 4-6 months a year on business and I'm at this pub more than any other. Good people, great location
It's not touristy. Its a great place.

Even with the jukebox blaring out you can hold a better conversation here than in the MuWater (Ch.X.Rd) on a Friday night. Bit cramped at times, but we like it.
