user reviews of the Hatchet Inn, Bristol

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It wasn't exactly riotous of a Wednesday lunchtime, but the staff were amiable enough, and the Butcombe's seemed OK.

The exterior publicity, given to the pub's claimed age related to nothing-in-particular once you were inside though.

You might well need your Beer Skates, before tackling the nearby multi-storey to return to your allotted driver's car though.

I hope that they don't still have a bouncer at any time. I don't go to pubs with bouncers.

So, I don't know, six-out-of-ten? What do you think?

This is meant to be 'the oldest pub in Bristol'. It's a major let down. The bar staff are friendly enough but extremely odd. The Doom Bar was top notch I must admit. The place just lacks any character, considering it's supposed age.

No real ale on my visit

was in there about t/time nothing on pump , so took bottled newquay , 2nd courage best back on pump , chatty friendly bar staff and customers , not a bad pub , getting more and more into music these days , so i kinda liked it .

I've only been in here on Friday and Saturday nights, Good mixture of people and pleasant atmosphere, beer is usually OK although not always available. I have found on a couple of occasions that some bouncers are much more forceful than is necessary with the reasonable customers this place has. Last time I was there (Sat 24/7/2010) the instant the bar was closed we were immediately herded out like cattle by a very aggressive bouncer.

No real ale last night when i popped in 4 a quick pint before seeing basshunter at the O2 Acadamy opposite*

*Yes i know, real ale drinker and dance music lover = strange combo

*3.65 a pint for sbow in O2 Acadamy, YIKES!!!

The place was quiet when visited hence the quick service last nite, music playing out was very heavy metal (i guess to keep the other basshunter kiddies out lol)

Anyway all in all a not bad pub just shame no ale, 6/10

The Hatchet attracts a wide range of people and and is welcoming to all. A popular venue for a pre-concert drink it can get very busy. The ales are mainstream and lagers standard fare but very respectable. Fairly large outside area with patio heaters and parasols (rain-stoppers!) is a bonus in the middle of town. Not everyone's cup of beer but worth a visit.

Probably one of the oldest pubs in Bristol, dating apparently from 1606, although it doesn't really lokk the part from the inside.
Tends to attract goths for some reason and plays what I imagine may be appropriate music. It sounded like Metallica or something similar at slightly too loud a volume for an easy conversation (maybe I'm just getting old!).
Only a couple of beers on tap, although the Butcombe was very good. Also Bulmers & Blackthorn cider.

Good music playing on juke box, service ok, beer and cider fine, mainly goths, and some punks clientele all ok. Some younger idiots were giving passers by lots of grief as they were smoking outside though which was a bit disappointing.

Friendly service and decent food, cider and beer at fair prices. Beer a bit boring (Butcombe and Courage Best) but tastes fine. A proper pub just off the centre of Bristol.

Probably the only pub in Bristol where you're always half expecting to bump into an Orc. Good cheap beer, hideous food, good atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights. Stays open late and doesn't charge you to get in. The bouncers have a bit of a reputation for being heavy-handed, although things seem to have improved. The private function room upstairs usually has interesting things happening during the weekends.

Popped in one gloomy Sunday afternoon during the winter. Almost entirely empty and bar staff seemed preoccupied with matters other than us. Food not especially inspiring and there was a general air of complacency. I suppose we were meant to find the notices of local legends about the pub dotted around the walls entertainment enough. Perhaps we will try again, but then again perhaps not.

Excellent pub for a well priced lunchtime drink and snack. Food was very good, quickly prepared and very reasonably priced.

Went in for a late drink at the weekend and found a good mix of people downstairs. Upstairs with the pool tables was a bit aggressive, but what do you expect from a pub in the town centre late at the weekend?

Living on Park Street this year, so this is my local (well, that and all the other bars on Park Street itself!) Gets VERY busy on Saturdays. As has already been said, a diverse crowd awaits, but are friendly and welcome newcomers! Serves a good pint of lager :o)

Looks can be deceptive. Olde Worlde from the outside, alternative punters inside , beer good, wasn't there long enough to see it in full swing, but recommended.

Very nice alternative rock pub

Really good pre club pub. Great place to people watch as the regulars are a strange bunch to say the least. Music is excellent on weekends and it's open til late :)

The main front door was, and still is underneath all the layers of paint, lined with Human Flesh from Ye Olde Days.

Probably best known for its rock nights on Friday and Saturday nights, when it opens until 1am. Early in the evening it's generally frequented by people going to a gig at Bristol Academy, but later it's generally the haunt of indie-kids, goths and rockers of all ages.

A wonderful old Elizabethian boozer, with a large rambling interior. Looks a little battered inside, but makes up for it with a great atmosphere. Has a late licence at weekends so can get rather crowded.
