The Albion isn't the Albion now, a great couple and their son and daughter in law have reopened the place as the Drayton Gate. Good cocktails, super service and great food

The worst of 10 pubs we tried in Shropshire on Saturday. That's not to say that this is a particularly bad pub. In fact, it's very handy for the station in Wem and the staff were friendly. The only beer on was Youngs Bitter. The other handpulls looked a little forlorn. The bar is reasonably large and there is a covered outdoor area for drinking. Ok, but nothing spectacular.

In here last Saturday and OK if waiting for a train.
Just outside the Station but still not open till 2 on Saturday.
Not many trains stop here to be fair.
3 Hand pulls 1 for Youngs Bitter and Doom bar turned round.

Pleasant enough barman and the beer was OK, but every pint he pulled had a head of froth an inch or more deep and they were not oversized glasses! Nobody said a word and there was no offer to top up. They must be raking in a small fortune! No food for 2 weeks at the moment , so moved on to the Old Post Office and The Castle - see comments for these.

Nice enough pub with friendly bar staff and the food was very good. 3 different real ales on and the two we sampled both from Salopian brewery were good and a bargain at only 2 a pint. Worth a pint or 5 if your in the area (we were camping just down the road)

Not a good idea to blow your own trumpet in business.? pam/mandy
The public at large will tell all.
The old addage "Quality always sells". in all aspects.

Pub now open again. Nice landladies, clearly trying hard to get the pub back on the map. Garden now nice, beers your usual standard pub ales, however nicely kept.

Nick the new landlord of The Albion seems to have got the balance right on the size of the meals and prices. i recently went in for a meal and was pleasantly suprised in the variation in menu which catered for all tastes. Also liked the idea of separate serving bowls of veg and homemade cut chips. The meals were served on hot plates and the barmaid was very polite , courtious and attentive.Cask beers of .Black sheep and Tetley's cask was well kept so too was the other standard beers.
Well worth a visit and glad to see the Albion re-opened. good luck in the future and keep up the good work Nick. See you soon

update to the last write up on the 2nd Oct last. I have since heard from my wemonian friend that yet again there is no beer and the present incumbants are leaving this week,
james55westhead - 6 Oct 2009 08:31
Having to make this review a proxy, one as i now live down south but, have it on good authority from a Wemonian, that this place is sinking, on 2/3 occasions now there has been no bitter to drink and, not many clientelle either. The New management team seem to prefer languishing upstairs, rather than try and make ago of it.Sounds like someone else parted with cash for the lease and,now the inevitable is due.

Pub recently re-opened, but need to give a bit of time as the new people seem a bit inexperienced. Should do quite well. People I spoke to weren't over impressed by the food, but were prepared to come back and try again.

As a regular over the past couple of years i think some of the comments on
this site are unfair. The staff do their best and are prompt and friendly
once you get to know them. Initial reception can be "frosty" but its not
always the case. The beer on sale is reliable and unlike some pubs in the
town they do clean their pipes now and again. The food is the usual run of
the mill pub grub thats filling and reasonably priced (they do put fruit
in the side salads which i feel is plain wrong). The drink prices are the
highest in the town but its one the better pubs in wem so you pay your
money and take your chances. At the end of the day its a decent pub in an alright town. I don't
know what some people on this website expect from a pub in Wem. Its a pub
in basically a large village, not the west end of london. Although you can
get a cheaper stella in the west end of london.

Well i was amazed to read the comments on this site. I use this Pub regularly as i work but not live locally. I find the staff to be helpful and pleased to serve. The food is good quality at affordable prices.

this is a newly renovated pub. really smart. great food here and quick service. really good touch screen jukebox, and quiz machine, and a quality pool table
snakehips - 8 Nov 2006 14:04
local pub that had been refurbished about a year ago.Typicaly done decor shop fitting company.small and quite noisy with a flat screen tv. pool table and the all too deafening music box.food is what i would call frozen portion controlled fayre.the usual selection of beers, dominated by the lager range.not my cup of tea.A good chance of restaurant/public house gone west
