Awful place with appalling service.

Visited on Mothers Day and told children more than welcome when booking. On arrival was told there was no highchair available as these has to booked beforehand (would have been nice to have been told this on the phone when making my booking!!). Then we were informed that despite it being Mothers day there was not childrens menu at all. My 2 year old and 5 year old would have to choose from the adult menu and just receive a smaller sized portion. However, there were no children friendly meals on offer. Deep fried Camembert, Prawn Cocktail or Pate for starters and Spicy fish with noodles, stuffed chicken on the bone etc for main!!!

No apology. no explanation as to why there couldn't be a childrens menu or offering on this family day. I would just add here that the food itself was terrible as well, so no saving grace there.

To top it all off I was then told to pay full adult price for the one child who ate, despite being told earlier that the childrens meal whould be the same as the adults just smaller!!

In summary avoid this place at all costs if you have children as it is by far rhe most un-child friendly place I have ever been to.

I've visited here on and off for many years but have never regarded it as a "proper" pub. A friend has recently reintroduced me to the place and he insists we come here because it sells Adnams Broadside. On a recent visit it also had Wells Bombardier and Green King IPA.
Now there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the beer. It's the right temperature, good choice and the pub is warm, friendly and spacious. But it just doesn't taste right! I tried the Bombardier and the Broadside and whilst it was full bodied it seemed to have a quality that made it quite hard to drink. I must admit I can't pin it down as the beer wasn't vinegary but both beers had the same underlying flavour. My friend loved it so it must be me - but I'm not so sure. I'd welcome any other comments on here - am I right?

Had the Christmas dinner here last year. Baked potatoes half cooked the size of cricket balls. Turkey sliced so thin and very dry. No gravy was presented with the dinner.
Cheese board for afters came with black berries as they had run out of apples and grapes. Hence we eat elsewhere this Christmas. Waitress was very friendly and apologetic.

We stayed here for a couple of nights.

It's a pretty nice pub- slightly upmarket food, some decent ale, and a nice atmosphere. Our room was very good for the price too.

The nice thing is despite the food bias it's still a pub, not just a restaurant.

Five of us went, having booked by telephone.
The Adnam's and Guinness were in good condition.
Upmarket grub, plenty of choices; very tasty and well presented. Generous servings too, so only one of us managed to find room for a third course.
Relaxed atmosphere, not a place to eat if you are in a rush.
We all liked the pub, the staff and the food.

Called in about 7.15 last evening, having rung earlier to see if they served food. The pub was almost deserted, and the bar unattended, apart from a barmaid who I eventually saw chatting into her phone - NO eye contact. I had a look at the menu - good choice, and the beer range - OK. After inspecting the Decor, menu etc several times more it eventually dawned on me I wouldn't get even a beer here - the place was effectively closed. After another ten minutes I left, for the long walk back to town. Fortunately there is an excellent Indian right in the centre of Rochford, I found. I won't be wasting another taxi fare on this place, however.

Very good food is served in this pub. Good base for a country walk.
