Was in Bridport for the night & looking for a decent pub within walking distance of the B&B I was staying in. Unfortunately a decent looking place (Ropemakers) was shut for refurbishment so I tried The Hope instead. A bit tired & grubby IMO, (not seen a refurb in 30+ years I shouldn't think), a few 'characters' at the bar, short on friendliness & atmosphere. I wouldn't go back.

Smart enough inside but beer is very over-priced when you bear in mind at my last visit, three of the four ales were vinegar. Landlady very miserable. Went in there after 10pm and it seemed to be full of 19 year olds squaring up for a fight. Could be a classic back street boozer - isn't.

Went in there with my wife and daughter last week, a bit grubby, my Trelawny was ok and the ladies enjoyed the selection of ciders but my daughter suggested it was a case of "Get orf of my land" At least the pub dog was friendly, moved swiftly on to the Tiger - normal service resumed.

I reviewed this pub three years ago and know that the management has changed at least once since then. I only popped in as I went to the nearby Waitrose, on entering I was immeadiately struck by the cleanliness, bthe ales were more or less the same and I tried a half of Trelawny( St.Austell) which was excellent. The service was polite the Pool Table which cluttered the left hand side bar was pushed further away into a new side room. The idiotic trolls that inhabit bite will say that i'm inconsistent but there has been a genuine major change here.

Used to be great when Val had it but the landlady looks like she's been given three weeks to live or perhaps she eats a lot of lemons. Beer was actually very good - Proper Job at 2.80 excellent. Full of cider smashed Jimmyboys though.

OK it's had a new lick of paint but the landlady never cracks a smile and it's always Courage Best, Dartmoor & Proper Job on the pumps - usually all 3 are vinegar. Someone put a team in her who care and are willing to work at making the pub what it was when Val had it!

This pub has a clearly false rating it is being artificially boosted. Dark forces are at work 7.5 my ars*!
slerpy - 31 Aug 2009 21:27
A tad on the dirty side the owners don't give a fcuk and the beer quality is p*ss poor.To get a mark of 7.5 their friends and relations are voting.

Not the best pub anywhere, but with regular useage, the booze is fine (especially cider) and many of the customers are interesting!

Will never be up to the standard when Val Crabb owned it. Owners a bit complacent now - seem to have forgotton that we owe them nothing! Beer is unimaginative and not very well kept. Boring old Courage.

Great pub now - Dave & Sue have done a good job in getting the old feeling back. Three nice ales usually on tap along with 3 real ciders. Some good bands Sat nights. Darts team are a great laugh!

Beers are always good when I go in and the food is quite adequate for a bar menu. Always a great crowd in and very friendly - my favourite pub in Bridport

On holiday two weeks ago I went to the Hope&anchor the beer was undrinkable the food was VERY POOR. Yes it is cleaner. Avoid.

Great pub just off the high street watched the footy there as it now has a big screen. Great atmosphere with a good mix of young and old. Very welcoming pub.

Changed hands in early 2006 and better than ever. Beer range might need a bit more thinking about (two S&N brews) plus a guest. Tastefully decorated. Friendly. Local boozer. Live music. Great!

Much improved pub just off the High Street good range of beers and ciders great place to spend the evening with the occasional bands playing

Lots of improvement since I visited last time with a great range of lagers and ales. The cellar is just behind the bar and the owner will often have a cask of something different going on. Good crowd in for the music shame theey don't have the footy on.

Very clean real ale and cider pub at the bottom of the High Street, beer in excellent condition and some unusual red cider on draught. Just been mentioned in the Good Pub Guide and aprt from the Witherspoons probably the best pubs to visit if you're a girlie - like what I am.
Beerlady - 27 Oct 2005 17:36
Great night out last Friday at this pub haven't been in for some time but its been smatened up and I counted SIX lagers on draught. Much improved and well worth a visit.

Pub's been done up since I was last here and it is even better than before. Friendly crowd in and great beer. Bridports best local as far as I'm concerned.

Pubs been done up and had new carpets since I last visited it. Even better range of beers and friendly atmosphere. Music still features. Always was my favourite pub in Bridport and still is!

Had a great night out here and the beer was in great condition, a lovely pint of Summer Solstice, very approriate.

Was always a good pub - good, sensibly priced ale. A superb night when there is music on. The clean up is welcome but the beer range never changes. That was one of the attractions of the pub before the change. There's a limit to how much Otter and Courage you can take...

Refurbished with a great atmosphere
