user reviews of the Jersey Lilly, Bristol

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Just moved to the area and have tried out a few of the local pubs. But one has stood out as the best and the Jersey Lily is top of my list. Popped in on a evening to be greeted by a very cheerful barman (or owner), and was the best welcome i had all day. Very proud of his ales and helpful with tasters, i had a Great pint of Adnams Southwold bitter 10/10. Nice atmosphere around the bar with the landlord chatting to everyone and making them laugh.
A PROPER PUB

Popped into this pub on Saturday night for a quick drink and rethink having walked the length of Whiteladies Road and been unable to find anywhere to eat ( everywhere we tried was fully booked). The new landlord was very friendly and the beer was good, three cask ales to choose from plus the usual array of lagers, three ales is ample in this size of pub. The kitchen in the Jersey Lily is only open at lunchtime so the landlord made a few phone calls for us but he also drew a blank. Solution - fish and chips from the award winning fish and chip shop opposite brought back to the pub with the landlords blessing, he even provided plates and cutlery! This is a lovely little pub 5 minutes from The Downs, this new landlord should do well in this establishment, I recommend you try it.

Only two beers on when I walked in on saturday afternoon , tribute, and theakstons lightfoot, reasonably priced at 3 a pint, but I have to say the quality of the Beer was poor.
No atmosphere at all in this pub.
As I await my PM, not worth a second visit based on this performance.

loving the banter between mousefan & jellytot...
tending to side with mousefan though.
Good luck to the next tenant, the old/existing one evidently had a struggle.

Hello Jellytot76, my one-posting friend!
1. The For Sale sign wasn't up when I visited, although I've seen it since.
2. Agree Sky expensive, but it does get the punters in. Hopefully it'll be back.
3. Agree better than Wetherspoons. Most things are.
4. The street market closes at 2.00 pm. (I should know, I work on it) I was in at about 12.30 pm. Agree some of the customers are of the knit-your-own-muesli variety but plenty of them are normal and might fancy a lunchtime pint.
In conclusion (please note the spelling), I always saw this site as somewhere where we could just leave our own impressions of pubs we use. I didn't think it was necessary to go in with a questionnaire and clipboard and interrogate the staff. I hope this pub does well under the new management and will carry on using it when in the area.

in response to mousefan april 5th, always remember there are 2 sides to every story and facts should be reported accurately to avoid undue hassle and bad press for anyone in the trade! So facts 1: the pub is not in trouble, the pub is up for sale, as the large sign above the door clearly states, and the current management are dealing with issues from long ago, and as the regulars will testify, are doing a good job. 2: Sky t.v costs a lot for a pub, the jersey lily in particular cost around 800 per month, and as stated before, the pub is up for sale and the current management are not able to sign the 18 month contract sky would like them to. 3: the fact that the barmaid changed your drink with no hassle is surely a good thing, try and get hassle free service at a wetherspoons, i rest my case. 4: the street market you refer to would be the one that closes at 1pm and did you see the people who were shopping there, not the lunch time drinking kind me thinks!!! and as a regular in the pub i would invite you to turn up at 4pm when the pub is very busy through the evening.

in conclucion, people should always find out facts before posting anything, it stops undue problems to the landlord, and stops the person writing the comment looking like an idiot. yours sincerely jellytot xxx

Is beginning to look a bit run down ,
A shadow of what it was a couple of years ago , a choice of 3 beers , the quality of my adnams was below par , the place was very unatmospheric ,and frankly I couldn't muster enough courage to have another one.

Last time I was in, there were a few small signs that this place might be in trouble. Big plasma but no Sky (on Cricket World Cup Final day). Daily papers cancelled. Barmaid struggled to pull pint I ordered, checked barrel and said it was half full but when she finally managed to produce a full pint which wasn't half froth, it was off. She changed it with no bother but I got the impression they're not getting the throughput. Finally, only three punters in on a Saturday lunchtime with a busy street market just down the way.

From what I've heard, just changed hands, might explain stock issues from recent reviews.

Was a fair pint at a fair price with a friendly barmaid.

An all round fairly decent boozer.

Payed the Jersey Lily a visit about 2 weeks ago and there were 2 ciders, 4 ales & a lager sold out. This was on a Tuesday. Went in again last night (Thursday) and all the same beers were again "sold out" and I was informed that the delivery was Friday. Fair enough, I thought, but how the f**k does a quiet pub like this possibly sell so much from the start of the week that it has run out by Thursday (or even Tuesday on the previous occasion). I read all these comments about how this pub is great and the huge selection of beers available. WHERE? Very badly run pub. VERY bad. S**T!!
Sort it out!!

Pleasant enough pub situated towards the top of Blackboy Hill. Theres a couple of tables out the front if you want some fresh air, but theres not much of a view other then the traffic and the airs probably not that fresh. A rustic sort of interior with stripped wooden flooring and some comfy sofas out the back.

Theres a reasonable looking pub grub menu, divided in to sections such as Toms Pies, Mix & Mash, Build your own, etc. A large pile of games in the corner and a plasma on the wall, although this wasnt on when we visited. All in all a welcome respite from the more frantic bars further down the strip.

They appear to have a bit of a problem with their stock, as three of the cask ales were off and three of the other drinks as well. Beers that were on were Doom Bar, Butcombe and Spitfire. According to the menu, they also do Bombadier, London Pride and Caledonian 80. There were four ciders on tap, but unfortunately they were all very similar, and not even the best of that particular genre Blackthorn, Scrumpy Jack, Symonds Founders Reserve and Bulmers Original.

Visited here today for 2 or 3 for the first time in a while , comfortable inside , beer reasonably priced , and quality quite good , theakstons black bull bitter , the only unusual one , not a bristol great yet ,but you could do a lot worse , especially in an area which if not neglected has been overlooked by a lot of bristol drinkers , ie over the road you have the port call , coach and horses , the red lion , beaufort etc etc all within a minute of each other plus this one .

A pub which is far nicer on the inside than it appears from the outside. Sofas up the back for those that want them, one peculiarity is the location of the TV - only watchable from at/behind the bar. Perhaps that's why quiz prize is "One minute behind the bar(!)"

Today; Ruddles County, Spitfire, London Pride, Butcombe and Doom Bar. Average price for the area. Could have done without the irritating local radio in the background. Friendly staff.

Just had sunday lunch here and found it to be fantastic, great food and ales, spoke to the landlord and staff who were friendly and polite and could crack a joke or two, have found that the ale list has gone from three to six in the last 18 months and that they are looking for another pub. This pub has the Cask Marque for the usual reasons but i found the beer to be exceptional and was even asked if i wanted my pint topping up if i wanted to which I declined as i found the head to my pint of Yorkshire Terrier (guest ale) to be more than acceptable. like beatles38 says woth a repeat visit!

Went in this pub on the Thursday before Good Friday and the atmosphere was non-existent. Got a nice 'hello' from the girl behind the bar but upon leaving no-one said anything, even the landlord who was sitting at the bar.
Some background music wouldn't go amiss here and a cheerful farewell bid.
pmeister - 10 Apr 2009 18:08
Beer was pretty good, but what a shame its gone over to a lounge theme bar. No longer the pub it was. Plus they didn't have a list of local cabs when I asked - initially suggested I hail one from outside. Not a community pub then, and for me characterless.
alewagon - 30 Nov 2008 17:31
A great pub with some great ales on ..... great to see the cask marque here and some traditional values... CAMRA should look at this pub as a great venue for ales ... keep up the good work!
star__69 - 4 Sep 2008 12:15
Pointless, characterless refit has robbed all character from this pub. For some reason, the new owners of The Blackboy nearby have been to visit, clearly loved the decor and have ruined that pub in similar fashion. Fashion will move on.
curioushistory - 31 May 2008 13:06
Landlord has moved to the Vittoria further down Whiteladies. Was good but has been utterly ruined when they "did it up". It is no longer an honest boozer and there are many better "city bar" type places down the road.
jake1 - 1 Jun 2007 12:18
Used to be awesome when it was run by the previous landlord. Inches Stonehouse on tap, a knavish landlord and a lax attitude to chucking-out time combined to make it one of the best on Whiteladies Road. Sadly, the brewery decided to tart it up into a souless, Chav-looking bar - presumably to be more in keeping with the rest of the overpriced, pink shirt-filled dross along the rest of the road. To be fair, it has improved since it reopened and they do run a Steak night on a Thursday (2.99). The final turd in the casserole is their total non-smoking policy though. Come on - it's not July yet!
