I found this a great little pub. No frills, no poncy food. Well kept beer and a rare bagatelle table - an old game, like a cross between bar billiards and snooker . Clientele all seemed to be local.
I go there whenever I stay in Chester. It is set in a lovely, slightly gentrified part of town, very near a canal.
If you want a good old fashioned pub, give it a try.

Yes, it's a dirty back street pub full of fatty's,benefit scrounger and wannabee hard man..ahah...yer right....they spit all over the place out side...Just take a walk passed and look in the door, then walk on to some thing much better. Itd full of retards and druggy and you see them all out side.

Its full of retards and bar fly's...Hope to see it closed down soon , if i had my way. There is better pub's in Chester, than this s**t hole....Just take a look at it.!!

Backstreet corner pub not far from the train station. Much more of a traditional boozer than the nearby Mill Hotel, it's also more a locals pub. The main bar area was fairly busy during our visit and is a place for conversation. Tables in the room to the back are more for people who are looking for a quiet point or a separate conversation. The bagatelle table looked interesting. It's the first one I've seen on my travels. It's larger than a bar billiards table. But there were no instructions. So we didn't risk a game. No doubt the locals would have given us an idea as to how to play. But sometimes you don't want to be the centre of attention! Beer range is not as good as the Mill (Everards Tiger, Shepherd Neame Spitfire and one other - possibly Caledonian Deuchars IPA). But this is a really friendly place and one of a dieing breed of decent backstreet pubs.

I wasn't aware of this pub until it earned an entry in the 2009 Good Beer Guide, so I had to go and try it. It's a back street locals pub with a couple of guest beers on. The pint I had was in very good nick. It was a Saturday lunchtime and a whole bunch of locals were playing the unusual bagatelle game and enjoying a whole load of banter as well. A proper local, I'll call back again.

Traditional pub in the back streets inbetween the Shropshire Union Canal and the railway station. Friendly locals helped us get the hang of the bagatelle table, which took a while when you're more used to bar billiards. Decent beer too. Recommended, especially if you've a while to wait for a train.

The Union Vaults offers the nearest drinkable real ale to the station, and, a stone's throw from the Mill, underlines that there are other sources of a good pint in Chester. I sometimes feel it has a slight Care-in-the-Community air about it, but it's well worth a visit.

Nice little back street pub, seems to attract mainly locals. If i remember correct 2 or 3 hand pulls.
Split level pub. Friendly atmosphere. Handy for the station. Worth a look if your passing after The mill hotel.
