Was intending to go in last week but closing at 2.30 p.m. When I did go the following evening the London Pride was undrinkable. May be a one off but I can only comment on what I found.

In reply to you, Queenslander, the Marine has been run by the same people for over 20 years. It always serves good beer and food, but the prices are not the cheapest. A reliable pub at all times.

When I first visited Eastbourne in 2009 this pub was the nearest to my hotel & so became a default local. I have popped in on 3 subsequent visits & can say, hand on heart, that it looks the same to me as on the first time. A blip in the space time continuum? I'm sure its been the same lady & gentlemen behind the bar, & the dignified bar flies have not changed seats. A tad more expensive than most pubs in Eastbourne, my pint of Pride costing 3.80, but that's a small price to pay for the reassurance that some things never change.

Very expensive to eat in here. I had a prawn and mayo salad at �10.45 with not much prawns.
The beer was ok.
Staff wasn't that cheerfull.

Superb pub serving excellently-kept Harvey's Sussex Best on my first-time visit - yesterday. Great surrounding and friendly service. The food smelled fantastic! Well worth a visit. Just a shame I live 250 miles away from The Marine! 10/10.

Does this place really exist? I walked up and down Seaside today and couldn't find it. We ended up in the Buccaneer.

went to eastbourne for week end 23 sept 2011. this was best pub we found by far good service good beer friendly staff

I went to this pub today at about midday b ecause I had read on this site that it didn't have music. It does so I won't be going back.

Colourful exterior makes the pub stand out from the rest of the street. A bit dark red interior. Had the Harveys which was nice enough. Front area is lower bar area raised and rear dining area and garden goes back down again. Closes at 2:30 on a Saturday.

I agree with the previous reviewer. To my mind, The Marine shines like a beacon of hope in the middle of Dumpsville! There are some terrible pubs nearby, but this place is consistently high on cleanliness, standards and service. The food can be a little pricey, but i have never had a bad meal there yet, and it's worth it for the wonderful warmth and ambience in the place. There are no tricks here. No TV, jukebox, pool table, music, quizzes or entertainment of any kind, and yet it is ALWAYS busy. That's the mark of a damn good, well-run local pub. Although their Christmas decorations have to be SEEN to be believed!!!!!

Well I'm shocked! following reading a previous review I am sure I've been to a different Pub!
The Marine Pub I have visited over the past 4 years is a friendly, welcoming child friendly accommodating establisment, with an excellent and extensive array of drinks to suit every taste. The extensive wine list and choice of spirits is so rare and refressing to find that we keep returning to be tantalised by the wonderful landlord and lady.
Our two year old daughter could not be more welcome, except maybe by her 83 year old grandmother, what a rarety to find an establisment to be so diverse! oh and please pop in over the festive period for a really rare treat.

The comments below speak volumes about the substance of management of this establishment. To attack other local businessess in the area, due to this pubs own short commings, is unprofessional. It is quite obvious that many of the commenters here are from outside the area and not connected with the pub trade. It IS overpriced please read all comments here, carefully sifting out those connected to management/area management which stand out a mile. It is arrogant in the extreme to assume that customers who drink lager cannot tell the difference between different brands. I assume when "proper pint of beer" is referred to, real ale is meant. That being the case I agree it should be tried but not in this establishment; please see my comment regarding the alleged Harveys. As to the comment "Get real" I say "get some manners" thus this pub may attract some more customers. Those of us who manage to grab the odd weekend away in Eastbourne, where there are some great pubs and restaurants, try to minimise bad experiences like this. Hence this site and others like it. Unprofessional, overpriced, poor quality drinks, arrogant and unfriendly service best describe our visit here. For these reasons my verdict remains unaltered ; If you are away for the weekend and enjoyment time is of the essence, then, this establishment is best avoided.

What a super pub! Good wholesome food, friendly staff and landlord, plenty of atmosphere and most importantly a great pint!

The last few comments must have been written by the owners of The Crown, The Windsor, The Vic, or any of the other sub-standard and empty placed that surround this great pub! Overpriced? Large glass of high-quality wine �4.20. How is that overpriced? No regulars? Not at 2.30pm perhaps, but come 7.00-10.00pm most evenings there is a very healthy regular crowd. Lousy lager? They all taste the same - how do you know? Have a proper pint of beer. Food over-priced? Maybe more than the burger-n-chips-in-a-basket that you get elswhere, but you pay for quality and freshness. Get real!

The most unpleasant, unfriendly service. Price: two beers and a coke �10.00. The alleged Harveys was the worst pint I have tasted in ages. Smart mouthed woman behind the bar some what tipsy on large glasses of wine! Avoid.

Expensive and unfriendly. Most people seem to go for the menu which is apparently good but very pricey. Indifferent staff and over �7 for 2 pints of lager which wasn't of high quality. Won't return.

We went into this pub on the 16th October 2010, looked good from the outside, not too bad inside, it closes at 2.30pm and opens up again at 6pm which isn't a bad thing, as pubs are not what they used to be. we bought a pint of kronenbourg and another lager and it came to �7.00 which I thought was disgusting, we went to sit outside as we are smokers, nice garden area but when we tasted the beer it was lousy, The Carlsburg had more taste to it than the Kronenbourg, because the kronenbourg tasted watery with no taste, there wasn't very many people in the pub, but the landlord was reasonably friendly as I made a joke about the steps. I think this is a really overpriced pub, trying to make a living in the times it opens.

Great old school pub. Like pubs used to be 20, 30 years ago (that's a compliment). Always look forward to going there especially at Christmas. Good selection of wine by the glass, ales also good. Food won't win any prizes but more than edible & plenty of it. Lots of seating & cosy booths. Friendly bar staff & landlord. Customers civilised also. Closes in the afternoon - just like pubs used to. Nice!

This is one of the nicer pubs in town but at the same time you pay for it. Both food and drink are overpriced with the result that they doesn't seem to be a "regular" crowd. Can be unfriendly.

Visited at 2:15 on Saturday 31st Oct. They close at 2:30. A good sized pub with 3 real ales on. It looked like it was mainly an evening foodies place. The beer was not at its best. My buddy had his Abbott changed but even the second one wasn't up to snuff either and he left over half of it. My London Pride seemed a bit past its best but was drinkable. The staff were very friendly but that might be because we were the only customers in the place. All told, I'm quite glad it closed at 2:30, there are far better pubs not too far away.

Visited here on 26/09/2009, obviously very popular as at 8 O'clock on a Saturday evening lucky to get a table. Landlord friendly and helpful.
Nice atmosphere however pint of Kronenburg larger at �3.40 not exactly cheap!
I ordered the mixed grill, which was very nice, wife had the chicken breast in garlic, but was very disappointed to find it was re-formed chicken and not an actual chicken breast, for the price felt a little cheated!

Fantastic and proper pub, well run by an excellent team. The best selection of brands that I have ever seen in a local pub,can recommend cocktails and the chilli vodka. The food is superb and the pub is spotless.

By far and away the best pub in Eastbourne. Friendly staff/management, excellent and plentiful food. A full range of ales and lagers. The wine list is phenomenal, and caters for all tastes and pockets. Phil (the landlord) is both passionate and knowledgable about his wares - wines, beers, and especially whiskies & brandies. So much so that he will occasionally let you try a little first before you buy. Smokers are well catered-for. The best thing, though, is that no idiots are encouraged or allowed. Although the clientele is very varied in both age and background, there are no pool-tables, dart-boards, juke-boxes, or even TVs to destroy the convivial atmosphere. Like I said, the best pub in Eastbourne, and well worth a look for tourists and locals alike.

This is a great pub run by a very good landlord and staff.
We where staying in this town for a short break and found this to be a very nice pub with fantastic food.
Great beer and a smoking area.

Narrow-fronted pub, with a long, thin bar squeezed in between a few side tables supplementing those in the slightly wider area at the front and restaurant at the back. A friendly atmosphere, and a very respectable pint of Harveys Best.

I popped in here a couple of times over the Christmas period and I have to mention the decorations. The whole of the interior disappeared and was replaced with fairy lights, baubles and tinsel. The kids loved it, but after a few pints of Abbot I became quite disorientated! Apparently they have been doing it for a number of years and it has become a tradition that the local press have now picked up on. It�s just a shame that the pub was only open from 12 until 2 on Christmas Day and not at all on Boxing Day.

Possibly at the moment has the worst christmas decor i have seen in my life but still a decent boozer friendly atmosphere.

I agree with most of the comments on here that this is a very good pub with a friendly landlord and even friendlier barman. It�s a big pub with a hotel feel at the front, pub feel in the smaller centre and a conservatory used as a dining area at the back. The front of the pub is on the main road (Seaside) and the rear paved seating area leads to a backstreet full of B&Bs.
3 real ales were available and some bog standard lagers, but there was an extensive selection of spirits and cocktails. I felt that the food was more about quantity than quality, but this is a pub not a restaurant.
Next time I�m in Eastbourne I�ll definitely revisit here although I should mention that the pub is closed from 14.30 until 18:00 everyday except Sunday.

Impressive bar presentation leads to conservatory-like area, then paved beer garden. Harveys was fine, lots of specials on individual blackboard plaques which sounded good but not cheap (eg half shoulder of lamb �13.95).
Imagine it has a good mix of locals & visitors.

This is a lovely pub with good beer and a (surprisingly) nice selection of wine. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive and there is plenty of local colour to amuse... The food was quite expensive, but well presented and very tasty. Not a gastro pub, a traditional pub grub sort of place with enormous portions (loose fitting clothing recommended).

Expensive in all areas but worth every penny in order to be where the idiots aren't. A geat familly business, successful because the attention to detail is always spot on. Well dobe Phik and familly.

Nice cosy pub, old fashioned looking with huge-looking food portions. I've not eaten there yet, just drooled over someone else's lunch. A nice stop off on the way to Mullens.

what a find! excellent atmosphere, lots of families (we went on a sunday afternoon), the Harveys was very good (I think they had London Pride on as well), food looked good although we didn't eat, open fire, comfy chairs. definitely worth a visit.
