user reviews of the Rummer, Bristol

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As others have said, it's basically a hotel bar with an impressive choice of spirits admittedly but (in an attempt to relive a Peruvian holiday) I ordered a Pisco Sour which they made with part Poire William when they didn't have enough Pisco. Politely refusing their offering, I opted for a rum-based cocktail instead (which I probably should have selected at the start). As a destination for a beer-based evening, this venue is a non-starter (and Bristol must be poorly off for cocktail bars if this is the best) but at least it afforded the opportunity to try somewhere different.

Stunning cocktail bar, possibly the best in Bristol, though probably not classified as a pub in the strictest sense.
The beers are all bottled, but the list is both thoughtful and a little eclectic. The huge open fireplace and nice clientèle make for a relaxed and warm atmosphere.
They run a full restaurant in the ancient cellars, and the food really in excellent, though possibly a little pricey. Think more experimental than good old pub grub.

I can only really echo what other have said. It's debateable whether this should be classed as a pub or not since there is not a single hand pump on the bar, but it's listed on this site so I might as well leave a review.
For starters it's a massive improvment on the old Rummer, even if it has lost some of it's character in the process. For a start it doesn't smell of sick and you don't stick to the carpet. In fact there isn't a carpet to stick to, they've put some rather smart slate tiles in. A previous poster's description of it being like a Madrid hotel is probably not far off. They obviously major on shorts rather than beer, and even when requesting a simple G&T the barman was keen to show off his cocktails skills, chucking around the bottle opener, catching the top from the bottle with his heel, etc.
The drinks list runs to around 20 gins, and 50 whiskies. Unfortunately not such a good choice on the beer/cider/lager front, although there were probably around a dozen. A couple of beers from Wickwar, and both of the ciders from Dunkertons (and both 7%!).
A bit pricey at 8+ for a cider and a G&T, but I guess it's that sort of place. Worth popping in if you're nearby and want to see what it's like, especially if you knew the old Rummer, but I don't think it's going to be a destination venue for many of the regulars on this site.

Excellent selection of rums. Huge fireplace, tiny fire. Very expensive, and pretty uptight. Probably would not go again.

More like the bar of a slightly upmarket Madrid Hotel.

Not really a pub, but excellent place for a drink.

Proper cocktails properly made, cold wheat beer, intelligent staff.

After normal weekend pub closing time, they politely decline to let any louts in.

Excellent choice to butter up the spouse, or anyone else for that matter.

Really nice place, weirdly doesn't get too busy when all the bars on Corn Street are rammed. Nice layout, nice atmosphere, very clean and tidy. Great Nigerian Guiness. Worth it if you fancy a pre-dinner drink or a late-night rum. Lots of rum.

Fantastic building and a huge menu just of drinks. No ale on tap but a great selection of bottled regional beers (if not slightly pricey @ 3.50 a time) 8/10
