Terrific pub. Very civilised. Great euro easy listening playing last night. Beer, while decent, was not quite as good as you might hope for. But that is partly due to Londoners being spoilt so much these days. Food was good, I had a bar snack of sliced ox heart and it was a revelation - why do we not eat it more often? Friendly staff and customers, top place all round.

Poor beer selection

Unexpected gem of a pub, found as I took a circuitous route home to London Bridge. Lots of tables outside for the sunshine - and even some council benches for when those run out. Like this place a lot.

Great pub. Well run. Two brothers, good friendly managers. Nice friendly bar staff(mostly ladies)................Great Beer Wadsworth 6x. Great guniness. Good Jukebox. Great ambience. A proper pub.

Came here with my gf, and a friend each, for the quiz, dinner and some drinkies. Hammering down with rain, barstaff offered cashback instead of trekking to the cash point; helpful and fairly knowledgeable about the beers (meantime!).

Superb food (risotto only got cold because I waited for a staggered order to be delivered, still tasted pretty good for high end pub grub - not low end gastro...) and well served booze. Quizmaster was good, if a little too pleased with the sound of his own voice. Half decent bottle of plonk for second prize, but winning the rollover cash pot was a real bonus ;)

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Found shelter at the Roebuck after a near death experience at a nearby establishment (for details of which see my review on the crown, on blackfriars road). Found solace well into a near ruined evening. Bright and spacious. Pleasant enough bar man apparently genuinely happy to be there and a decent selection featuring Meantime which I get the impression rotates often. One or two heavy drinking but amiable regulars and a handful of smiley local pretty girls.

Came in on Saturday night after attempts to secure a table at the Royal Oak to eat failed. Decent menu here and I enjoyed my pie. Friendly place and good selection of beers (Greenwich, Purity, Sambrooks) so worth a visit if you're in the area.

Came here my first day in London - although it took a little while to get served the atmosphere was nice enough afterwards. Would go again.

A decent pub and one of the better ones in the Elephant & Castle but certainly not the best as another review suggests. The staff are friendly and a decent selection of beers. I used to go there about 5 years ago when I was a student and having visited again recently it's gone a little down hill from the vibrant place it once was. Great sunday roasts still though!
adamsh0re - 29 Jun 2010 20:07
Easily the best pub in the Elephant & Castle area (not that there's much competition). A revolving range of ales tends to focus on a selection from the Meantime and Purity breweries, and they are usually well kept and the bar staff fairly knowledgable. Relatively unusually has also had Austrian lager Stiegel on draught for some time now. The layout is spacious, bright and modern, and during the summer there is ample outdoor seating. Food is standard pub fare and reasonably priced. Stays open 1/2-ish I think at the weekend and attracts a nice mix of locals and late night revellers. Covers the bases for a modern pub with art for sale on the walls, boardgames to play and a weekly list of quiz nights/poetry/open mic and the like. Overall, a superior local.

Had a lovely time this afternoon at the Roebuck. We had a roast, mine was a juicy roast chicken with all the trimmings and my wife had the nut roast, which was delicious too.

The staff were very nice and attentive and they sold us an amazing chocolate orange cheesecake DELICIOUS!

A very relaxing Sunday indeed

We will definately be back

P.S. Great pint of Purity Ale too

Havn't been here for a few years, but it's still as good if not better than i remember. A few of us came for the quiz night, we didn't win (came last), but it was very entertaining and we had a laugh. We ate drank more than enough and the staff were friendly and approachable. I'll return again and with a bit of luck and a better team, win the quiz!

Nice pub for a drink, but we had the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had. The meat looked like it had been fried, the veg looked like it had been in the oven (dried out and raw in the middle), frozen yorkshires and watery gravy. The meal came with a hair in it and when we asked for it to be replaced there was not even an apology. I have never complained before but this was truly awful. Please don't go there to eat - stick to the apparently great quiz nights.

A lovely local. Beer ok, food ok, but people fab and quiz was great apart from the time we woz robbed at the final whistle - prob by smug poster below but atmosphere too good to hold grudges. Best quizmaster is Michael by far. Big shout out to him!

I am struggling to find a better burger in London than The Roebuck's. Great pub with good food, music and people and a very comfortable cosy environment. I will go back again...and again.

Been going here for years - a fab little local. Good atmosphere, great music, friendly staff. Hadn't eaten there for a while and then last week popped in on a cold rainy evening and couldn't resist the specials menu. Well cooked, full of flavour, good ol' winter warmers - and really good value for money. Highly recommended.

I work at Guy's and this is probably my favourite post-work pub in the area, it's really rather nice. The pub quiz night is fun and as the only group of non students we win every week (the general knowledge of many scientists is appalling), so it'd be nice to have some competition!

A great looking pub from the outside, although a bit tired on the inside. Still, a comfortable place with a friendly vibe. Sometimes gets overun with the students from the Kings College housing across the street, but for the most part the more annoying youngsters head down the street to the Dover Castle and its student discounts. Laid back on a weeknight or during the day, but can get very crowded on a Fri or Sat night.

First started going there a few years ago when the food was excellent. They changed chefs a while ago and the food went downhill, but they seem to be back on track lately. The roasts in particular are very good.

Beer selection is just ok. Bottled beer is consistently served too warm but give them credit for serving Meantime.

All in all a very good pub - definitely worth a vist if in the area and maybe even worth going slightly out of your way for.

Friends and I had fun at the quiz night last Wednesday. Friendly staff, funny quizmaster and a nice atmosphere. I ordered a burger which was very good and friends shared a pizza. Not sure about the artwork but will definitely go again to eat and drink.

Notice the last review was 9 months ago.....either the management has changed or we experienced a bad day......VERY bad day.....

Visited this pub a few weeks ago - 6 of us for Sunday lunch. half the lunches were served 45 minutes before the others ( somehow a party of 12's order had made its way in between our two orders being placed, although we placed our 2 orders within 3 minutes of each other). Spent the 2 hours there chasing our meal, being fobbed off with excuses and then dealing with rude staff who when we complained, seemed irritated that we were bothering them. Have since complained to the management via email to highlight these issues and received an equally uninterested and feeble response.( i had to chase them for this priviledge)

Food okay - but long long time since I have experienced such an appalling attitude to customer service.

Bet this review doesn't make it onto their website!

Stay away.......

Went for the claim of "top notch" food mentioned by another reviewer.

Sunday Roast was the order of the day. Service was reasonably swift, though it was quiet when we ate.

We found the portions small (two small roast potatoes, one small yorkshire pud, some mashy carrot thing, lacklustre cabbage, and parnsip chips). The vegetables barely warm - probably been sitting on the plate for a while. And the meat (some had roast beef, some chicken) over cooked and a bit fatty. There was plenty of gravy though, and a decent selection of sauces.

It wasn't overly expensive which was OK, but it doesn't cost anything to keep the veggies hot, or put an extra potato on the plate.

Staff were very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was nice, but as decent Sunday roasts go, this place isn't one of the best.

I'm slightly biased because I live a whopping 50ft away from the front door but nonetheless, it's a great pub.

The beer is great; decent lagers (and despite it being my favourite lager, it's nice to see somewhere that doesn't feel the need to sell the obligatory Stella) and cracking ales. The Ubu and wheat beers are really very good.

The food is top notch; tasty, decent-sized portions (althought I wish they did a proper old-school pie) and they have a pretty good lunch menu for a fiver.

The staff are very nice, have always got time for a chat, and you feel like they remember you without you having to go twice a week for a decade.

The decor is somewhere between traditional and quirky; big old Chesterfield sofas (great when it's cold outside and you've got a book to read) and modern artwork which I believe you can buy.

All round good pub, tucked away in a calm little pocket of Borough.

Decided to try a new (fairly) local pub so read a few SE1 pub reviews and this place caught my eye.

I agree with the people who posted positive comments for this place. The place had a good atmosphere, good decor, friendly staff and customers alike. We did not eat but the beer was good and the food coming past us all looked nice so will be back again.

Opposite student halls i literally lived in this pub for 9 months. Friendly staff, good drinks, amazing sunday roast and decent background music. Always a chilled place to hang out and providing boardgames to wile away the hours is always appricated.
RaeOfSunshine - 24 Aug 2006 00:07
Top pub. Always a fun atmosphere all nights of the week (probably due to proximity to various student halls...), great quiz (though I think it's not on during the summer), good choice of beers/wine and pretty good food. Nice decor too.

Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

One of my favourite bars in London. Great atmosphere, good food and really friendly service. Good during the day as well as the evening. Smashing burgers!

A great little pub to spend an evening in.

A good selection of drinks and reasonably priced too.

Stop in on a tuesday for the quiz night. which is defiantely worth taking part in.

not sure about the "best presented pub in London", but definately well worth a visit. I've never had a bad experience here, they've got the atmosphere just right - it all very affable. students, trendies, over 40's and regulars, all creating a cool mix of people. Sunday Roasts are definately worth a go.
DanSE1 - 23 May 2005 12:28
This has to be one of the best presented pubs in London. And... the staff are really nice and friendly and the food's great, especially the Sunday roasts.
Adrian - 3 Nov 2004 18:36
So much nicer under the new management. Food is excellent and staff friendly.

Since this pub has been taken over by new young management and refurbished, it is now a great bar to come for a drink and the menu they offer is especially good.

A very vibrant and relax bar, well worth visiting. And next to a nursing halls of residence, never a bad thing!
