user reviews of the Old Bell, Enfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went in over the weekend. I cant really offer a detailed review as it was late, the place was dark and all I was concerned with was getting served; which I did quickly and politely.

All in all, very good band. Good regulars (by the looks of it). Good staff (except one moody bird). Couldnt complain.

Hardly any bottled beer, cheap disgusting wine poor lightly uncomfortable chairs only good thing are the bands that play there
Onelove - 8 Oct 2013 17:24
2 real ale pumps - neither of them in use. This seems the normal state of affairs here. They didn't even have any Newcastle Brown or similar. They seem to have some decent bands and a bit of a music theme going on, but as far as the bar is concerned there is absolutely nothing to make me want to set foot in the place.

beer selection not brilliant but passable for watching a band. the music scene there really seems to have taken off - some good bands down there most weeks. Decently priced beer. Some of the spirit of the old Enfield Arms has returned perhaps! (much the same patrons at least!)

Well What can I say about this pub......Well 95% of pubs in Enfield and Enfield Town are full of druggies this pub is def in 5% that has NONE what so ever, The landlady and the regulars do not take kindly to their pub being used in this way. If you are new to Enfield and are you are looking to become a regular somewhere please please try this pub, Its nice a quiet during the week and when you want a proper bender Fri and Sat nights are some of the best around. The landlady and the regulars are some of the best around and I have never seen any trouble in here in my year of going in there. Great barstaff great Landlady and great regulars. Cant wait to go again.

Bit of a glowing review from the single poster below.
But I will concur that the Old Bell is a good local Enfield pub for a music night on Fridays and Saturdays when it is generally a welcoming place with a good crowd in to see the largely cover bands performing on the small stage.
What I wont agree with is that the beer is excellent. There are two handpumps on the bar, but Ive rarely seen anything coming out of these, which tends to leaves the Keg version of Flowers, and excellent is not an adjective that can be used for this. Which is why we usually jump out at the interval for a quick one in the real ale dispensing pubs just down the road.
Forthcoming acts can be found on the Lemonrock listing pages and the pub has a good collection of 60s, 70s and 80s album covers and vinyl decorating the walls.

What a fantastic place ! ! ! ! !

I was driving past in a cab with a couple of friends and saw the crowd bustling one Friday night. We were on our way to Enfield town centre to have a stagger round the pubs but never got there!

The music was fantastic ! ! ! There was a band playing called the RUNAWAY BOYS

An evening to remember! And every other time we've been its the same great atmosphere.

Now its a regular haunt of ours - the beer is excellent and they've got music on Saturdays and Sundays with a variety of good bands

Oh and if you're up for some more music - JAM SESSIONS on a Sunday afternoons.

Sadly no food but - a couple of really good take aways across the road!

After making the last comment - I emailed this website twice to ask for it to be removed -

I was going through a rough patch with my ex girlfriend and this comment wasn't warranted.

Again - I'll ask REMOVE it please

Hi guys, 4 months on :-

Vicky has now had a baby boy, I noticed that the more often I visited, the more my custom got taken for grated and the less polite the landlady is.

I recently moved to Enfield and visited a few local pubs.
The first was the Wheatsheaf where the clientel were so strange that one person even thought I was an undercover cop, the same person having white powder round his nose!
The second was the Two Butchers across the road where I visited after the gym one day and was made to feel like a second class tramp because I arrived in my tracksuit, I had a pint and never returned to these pubs.

The third pub I visited was the Old Bell.
Great music on Friday and Saturday evenings - all live bands of which most are very talented.
As for the clientel, you couldn't find a better bunch of more friendly, courteous and polite people with no sign of the druggies I found in the Wheatsheaf.
The Landlady and her boyfriend are very welcoming, nice, genuine lovely people.
Vicky landlady is due to have a baby soon and I'd like to wish them both all the very best and to thank them for their hospitality over the last few months.

If its a wine bar that you're after, this is not the pub for you. If its a noisy sports bar you want,
with loads of morons shouting and swearing, then give it a miss. If its a quiet hotel wannabe bar you desire, definitely avoid it. If you are looking for a good old fashioned local, with decent
regulars of all ages, where you feel you can relax and have a couple of jars after work, this is your place. All ages drink here and all ages astonishingly get on well together. A friendlier pub would be hard to find. There is lots of banter of the more intelligent kind. Should you be into music, this is DEFINITELY your pub. The guv'nor looks to put on a range of different bands on most Fridays and every Saturday, and has Sunday jam sessions, starting about 5.00 pm. These are usually of a very high standard, and cost you nothing. Its a great way to end the weekend. One of the regulars, in conjunction with the pub, will occasionally showcase up and coming talent. This is not to be missed. Keep an eye out for these events. There is a brilliant atmosphere in the pub when the bands are on, and you won't find that in most other Enfield pubs, if you can find one regularly showing live bands.
RIPHERM5 - 27 Mar 2010 14:44
agree with the last posting this is a grotty little pub, hard to get a beer as the tubby barman was outside smoking with his pals, toilets are smelly and dirty. bar area all tacky and sticky .top contender for tv The Grime Files, beer wasnt bad though (guinness)

just make sure your tetanus injections are up to date before visiting this rathole
4unitsaday - 11 Mar 2010 10:55
absolutely filthy toilets!!
pub looks dirty ,glasses look filthy you know that been used for 20years look
quite offputting when you pay 3 quid a pint!!!
outside full of fag butts obviously not swept
band on the day i went ...but to be quite honest most pubs in the area have bands on weekends...run out of 3 different beers so was limited to 1 lager or bottled beer
avoid this place like the plague
beerboy11 - 10 Mar 2010 16:47
The finest pub in Enfield, warm friendly staff who always greet you as if youve been there every day for years.
I wanted to watch the rugby and asked the staff and without hesitation the tv was switched on straight away. i stayed on to watch the football and enjoyed the banter between keen viewers.
Live music is brilliant and the quiz is always worth turning up for. Very impressed at the massive effort from the landlady to give Enfield drinkers some entertainment with their drink. This place deserves a visit, i would also recommend the pork scratchings. Seating has also improved and the rear smoking area is quite comfortable.

OB to become a block of flats in the near future.
inthegutter - 5 Jan 2010 13:26
I have to say that out of all the pubs in Enfield that I have been in to this place has the nicest group of locals and I was impressed that every other word wasnt an expletive.

The staff were nice enough, but I spotted no real ale as there was only a standard draught selection and unfortunately my Guinness wasnt the best Ive had. There is a dartboard and a couple of plasma screens for the showing of Sky Sports and I spotted a sign advertising a live band on my visit last Saturday.

There are a few picnic tables out the back along with a smoking shelter that back on to a car park.

I would go back in here if in the area again.

yet another great night in the old bell

i love this pub . the music is great the staff r great
allaboutbeer - 29 May 2009 17:53
This pub has always had a warm greeting despite some odd looks. Live music is certainly their thing with a good rock dj on alternative fridays, why this isnt a regular thing is a bit stupid as the other week is karaoke in which one bearded bloke seems to be interested. Bands are good on a saturdays and many good nights had. Only problem is the seating. Staff are friednly and some i recognise from the Kings head.
clarkie10 - 24 May 2009 20:12

This is now my 'local' and is deffinatly one of the few remaining 'PUBS' in enfield. It looks like a pub and feels like a pub.
Has taken a little while to get going but a cracking new Jukebox, Rock Nights on Fridays and ALWAYS great bands on the Sat night. Starting to really fill out now at the weekends and a great bunch of regulars and friendly bar-staff make the atmosphere classic. Dare i Say the Rock night feels a tad like my old 'Home' The Enfield Arms??? Am hearing of Sunday
Acoustic Jam's and other things....

Anyway, I always have a good laugh in the Bell
and its great to see Mick & Lisa still pop in on Sundays
and other occasions. Up The BellEnders!!!

Can't say that I ever came in here on a regular basis under the previou smanagement, but FFS people can we just let by-gones be by-gones now. This is a decent pub, one of the very few left in Enfield. It has a good crowd, a nice atmosphere, decent service, reasonable prices and they bother to put entertainment on regularly which is more than can be said for many pubs round here. The landlord and landlady have always been friendly and pleasant to me. Now can people please stop wasting their own and my time by coming on here and constantly bleating about how they want the previous owners back. I'm guessing that's never going to happen and in the meantime there are plenty of us that actually like this pub just as it is at the moment that don't need our buzz killed by constant griping from reactionaries that want the pub to change back to how it was X number of years ago. Get over it, seriously.
This is a good pub, there are plenty of others that may be more to your taste nearby, why not go to one of those instead of bitching on here like a broken record? I'd love to go back to some of the pubs I used to frequent when they had owners and a style I prefered (The Sporting Green - this means you!), but have had to reluctantly accept that things change and have changed my choice of pub accordingly. Seems a more sensible approach. Count yourself lucky folks, two of my all time favourite pubs are now either rubble (The Enfield Arms) or Boarded Up and decrepit (The King's Head), I've had to learn to put them behind me and drink elsewhere, I suggest that you do the same.
Oh, and before the inevitable questioning of my character for defending the pub, I wish to state clearly for the record and I am not the owner of the pub, I don't work for the pub, I'm not a relative on anyone that owns or works in the pub and am not a close personal friend of the owners either...I just happen to disagree with you and think that they're doing a fine job. Cheers.
Mr.Monkfish - 19 Apr 2009 23:37
i visit this pub weekly and think its the best pub in Enfield the staff are nothing but polite and welcoming. the live misic on a saturday nite is always great and the recently started Rock and Metal nite is pulling in a massive crowd.
so to all those people missing M and L so much they are here freqently on a sunday afternoon so come and have a beer with them !!! lol lol
beermonsteruk - 10 Apr 2009 11:16
No point in visiting, it'll probably be shut when you get there. Avoid until someone sensible takes it over - or, for preference, takes it back...

After more than a year without M & L it's closed for most of the week thanks to the 'management' annoying the tits off all the regulars and flushing them down the toilet as soon as they walked in. I want a 'Bring Back Mick & Lisa!' campaign.

Bring Back Mick & Lisa!
Bring Back Mick & Lisa!
Bring Back Mick & Lisa!
Bring Back Mick & Lisa!

HELLO THERE

I have been reading these comments about the old bell and about Mick and Lisa. and how people gossiping behind they back after when they left but when they use to run the pub those people where pretending to be friends to Mick and Lisa.

Some people dont think before they write something.
There was nothing wrong while Mick and Lisa they use to run the pub.
They where always nice and good to people and they have trusted so many people in the pub but in the end those people betrayed them to.
I know Mick and Lisa as I use to work for them. Most of the bar stuff where there just for the money and for the drinks and fun, I personally was there to do my job the best I can do and be good friend to Mick and Lisa and all in the bell.
I know all the people the use to drink in the bell and still does and some of you are here making comments about them thats not nice.
It was always nice in the old bell and we use to call it East Enders because in the bell all the costumers where like one big family and specially the gossiping was going on who got divorce or who got bit up but the ex wife and who got married and all that stuff.
There where so many sleazy people in the bell I didnt like it but apart from them all costumers where nice. It was nice when Mick and Lisa where there and such a shame I lost contact with them.
All I want to say is dont forget the good times and old friends and the laugh you use the have only for one beer and less 20 or 15 p per per beer as the bell was so nice when Mick and Lisa where there and now I havent been for a long time but without them the Bell probably it looks like The Hop Poles.

The last comment that they are glad the old landlords have gone and give the new guys a chance must be off the bus from chase farm

The Bell already had good beer friendly staff and live music weekly. The quiz has been going for over five years(Started by Mick and Lisa).
The new landlords have been in here for over 7 months now and apart from getting rid of all the teams and customers plus neglecting to clean the place they have done bugger all.
A wise man said to me if you visit a house and their carpets are dirty don't eat off their plates.
(Or drink out of their GLASSES)

I visit the Bell ocassionaly now and drink the bottled beer.

This place is what a pubs all about, good beer friendly staff and live music weekly. The quiz is always a good laugh as well. Heard a rumour that works will start soon on fixing the pub up. I for one is glad the old landlords have gone. Give the new guys a chance and this pub will get better and better....
enfieldlocal - 13 Aug 2008 13:14
Wow, I am seriously surprised by the negativity being directed at this pub! Have been visiting here on a more regular basis of late, initially for the Thursday Night Music Quiz (which is still very enjoyable) and subsequently on more and more other occasions too. I have never found it to be less than charming, friendly and warm. Barstaff are all good, polite and efficient. Beer isn't super cheap but is very much competitively priced with all the other pubs in this part of town apart from the outlet of one well-known cheap pub chain, and as is the nature of those places - you have to forego the entertainment that this place offers in the form of live bands, a good jukebox, the aforementioned quiz and so forth.
This pub has a very nice, peaceful, friendly and welcoming bunch of customers and feels like a little community, although equally well you are not pressured into unwanted social interaction if you don't want it.
Range of beer could be better (especially as Heineken seems rarely to be on anymore), and in a couple of places the decor is a little too shop-worn, but in some ways it adds a liver-in charm to the place.
All in all a good pub, simple as that.
Mr.Monkfish - 30 Jun 2008 10:31
The newbies put 25p on a pint in MID-SESSION, around 5.30 in the afternoon, couldn't even wait til the next bloody day. Buy a pint at say 2.50, five mins later 2.75.

They lost all the dart and crib teams. Rumour has it that they got in with a three month lease and an option to buy after. 500 ex-customers hope the newb's bank accounts are bad, very bad.

This place rated very high in Jan, within days it became a 0. Walk past it now during the week there's about 4 people in it.

inthegutter - 6 May 2008 20:11
Please ignore my last posting - Mick and Lisa have gone (Evicted by Enterprise Inns)-
Thank you Enterprise inns for evicting the best landlord and landlady we have had and giving us possibly the worst landlord and landlady we have seen for a number of years. Please Enterprise are you trying to close this pub down??????
Johnythrush - 12 Mar 2008 09:37
Great Traditional Pub and "the best Sunday roast in Enfield"
I have visited the pub on and off over last ten years The beer is always kept well and all the bar staff are friendly and the clientele are pleasant (obviously not all members are looking for the same thing in pubs) The music quiz on a Thursday night is well worth a visit and they are trying to bring live bands back on Saturdays Hooray!!!

Thrush - 21 Mar 2006 18:59
Not sure again.

There's not really a tangible reason i can think of to dislike this pub, but i just really do.

The staff were just really unfriendly, but in the politest way they could and im still trying to reconcile this very, very strange fact.

Hmmmmmmm.

TapsPunk - 20 Jan 2006 00:18
Decent enough pub of a decent size and with a reasonable selection of drinks at a good-for-a-tarditional-boozer price. Jukebox is good and the regulars appear to have very good taste in music. Service quick and pleasant. Nice environment that is both clean but comfortable and lived-in. Hard to understand why the pub was only half-full on a Friday night, but in fairness I'm not complaining as I got a seat.
