i happened to notice a help for heroes banner outside this magnificent pub - so i went in to investigate further . as it turns out they're having a fundraising night on saturday 12th december with an auction of genuine sporting memorabilia , various raffles including 100.00 bar tab - to be cashed in at the winners convenience , tickets for a night out at a top london comedy venue , sunday lunch for two (including wine ) , 50.00 body shop gift voucher and help for heroes official merchandise all this plus great music , free buffet , drinks promotions - with all proceeds going to the help for heroes charity . all in all sounds like a great night out for a great cause . definitely the place to be on saturday night !

was at the oporto on saturday 17 october - my friends and i had an absolutelly fantastic night. there was great live music provided by 'jimmy c & the blues dragons - playing some classy rockin' blues including some inspired covers by hendrix , the doors , stevie ray vaughan , zz top etc . i understand they're back next saturday (24th oct ). i noticed they're having a halloween party on saturday 31st oct - with a 50 prize for best outfit + great 70's / 80's tunes by dj 'peetlejuice' complete with halloween decorations , lights , pumpkins & smoke machine + free buffet / cider punch . sounds like the best night out to be had in the east end. make time and get yourselves down there - you won't be disappointed !

At long last, finally a decent and (permanent) new landlord at the Oporto. Pete West was on top form and and it was great to see a lot of the old faces from East London, especially the lads from Bethnal Green and Bow. I was there for the whole weekend. What a great atmosphere, the music was fantastic, the drinks were flowing freely and it looks like there are more great things to come. So do yourselves a favour and get yourself down to The Oporto to have a guaranteed good night out.

Went to first night and had a great time, the bar staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was like being back in the Old Globe but without the crush. The new management is in the process of redecoration and it will take time to get it to a high standard they want.I personly can not wait to see the pub when it's finished as I'm sure it will one of the best pubs in East London.

went to oporto last week expecting to meet this legendary barman??? only to be told by the new landlord that he just signed a 6 months least, seems like a nice enough chap he,ll do for us only ten the office!

I have been using the Oporto for about 3 months in and that time there has been 3 managers, they have all been ok but at present there is a buzz about the place regarding a new management. If half of what I hear comes true it is going to be a great place to spend the evening, you will not want to miss it.

Well Clarance...... I don't know why you are telling us not to bother checking out the new landlord of the Oporto....He's not even in there yet !!
If you had asked anyone in the pub, they would have happily told you that...Give it another couple of weeks mate and you will most certainly see a massive change.
I do hope you come and enjoy

a couple of us went to check out the " very popular local publican" ..... do not bother......
clarance - 9 Jun 2009 12:11
A little bird has told me that this good (but not very inspiring) pub is about to get a new landlord. I shall definately be darkening its portals, if the new owner is who I believe it to be! The man is a legend of the pub trade in the East End! Expect excellent food, excellent music and true "Bonhommie"!
EASTENDERBENDER - 18 May 2009 10:07
i've head on the east end grapevine , that there's a very popular local publican about to take over these premises. watch this space - it's gonna be very good indeed !

Its not a bad pub at all. The staff are very friendly, the locals are up for a laugh. The atmosphere during Karaoke is great.

The only downside to all this is the beer off the taps arent the best (still better than any other pub in Canary Wharf). The Heiniken is ok.

But cant really complain especially when sitting outside on a summers day drinking a very reasonably priced pint bottle of Magners (close to the price of whetherspoons) and it feels like heaven.

Unfortunately this pub along with two others by the dock gate; "Charlie browns" and the "Blue posts" Both now gone, never really lost the stigma attached to this part of limehouse, Back in the 60s 70s the area was synonymous for on-leave merchant seamen,So you can imagine what took place after dark. When charlie brown died, It was reputed to have been the biggest funeral the east end had ever seen.
Althought the "oporto" Has had several new owners in as many years; It as never really reached it's full potential and being so close to canary wharf, one would have thought it's only a matter of time.

Were told the previous week that they were showing the sports on Sunday afternoon, when we turned up they wouldn't bother checking for ages why the sports weren't on the TV - eventually just told us no sports being shown, tough luck! Would recommend only for the good Heineken.

Great pub, but only if you don't mind mixing with the regulars! Lot's of interesting and fun characters to have a chat with but take getting used to!

If you're in the mood for a mingle after work in the city then this is the pub for you

If you want to feel safe in a pub then go here - it's right next door to the police station (although whether or not that actually makes it safe is anyone's guess!) Staff seem indifferent to your presence, although everyone gets a welcoming sniff by the resident dog! A good pint of Heineken on tap, and a nice seating area out front in the summer. Worth a visit.

Visited last year and found the place anything but friendly. I was with a friend, dressed reasonably smartly (our crawl included the GRAPES) and popped in. The pub was recommended by the Good Beer Guide so thought we could not go wrong. However the EVERARDS TIGER beer was a little on the warm side and just beginning to taste of bad apples - we were afraid to take it back to the bar as my friend was being stared at in an intimidating way by two men on the table next to us so we thought it best to leave.
