user reviews of the Top House, The Lizard

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A little smarter than the other pub in the village and the clientele was more restrained. Quite big inside but still cosy with interesting pictures on the walls. St Austell HSD was in good order.

Don't know if it was because the Sun was shining, but The Lizard as a village seemed prettier and more welcoming than on my previous visits, admittedly 15 years ago or so... We parked at the NT car park at Kynanace cove and walked to Lizard point, surely one of the greatest walks in Britain... Stopped for a swift pint at The Top House; Pub was nice, beers were St.Austell Proper Job (excellent), Best and Tribute. Didn't eat, so cant comment on food. One footnote; There are a couple of tables in front of the pub, but if you visit midday/early afternoon there is an excellent little terrace which is a real sun trap at this time around the back.

Visited last Sunday lunchtime for a pint. Apparently new landlord, made a good effort to be welcoming despite "reserved" signs on almost all the tables. Good open fire. St Austell beer good.

Got off on the wrong foot here - the blackboard outside says it opens at 11:30, but had to wait around outside till 12! However, the Dartmoor was excellent.

We stayed nearby and used this pub over a few evenings last week and found it to be excellent. There's a really good atmosphere about the place, with lots of people who were clearly local. Some of the other reviews here suggest that locals have abandoned The Top House but that's clearly true only of some- there are plenty who still use it. The beer and wine were good and the food was very good - the menu looked like 'pub grub' but was cooked to a much higher standard than average.

Yes they do serve hsd. I'm afraid that this was a touch disappointing. The staff are friendly and accomodating... The food is good but on expensive side but the beer was pretty ropey for a cask marque pub. Had 4 pints of either tribute or hsd over the week and all were cloudy, lifeless and by the end of the pint more akin to dishwater.

Have not visited this pub yet. Do they at least serve HSD?

Note your comments r.e. being turned into a restaurant. Please see my comments made last year about the sister pub 'The Golden lion'. How do these people make such a **** up?

A strange place, the landlord/manager made a big thing about how the wines of offer were all excellent.....then tried to fob me of with a cloudy pint of Tribute!?

When myself and the OH arrived for a drink it was empty, but after a couple of drinks it started to fill up and said landlord/manager, he of the cloudy pint came up and told us to move as a party of four needed it. On told we were not going to stand he got a bit aggressive and said we could sit outside (charming) we refused to budge and were told after we had finished our drinks to clear off.

Shame.

If you are in that part of the world and want to place where you aren't treated badly for assuming a pub is a place for a drink, avoid this place.

The Top House was taken over a few weeks ago by the family who own the Golden Lion in Stithians. Unfortunately it has since taken a dramatic turn for the worst. The new owners simply want to run it as a restaurant and have completely excluded their local trade through a number of means. For instance one of their first acts was to get rid of the folk evening and stop all other local fund raising events such as the quiz nights. An immediate stop to entertainment. OK so it is the summer season but you will now be asked to move if you sit at a table without buying a meal and from experience anyone who has argued has since been asked to leave. The locals are now boycotting the Top House in favour of the nearby Witchball. The food is OK but ridiculously overpriced when compared with the fayre on offer at the Witchball and Housel Bay Hotel, both nearby and better quality and cheaper in the case of the former. I look forward to seeing the for sale sign in the winter

Until the Witch Ball opened down the road a couple of years ago, the Top House was not just the only pub in the village but also had the proud claim of being the most southerly pub on mainland UK. It will now have to be content with second place. Despite appearing to be as a much as a hotel as a pub, it does still have a pubby feel and manages to cater for a wide customer base of walkers, tourists and locals without leaning too heavily in favour of any particular group. There interior houses lots of maritime memorabilia, photos, pictures and artifacts, some culled from from the local shipwrecks and former lifeboats that operated from the headland. There are plenty of local coastal views and village scenes dotted about so if you dont fancy the 20 minute walk, just grab a beer and look at the paintings! One area contains a pool table and dart board whilst there is a separate section that is presumably used more for dining in the summer months. Despite being in a tourist hot spot, the prices are quite reasonable; 2.50 for a Betty Stoggs (Doom Bar & Green King IPA being the other options for ale drinkers). Sadly the Witch Ball was closed when we were here so the Top House got our undivided attention and whilst service was slow, it does do a good job at the end of a long walk.

Another pub with a nice welcome. Maybe its just my face that encourages people to smile and say good afternoon?
Very nice dinner, a bit dearer that we had been paying but worth it. I had Guinness in here for a change. It was served in a Guinness glass which sounds obvious but there are many that don't. It was also poured correctly. I would give it a 10 but I had to save that for 3 pubs that were just that bit better so 9/10

One of the strangest boozers I have ever set foot in regards atmospehere. Very much an 'Us' ie locals and them 'Tourists' venue. As you would expect its geared up to squeeze every penny out of the tourists. Not that its a bad pub mind you. Quite nicely done so that although there is plenty of room for the diners there is also a bit of the pub that has a local feel.
Food is expensive and the drinks arent cheap but a good standard of both even if the service is a bit slow (And it wasnt high season) and the serving staff consisted of bored local teenagers who were only there for wages. Not bad overall.

The most southern boozer in mainland Britain. Furnished with stuff rescued off shipwrecks, and lots of photos around to remind people of what a danger the rocks below are (Lizard Point).
The Beer is St Austells Brewery, so, as usual, very tasty.
Nice little beer garden. Allows dogs, and will give water if asked.
