user reviews of the Fox @ Excel, ExCeL London

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The bars inside the Excel Centre are all plastic and horrible and this is a welcome alternative. Food ok, one real ale (sometimes), clean and comfortable - nothing brilliant, but nothing terrible either. A good choice if you are at an exhibition, but not really worth a special visit.

Massive modern pub set over 3 floors. Only get really busy when events are on at Excel, but pleasant enough at other times. Good for watching football, has got large projector type screen plus many other screen throughout. Normal selection of generic beers and 1 real ale pump.

Great beer, friendly service and fresh prompt bar food. All served up in a really chilled enviroment. The beer is slightly pricey.... but then again considering the location and the competitions prices - very reasonable.
They have started a new Night On Fridays called Foxy Fridays? It was brilliant! Free entry, good music and mostly over 25's.... quite honestly there is nothing like it in the area.

I held my Birthday Party in the larger lower bar -.
The Staff were helpful and the atmosphere was great.
The food was amazing and everyone ensured the night went well.
Great Venue, worth a visit.

FOOD AND SOFT DRINKS ON:Y. Suggest that anyone contemplating a visit checks before they go. For several weeks now they have had a sign in the window saying that because of "Licensing Issues" they are not able to serve alcoholic drinks.

The staff are always huddled together at one end of the bar, completely oblivious to anyone requiring service. They dont use optics, but use a small metal measure which they never fill up, which is a bit of a cheek, when a pint of Kronenberg and a large G&T is over a tenner.

The real problem is that there is no competition, if there was a halfway decent traditional pub within walking distance then this place would be empty, but unfortunately there isnt.!

Unlike the other contributors I prefer this to the Fox@Connaught but there isn't much to choose between them. Great for watching football.

Toooo quiet unless theres a exhibiton!
exhibition time=[arty time.
whogaarden - 23 Feb 2008 01:37
Hmmm what can I say?
Fox@connaught is better, excel is like being in a cellar, a bit dark. Good when theres an exhibition on at Excel, dead when theres not.

I prefer the Fox Connaught, but the San Miguel was cold here also. Needs to be looked after a little bit more and the staff could speak better English. But it was great for the footy at the weekend.

Visited at lunchtime yesterday; served by a friendly enough barman with perfect command of English. Strongbow 3/pint. Didn't seem too awful, aside from the lack of real ale.

All been said already!!

By comparison to The Fox the bar in the Novotel hotel felt like an oasis.

I have been here several times... yes the staff are a little slow and often chat to each other which after a while is a little frustrating, however there are now a larger amount of staff for which English is there first language which now makes things a lot easier. For London i class 3.30 as reasonable for a pint of lager and they do quality lager as well, yes i can probably buy for less in east London but not without the inherent danger of being stabbed. (I must say i have been to the US and never received free food!!). Avoid when a large excel conference is on for obvious reasons..

Few plus points it now shows the vast majority of premiership matches, as mentioned the beer is not over priced and i like the general ambiance of the place for a new boozer, the fact that its in a converted warehouse gives the place some character as opposed to the many soulless bars that are dotted around London.

You think place is bad, you should go down the road to the Fox @ Connaught!! They are truly appalling. WE have started going here for luch and this place is an improvement!!
B33tlejuice - 14 Sep 2007 12:24
I completely agree with the above. Unbelievably bad service, the staff seem to be great at looking busy and chatting to each other but not serving any customers, and when they did serve us even their attitudes had an attitude! We (eventually) ordered a Pimms and a Coke and they came in the same glass (mmm, yummy), I had to mime what soda water was, and had to explain in VERY simple terms what a shandy was too. As GC22 said ordering more than two drinks at a time was pointless too. The food was okay but on the one occasion we did eat the cutlery was brought to us when we'd all finished out meals (thankfully it was burgers & fries), and I cleared our table myself in the absence of any waiting staff. In the USA our food would have been free. Not in good old England!

It's not hard to run a bar, people have been doing it for hundreds of years. Staff training DEFINITELY required!!!
let_me_see - 17 Jul 2007 13:47
Possibly the worst service I've ever known. The staff cannot understand what you are ordering (Please train them properly!) & I think one of the barmen there must have the world record for pouring a pint in the slowest time ever. Ridiculously overpriced, but then I suppose this is to fleece the business people who stay locally or go to ExCel for conferences & shows. Honestly, over 4 for a decent SMALL glass of wine? Get a grip guys, this is East London, not Knightsbridge!

I'd have to agree with Raimundo - unless you're absolutely dying with thirst its probably best avoided. Difficult to buy more than two drinks at a time, as most of the bar staffs' command of English is rudimentary - much sign language and pointing required.

This public house is to be avoided like the plague by anyone who appreciates a decent pint. Not only is John Smiths the only bitter available, but on two of the three occasions when I have been foolish enough to go in, it has either not been available or, as was the case last night, it ran out. One to avoid.
