Hello!!
mcroyal - 12 Aug 2011 23:04
This bar has recently re-opened as The Cape - real ale available but more of a young persons venue bar. South African theme.

Popped in the other day and tried the Andwell (it was the only one of four pumps working) - it was warm and tangy, eurgh. Early days but I suspect that quality will be pretty indifferent outside of the weekend.

The interior is a fairly bog-standard take on a town centre bar, IKEA fittings and some sofas. Apparently this place is managed by the same person who owns the Hook & tackle these days...?

Real ale has been introduced to this bar. There were four handpumps when I visited and the beer range was Youngs Bitter; Marstons Pedigree; Wells Bombardier and a local beer - Andwell Brewery's Gold Muddler. (though it is possible that not all beers are on at any one time) The Bombardier was 1.95 a pint which is pretty good for a town centre venue bar these days.

Still enjoy this pub on a Saturday lunch time. Good deals on the drinks. The only down side is the terrible state the womens toilets are always in. I wish they would get the doors fixed so they lock!!!

2000 years of human evolution then you enter here. Still a good enough point to realise Darwin himself was a chimp and there is no point. SQUAWK!

I think this pub is great. I dont tend to go in the evening but i go on a saturday afternoon and it is really nice. Get the card so all the good drinks are cheap!

Actually I'd disagree, its a great place to watch the footy and I drink here quite alot, as long as you have their card you can get cheap pints but the bouncers do give it some attitude

VARSITY IS THE NEWEST THING TO HIT READING, UNFORTUNATELY NOT THE BEST, PERSONALLY I'D RATHER DRINK METHS IN THE BUS SHELTER THAN DRINK HERE ITS FULL OF IDIOTIC STUDENTS DRESSED IN AN ARRAY OF COSTUMES, EXTORTIONATE PRICES AND THE MOST UNHYGIENIC BAR STAFF EVER, I NEED A SHOWER JUST THINKING ABOUT IT
anonymous - 20 Jan 2006 06:16
Its now become Varsity its far more better. Bouncers arent too bad either. Asked them what had changed (as i was a little unsure if i would live if i went in) and they simply said ' we just dont let any of the c**ts in!!

Overall I had a good night here was much better than the others that it has replaced. OK priced drinks but buy a V Card and you save 25%!! so ever cheeper.
