One of the great pubs in Prague, I go every time I visit the city. Sorry if some find it unfriendly but it is a typical local Czech pub and, frankly, they are not too concerned whether you come back or not - they serve the neighbourhood not tourists. Going there with a Czech speaker helps.

I didn't ever have such experience with service in a pub. The waiter was terrible. When a foreigner sitting next to me asked if I could ask the waiter about the price the waiter replied "He has it on the paper. It's not your business!" (it was impossible to read what he had written there). He was disgusting regarding his smell and clothes. Really, if you don't want to have traumatic experiences don't go there.

Not the friendliest place to someone not speaking Czech but thats probably how they retain their authentic feel in such a touristy area. I recommend braving it and you won't regret it!

A great little pub close to the castle.We sat at a table with people from France,Belgium,Romania and some locals all enjoying a chat over a few beers.The European Parliament should send a few MEP's here.They may learn a thing or two!!

Yes,a basic pub, pure and simple. We got there too late for food, (watch out it closes at 10 on sunday).It is a simple room full of simple pursuits, drinking and talking. Also the cheapest beer we found in Prague, (25k about 60p for 0.4l.) Less is more.

I searched out this hostelry in april this year after reading the review by anonymous, and foun it one of the best bars in Prague . It doesn't try to compete with any oyher bar ive ever been too, it just does what it says on the the tin. It serves beer and food! thats all, but it does it without neon or skantilly dressed barmaids , theirs no fancy tables ,just good solid benches and tables , your not expected to find a corner and have the entire table to yourself ,you just sit where u can and join in with the locals and it doesnt mater that you dont speak the same language your just there to enjoy yourself. I went with my wife and two friends and the best testiment i can pay is that my wife wanted to go back most days and in fact ive just booked again for December and we will definatley be making a pilgrimage there.

Well it gets full marks from me - not a place to come on a Prague stag but one of the most peacefull pubs I have ever been too! Good work!

I will bow to your admission of fairness, truthfulness and literary skills. Not sure why the rating is now 8.8 from 8 people now though! I may have actually been here - I have done many a bar in Prague but it was in the days before I even contemplated doing pub reviews and I can't now be certain of exactly which bars I went in. Now the mighty Spurs are back in Europe where they belong, there is a possibility of coming up against one of Pragues finest and if so, it will give me a good excuse to check out this place and offer my own humble opinion.

oi don't just assume its all a piss take Roger! Maybe a pub you have never been to is worth 10/10.
I do know a couple of the people (well more than a couple, but certainly not 9) who rated this 10/10 when I nominated it for the site but there's nothing wrong with that is there. Myself and those people just think it is worthy of the accolade, and lets be honest, with a review as good as mine, perhaps people were put off by having such a hard act to follow.
I have always found that all my life - my own brilliance puts others off from even trying. Its a crying shame. I am like Sir Lancelot really. Tragic.

I am not doubting any of Stonch's comments regarding the quality of this establishment but it does seem strange that such an obscure place receives 9 consecutive 10/10 ratings in a short space of time and yet only 1 person leaves a review. If I rated a pub 10/10 I would certainly want to leave a few comments. This rather smacks of collusion to have some influence on the Top 40 listing. Please tell me I'm wrong.

One of my favourite pubs in the world.
A wonderful pub in a renaissance building run by the Friends of Beer (a former political party, now downgraded in status to a civic association) as a cooperative venture. All profits go to the school for blind children next door.
Despite its prime location by the Castle and because of the aforementioned Friends of Beer, this is just about the only pub in this part of Prague still frequented by locals. Indeed the table in the first of the two rooms is always reserved for regulars - so don't sit there! This front room is also the tap room, where a portly bearded chap in an apron serves up Kozel (light and dark) and Pilsner Urquell for around 50p a pint in UK terms (prices correct as of January 2006). A range of spirits is also on display, the bottles often raided by the bar staff as they serve.
Basic food is served also at very low prices - fried cheese and chips comes in at about �1.50 for example.
Very sedate and civilsed in the day even when busy, so a wonderful place to take a break from sightseeing at the Castle.
Do make this part of your trip to Prague but treat this wonderfil place with respect.
