user reviews of the Sun Inn, Clun

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Of the 2 pubs in Clun, we preferred the Sun with its many rooms and general ambience but yesterday's visit was only fleeting so will have to revisit another day and spend a lot more time in the town undertaking further research. Beer wasn't quite as good as in the other pub so what you gain with one hand you lose from the other....(ales on sale were Three Tuns Solstice, XXX and Stout).

The Sun was the first of the two pubs we visited in Clun yesterday. The two were like chalk and cheese. The Sun was suffering from a power cut. But this only served to make for a great atmosphere. The wife wanted a Tia Maria. Unfortunately the last bottle was sat on the bar with a candle in it. The barmaid then used it as a makeshift lantern to go and retrieve another bottle. This place clearly has a few characters, some of whom had clearly consumed one too many. One was playing a harmonica. There are 2 small rooms around the bar and a deceivingly larger space for diners to the side of the room on the right. Nobody was dining on our visit, presumably because they couldn't cook any food! Ales were all from Three Tuns - Rantipole, XXX & 1642. Without any lights, I'm not sure our visit was the norm. But this felt like a real step back in time, which was quite enjoyable.

The Sun is on the up with its new owners. Worth a visit if in Clun, along with the equally excellent White Horse nearby.

We've been visiting The Sun for around 15 years and generally each visit has been more disappointing in terms of service, food and drink (the mainstays of a pub) It's changed hands many times and we've noticed fewer locals in there each time.
BUT: we went last week and were delighted to see that the latest proprietors have worked wonders although they'd only been there a few weeks. The place has been cleaned up and revitalised, without losing any of the ambience. The food is superb, definitely a cut above average pub fare and all the staff are obviously making an effort to please customers. The locals obviously like it too as they've started to come back !
Long may it continue.

Late Sunday lunch after dome wandering along Offa's Dyke. Excellent quality, portions and price. Beer great. Thoroughly recommended.

Closed! The pubco are looking for new tenants though.

The White Horse is now the last remaining pub in the town of Clun.

A sad time for pub and real ale lovers in South Shropshire.

This a nice cosy pub and while the beer is a little unimaginative and not exactly local, it's a Marston's house and it's not the landlord's fault. It's all in good nick too.

Just great over May Day bank holiday. Two guys gigging in the outside bar. Folk music inside. A friendly place to go back to.

I really liked this cosy pub. It was a chilly day and the real fire in the snugly bar made all the difference. Good beer and decent food. Clun is a great place for exploring the hills of South Shropshire.

Banks pub which also sells Jennings as they are both owned by Marstons. It's a fairly ordinary village pub. Two main bars - public and saloon, with a small rear beer garden and some smaller rooms at the back. It's a decent place, but lacks charm and character. The big draw for anyone passing through is the Victorian hand pumps in the saloon bar which are reputed to be among the oldest still in a pub. Pump clips are placed on them, but it's all for show, as the beer is pulled from modern hand pumps in the public bar.

Rebought by Banks Brewery so no longer serves the excellent Hobsons bitter and mild. Bit of a waste of time nowadays.
