Well it's finally over, this place is closed and looks
like it'll remain so.
The end of an era for a fine old Poole pub.

Previous pub Pure Drop. Well after the last pub the fact that this place actually no longer exists has come as a bit of a relief. Nothing much to say here. Next pub Cockleshell

Although closed for some time considerable work has been done on the building. Planning permission granted to erect single storey extensions at rear to provide new kitchen, toilet & dining facilities. Planning permission includes a condition that it should only be used as a public house.

In the right hands, this could be a brilliant back-street local. Seems to have improved since Paul, an obnoxious little scouser, left. Clientele rough and ready.

Sad to see on my last visit here recently no real ale on draught. Had a nice bottle of Old Speckled hen though so all was certainly not lost!
Of all the pubs in the old town area of Poole (and there are a few!) the Gas Tavern has to be one of the most unspoilt - pretty much unaltered since victorian times I would say.

Didn't go in the main pub but a side entrance called The Gas Lounge. Found ourselves in a large room with a pool table, football on the tv and a few friendly locals. Top place, my only complaint is it;s not designed for the taller person as I had to virtually limbo dance to get in the door and then continually duck to avoid the wooden beams!

Another description would be gods waiting room. Full of over 80's. No pool table or jukebox. In much need of decorating.

Good beer if not a little pricey.Locals friendly and like to talk.A vast difference from the riff raff next door in the pure drop.

When I was a mere slip of a lad, a mate suggested hitting Poole for a few drinks and said we should meet up in the Royal Oak & Gas Tavern. Which one I said gormlessly, thinking he was referring to two separate pubs. Now I know better. Friendliness of the regulars more than makes up for the fact that the place doesn't appear to have been refurbished since Chelsea last won the league.
