user reviews of the Betsey Wynne, Swanbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Recently been refurbished in (what's considered to be) a post-coronavirus format.

With ample spacing between tables and chairs - and some partitioning. Seems just a bit clinical.

This is an unusual pub in as much that it's quite a modern build (2006) but is not some bland identikit outfit from a national chain. From chatting to the landlady, it would appear that the village of Swanbourne is privately owned and the pub was built by the village owners for the residents, as there was no pub there previously. Appearance wise, whilst obviously modern it looks a little like a luxury country home with some timbered detailing on the exterior and inside too it's certainly one of the better examples of modern pub architecture that I've come across.

Inside it's essentially divided in to three, although there are no doors or walls between each area. The main bar area is cosy enough with a mainly red tiled floor although there was also some wood strip at one end. There are a few beams on the ceiling, a couple of pillars made of both wood and brick and a large, brick built dual aspect fire-place that had a wood burning stove blazing away which was a pleasant touch on snowy January evening. At one end were a few old leather armchairs and a small book shelf with some very old books on.

Off to one side is a restaurant area which had an impressive vaulted ceiling finished in a dark salmon colour. At the other end of the pub was a small snug with a flagstone floor, wood panelled ceiling and a large brick fire-place taking up almost one wall, although this was not lit. There was also a small TV up in one corner which looked a little out of place, but fortunately this was not in use.

Food wise, the menu was a cut above your usual "pub grub" with only one of the main courses coming in at under a tenner, and even then it was only 5p less and that was for a vegetarian pasta dish. Other options ranged mostly around the £14 - £16 price bracket, although some of the steaks were £20 plus. My Cod & Chips was a decent enough dish with plenty of firm, chunky flakes of fish, but then at £12.95 one could argue that it should be pretty decent. Some requested tomato ketchup came not in a small sachet or a manky old bottle, but in a small china dish that was itself on both a doily and a plate.

Beers on tap were the seasonal Rosey Nosey from Bateman's (although it's no longer very seasonal half way through January) and Tribute. The cider was Thatcher's Gold which makes a pleasant change from the ubiquitous Strongbow that you seem to get around these parts. My pint was served somewhat short, and whilst it was topped up when requested it was still not to the rim. The landlady didn't seem particularly cheerful, but the young waitress was pleasant and friendly.

Fantastic pub- very much old country pub feel from what is a new building.
Beer seems to be well kept, and they seem to have 2-3 ales on most of the time.

Really nice pub with great food & decent ales - I tried a very nice Vale Gravitas & my friend had Hook Norton bitter with our food (not forgetting the wine). Only one issue is the Hook Norton pint was presented with a head occupying about a quarter of the glass! They topped it up Ok but that's a bit sloppy I think.

Cracking pub cum restaurant - bit harsh reviews from the previous two posters. I found an eccletic mix of people here.

Yes it's more foody than most but the Tribute amongst the other beers was superbly kept.

Food is good but expensive though portions are generous.

Worth a visit.

It's no so much a pub, as a restaurant with a bar. The landlord is a very good chef, but the food is expensive. If your looking for a pub, don't bother.

Turned up on a Harley Davidson, which clearly did not go down well with the pub. Walked in and it was like Royston Vasey. All stopped briefly what they were doing to stare! Distinctly unwelcome feeling which was added to by the staff and manager, who appeared shocked that we were daring to be there! And despite there being empty tables, no, there was no room for us to eat! Quelle surprise! Very bad and wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

26th January - Took my Mother-in-law for dinner for her birthday - there were 5 of us. The staff were brilliant, the food was out of this world. We have eaten there a few times before, everytime has been fantastic food and fantastic service.

The waiter that looked after us was so professional, but in a really friendly way, nothing was too much trouble for him, or the rest of the staff. We were really made to feel welcome from the moment we walked through the door.

The price was in line with a great restaurant meal, no more than I would have expected to pay for this level of service and quality of food.

I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone that appreciates good quality food and great service. We will certainly be going back, time and time again.

Thank you to all the staff at the Betsy Wynne, it is very much appreciated, especially when you get a phone call the next day from your Mother-in-law to say how much she enjoyed the food, the surroundings and of course the company!

Very well run pub with good food, fine real ales, pleasant decor and a friendly atmosphere. It's in my top ten pubs within 10 miles of Aylesbury.

Just had an early lunch here with some female friends. We will definitely be back. Good food at sensible prices, good beer (yes a female beer drinker) good friendly service, extensive menu. All in all a very pleasant experience.Highly recommended.

Really nice place, and an interesting building. Food was excellent and good ales on. I found the service pretty good, though it was a quiet lunchtime.

Definately worth a visit if you're in the area.

Wll, food was good, beer was well kept and served. But at the end of the meal it took an age to attract someone's attention to pay the bill. It all went south from ther on in. I would have rated this pub higher, if it were not for that.

We recently had lunch at The Betsey Wynne pub in Swanbourne. This pub displays may plaques confirming it's excellent conversion from I guess an old house or farm building,

The interior in light and airy, making a really pleasent environment.

We had lunch and a couple of pints of real ale each and the bill was a modest 24, which I thought to be excellent value, considering the quality and freshness of the food. I am told that all the meat is sourced locally from farms within the Swanbourne Estate, which is great news.

In summary. Well worth a visit.

A very nice pub indeed. Good meal, good beer, good atmosphere. Not cheap food but well worth a visit.

We only called in to this pub on the off chance of a decent early evening bite to eat whilst dirving past. What a find!
- Great pints of ale.
- Truly excellent food: warming venison casserole was exactly what was needed on damp Nov evening. (House wine was great too - shame I forgot to catch the name)
- Staff were courteous, friendly and couldn't seem to help enough.

Will certainly be going back.

Excellant pub in an excellant location. Fantastic food and beer and a good selection of wines. Is a non smoking venue as well. Kids loved playing in the garden and adults had a well deserved beer after a long bike ride. Beautiful decor as well. Well worth a visit.
