Service today was absolutely spot-on with plenty of explanation to those customers who weren't familiar with the COVID-safe environment (as they hadn't probably been inside a pub since they were on holiday last year). Slightly surprised not to see a loc-ale on handpull but the Titanic Plum Porter was very good (didn't try the Adnams Ghost Ship or Southwold Bitter) and the pork pie "yapas" from Barnards of Fylingthorpe was delicious. Loved the fact that they sell Mint Imperials at 20p a handful and Batchelors® Cup a Soup is a £1.95 menu option.

Good old fashioned small town pub with bar and snug. Three ales on in good nic' though they also had two pages of gins.

The best pub in Whitby ,small, friendly and unpretentious ,the layout seems to automatically include everyone in the conversation .

The 5th and final pub I needed to tick from the 2015 GBG in Whitby.
A very friendly little 2 roomed 2 bar pub with a courtyard to the left as you enter. The back room has a very nice stain glass window with the words 'Black Horse Vaults'.
Both rooms are adorned with pictures of the local area, while the front has an interesting light hanging from the ceiling.
3 guest ales and 2 regulars on cask, both of the regulars from Tetley's. I opted for a guest which was Robinson's Wizard @ 3.7%, a very nicely kept pint.
Friendly barmaid, quaint décor, good beer .... this pub scores 8/10 for me.

Lovely traditional town pub. Beer all a bit mundane though - Shepherd Neame Spitfire is dull and unforgettable. The guest on our visit, Rhatas from Black Dog, is an acquired taste.

Great pub. Two small rooms. Avoid the darts when visiting the loo in the back!
Excellent beer. We tried the dark Black Dog ale and a ginger mulled wine. Prices expensive but ambience first class.

Visited this pub last week when holidaying in Whitby. A cracking cosy, friendly pub with a decent range of well kept ales on offer. As well as the usual Black Sheep they had a guest beer from Black Dog brewery which was quite nice. All the ales were well kept...
The pub offers tapas style food during the day and is well run and clean etc... overall one of the best pubs to visit in Whitby.

Cracking pint of Rhatas (�3.20) in this lovely two-roomed pub. Customers and staff very friendly. The best Whitby pub. Had two other guests on.

Love this pub! After visiting Whitby for the first time with my partner, we stumbled upon this little gem on a baking hot July day. After noticing that they sold a great range of bottled ciders and ordering an ice-cold bottle of Katy cider, I was in heaven! The regulars were really friendly, as were other holidaymakers and the bar staff were also lovely - they treated us as regulars from our second visit. As a dog lover, I also appreciated the fact that well-behaved animals were allowed into the pub, which makes a refreshing change these days. The Black Horse was easily our favourite pub in Whitby, and we can't wait to visit again.

Haven't visited this pub for a while and it was always a favourite, but �3.60 for a pint of Black Sheep and an astonishing �3.80 for Rhatas means I'll be giving it a miss in the future.

Unchanged front bar/taproom is a gem. The back bar is good aswell , with a raised corner to hide in. Great atmosphere and conversation makes this the friendliest pub in Whitby. Beer first class, though at �3.10 the Black Dog Rhatas is overpriced.

Another couple of visits to this pub over my now annual October Half-Term jaunts to Whitby, confirms this as a smashing little pub. It got packed with a nice mix of locals and Goths, but it was worth it for the banter with the punters and the excellent beer. The Hobgoblin and the Rhatas were on form. Smashing!

Pleasant two roomed old fashioned town pub - small but perfectly formed. A real boozers pub. Reasonable choice of well kept beers on handpump. My favourite of the pubs we visited in Whitby.

Proper old fashioned pub. Selectiion of snuff available behind the bar. Uninteresting selection of real ales - black sheep, green king, adnams and youngs kew gold. Very overpriced!

Excellent town pub with real character - the staff and locals should have equity cards (mean that in a nice way). Comfortable in a basic way, and would love it as a local. Best pint of Tim Taylor's Landlord I've had in quite a while. Downside: my wife's dry white wine was warm (not room temperature, warmer than that) on a wam day.

Had to make mention of my latest visit.
The pub has a white rendered exterior, with red toucherd. It is terraced and is small, with two rooms, but very traditional. The service is always nice and on these visits was packed with locals and bloomin' tourists!
The beer is great. The nicest pint of the weeked was the Black Dog Rhatas, but there was also Titanic Lifeboat, Alton Pride and another ale on. It even does a good Tetley Imperial, of which i had half.
JohnBonser has mentioned the food. Class, absolute.

Excellent. One of the top 3 pubs of the day.
Lovely little building with really nice bar staff. Plenty of real ales on and i had a Tetley Imperial and Butcombe Brunel - both of which were nice.
It was quiet when we visited, which i think was a blessing as i can imagine it being on the primrose path for anyone wanting a drink other than Carlin' or Worthingtons

This is a glorious pub. Small, but perfectly formed. Beer is great, and interesting 'tapas' offered. Interesting conversation had when I visited . I would definitely return.

Small traditional friendly pub in Church Street on the south side of the River Esk, a couple of minutes walk away from the swing bridge.
This side of the river is the quieter side as far as pubs/bars are concerned and accordingly, it would appear that the less discerning holidaymakers do not find this pub.
A good number of Whitby locals seem to use this pub, which is always a good sign.
The Black Horse still displays signage from its former days as a Tetleys pub, but it is now part of the Punch Taverns portfolio. Note the etched leaded windows at the side of the pub showing the name "Black Horse Vaults", although it appears that the pub is just known as The Black Horse nowadays, something I will get the BITE administrators to update ( as the former name is still showing at the moment ).
There's a strong commitment to real ale - Whitby Black Dog Rhatas is probably the one to go for here. The pub has now achieved a listing in the recently published 2009 CAMRA G B G.
Try the tapas if feeling peckish - various types of olives, nuts and bread dripping etc
There's also a Yorkshire cheese board and even snuff if you feel so inclined.
Mine host and hostess are welcoming and enthusiastic.
You should definitely seek this one out if in Whitby

A great little pub of the old school. Limited space, but there seemed to be a change of shifts among the clientele around 8 p.m. and we always managed to get a seat eventually. It bears repeating that they are very friendly both sides of the bar. The bar staff recognized and welcomed us back after just one visit. When full, the back bar had a real sense that if you were in the room, then you were part of the company. Nibbles such as bread and olives, were very welcome, and were served up very promptly. There is a good selection of hand drawn ales. I quickly settled on the Black Dog brew called "Rhattas", a porter type beer with rather more body than the other fairly pale local ales. I hazarded a guess at the pronunciation, and was right!

Classic little pub opposite the old marketplace. The front bar is pretty much original, basic and full of atmosphere. The back bar has a bit more seating but still compact, easily got full on a Saturday night. Friendly people on both sides of bar. Beer quality excellent, Taylors Landlord, though a bit pricey at �2.70. Local guest beer from black dog, Adnams bitter and a couple of other guests. And a rarity -Keg Imperial.

Very busy on night we visited, hard to find a place to stand. Ended up next to the "soup pot" which was still switched on and still had something left in the bottom, and some nicely stale pieces of bread next to it. So I guess Sunday lunch will have been Turkey Casserole and Bread & Butter Pudding. Anyway, a good pint, and hard really to fault a place that was clearly doing storming business.

I agree with all the other comments,we found this pub by accident and it has become almost a second home when we come to Whitby on holiday,full of characters and atmosphere,a proper pub and we recommend it to anyone we know going to Whitby.

Excellent little pub. Sadly most of the ales were off during my visit. What was on offer was in excellent condition and complimented the Yorkshire cheese plate wonderfully. To use a cliche, its a gem.

Great pub with a very varied clientel.Full of local colour and characters.Great beers and since the smoking ban a large and varied selection of snuff is on offer. Worth a visit.

As a member of staff in this pub I am ever so slightly bias. However, after workin in a number of pubs in the Whitby area, I can honestly say that I haven't known a landlady with such a passion for keeping well kept ales and stocking new, different products. These range from bottled ciders and belgian beers, to Hoegaarden on draught, up to 5 quality cask ales, to a range of tapas snacks and various other different snacks such as Biltong. A pub with a friendly atmosphere and well worth a visit.

A great little pub. Run by a young landlady who knows what she is doing. Used by locals and holiday makers. Usually 4 real ales, always well kept and a good selection of bottled ciders and Belgian beers. The bar staff are always polite and efficient. Well worth a visit.

On the way to Whitby Abbey. Non-smoking lounge and middle bar but the tiny and very cosy public bar still allows a smoke. One of the oldest pubs in Whitby and reputedly haunted. 4/5 regularly changing real ales. Good atmosphere especially if a jamming session is in full swing.
