Nice pub in the Market Place in Richmond. I find the issue with a lot of the pubs round here is that they don't serve anything more adventurous than Black Sheep. This place is a welcome exception. Two ales by Richmond Brewing Co - Drummer Boy and Greyfriars Stout - at £2.50 a pint. There was a 6%-ish cider, Black Sheep, and possibly something by Marstons too.

Nice pub with a traditional feel with split levels and different sections. Dark wood and furniture. Stained glass at the top of the servery. All very pleasant and the Greyfriars Stout was lovely.

One to check out when in Richmond.

The Castle has now had another refurbishment. Great to find a town centre pub with a real log fire. Now 4 handpumps one of which has a beer from Richmond Brewery and sold at a value price. 3 other real ales included Walls Gun Dog from Northallerton. Busy with locals on a Saturday lunchtime. A couple of TV screens but there is a small quiet room. Food looked to be a range of pub classics.

Yep another pub under new management. Had three ales on tried the local Richmond Brewery ale which was spot on. Seemed like a friendly compact pub. Will visit again when in the area.

The lease for the Castle Tavern has now been taken over by Richmond Brewery. There may have been some refurbishment since the takeover by Richmond. Their press release noted that there would always be 2 of their beers available but on a recent visit there was only Swale Ale which was undrinkable. It is a pity if the beers from Richmond have deteriorated as they did with the previous owners.

Totally refurbished and totally changed. A very nice pub, good food, excellent real ale ( 3 pumps now!!!!) - even She Who Must Be Obeyed likes it. Friendly bar staff help it along a great deal as does the ale ( have I mentioned this). Deffo 9 out of 10 - lose one point for succumbing to the Black Sheep/Theakstons duopoly that pervades this part of North Yorkshire - or am I being too picky?

The newly refurbished Castle Tavern is a vastly different pub to what it used to be. It is now light, warm, clean and very welcoming. The beer is excellent and very reasonably priced. The home made food is superb and the prices are down to earth and affordable.
The new hosts, Matt & Lisa ensure that your visit will be enjoyable.
There is live music every other Saturday and so far the bands have been very good indeed.
If you haven't yet visited this pub then do so, you will not regret it.
Also it has one of the best juke boxes I have ever heard, all the top forty hits going back to the 50's.
The Castle also boasts a real fire and has newly refurbished bed and breakfast rooms. In addition there is free wifi for those who need it.
No Sky sports - but you can't have everything and to be fair this pub has everything else you could need.

I believe this pub is under new management and is due for reopening in mid December... We can only wait and see if they can make a difference.. We have been in this pub on and off for many years.. It could be a great " old style pub" .. to be honest, the layout doesn't lend itself to anything else... However, i hear that the new management want to make it into more of an eating house... Can only wait and see...

Gave it a go. Arrived 7pm told it was closing and the last local drunk was throwing up in the bar. I'm quite pleased it was closing with any luck it will be permanent. Two of the worst pubs in the world are in in Richmond this being one.

Still closed. Lots of work going on when I walked past recently.

Shame the place is shut just now, it's well worth a look.

Awful, too bad to even go into. Give this place a wide berth. I'll give them 1 point for selling beer.

I visited this pub again at the end of 2007, since the last time i was there it is under new management. The decor has been revamped and looks stunning and homely. The atmosphere is relaxed. The staff are polite and friendly. The accommodation is spacious, clean and very comfortable...and its cheap for the area too! The food is of a very high standard. This is a place i will definitely be going back to visit.
