Welington Arms, Marlboroughback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
It's been quite a few years since I was last in Marlborough. I made a return visit on market day and tried a third pub on the High Street. This one is at the southern end. It's clearly an old building (18th century apparently). Doom Bar & 6X were the regular ales with Ramsbury Gold available as a guest. No real cider was available. Service was friendly. A TV was showing the Wimbledon ladies' final. I can't remember what the Marlborough and the Green Dragon were like. But you can do a half decent crawl along the length of the High Street here.

The Ramsbury Gold here was superb, service was prompt and very friendly, and the meal we had was lovely. The pub itself has a large bar area, with a lower seating/dining area leading to the beer garden.
Punters consisted of tourists and locals, ranging from the 'well orf' to the 'down at heel'. It doesn't seem that upmarket, a bit like an extension to the local Ladbrokes. However, there's a nice friendly atmosphere, which with the wonderful beer is just what you want from a pub.

Marlborough is the the kind of town that the recession does not seem to have hit. An archetypical English market town � a place where coins were minted in Norman times, Tudor kings hunted for deer and where coaches heading west from London stopped to feed and water their horses. Most towns have a claim to fame and here it's reputed to have the second widest high-street in Britain. It's a great town to wander round and you're spoilt for pubs with great architecture. The 'Wellington' is no exception. White painted with bay windows, it's set on two levels with a small beer garden (5 bench's) surrounded by old buildings. Large flat screen telly in the main bar and 'background music. It's been tastefully refurbished showing exposed beams and wooden floors. Jovial bar staff add to the warm feeling. Wadworths 6x and Bass Premium was on hand pump and I tried the local 'Ramsbury Gold' a golden smooth 4.5%ABV beer which is also used in a local sausage. On the menu, weekly specials are Wednesday Bangers & mash �5.95- Friday Fish & chips �5.95- Saturday Rump steak �7.95. The weekly specials board was extensive! Sundays is 'pub quiz' night. A 'pub crawl' round this town would leave you 'leg less' and I enjoyed my short stay. '

Better alternative to the Sun across the road, didn't eat but Ramsbury was good and staff offered friendly service.
Pub isn't too big but with a small fire was cosy enough, would be happy to visit again.

Visiting Marlborough March 2007 I checked the pubs listed as a likely venues for lunch
Unfortunately neither The Sun nor the Green Dragon suited our food requirements, so had to take pot luck in the Wellington Arms
A moment of serendipity, the initial impression was not too favourable, bare board floor, a bit dark and a few regulars having a lunchtime pint
However the food looked good, so we chanced it
There was a good choice of beer available, 3 cask bitters.
Because of afternoon commitments I chose a pint of Flowers keg, [lower %] to drink whilst awaiting our lunch [Fish & chips BTW]
The Flowers was, so so, but then I expected nothing better from it to be honest
The fish & chips was great, and 6.95, but they have a daily reduction of one menu item to 4.95. That days reduction was sausage & mash, and that looked magnificent
After the Flowers I had enough of that, and had a Ramsbury biter, cask pulled. I soon wished I had chosen Ramsbury first time round, very drinkable
To sum up, do not be put off by initial impression, well worth visiting.
