Still a decent ale house with an entrance from two sides. Ale was still quite reasonable. Locals get preference at the bar though.

One of the few surviving traditional pubs in the city centre that hasn't been given over to
Kareoke , blaring music and ice cold lager,always a good choice of real ales in good condition.

Recently spent a weekend in Wakey and this was the last pub we visited, wished we'd found it sooner. Great pub, good beer, well kept by the very knowledgable landlord. Friendly locals, good decor, we didn't want to leave.

Wish there were more pubs around like this one.

Lovely traditional basic boozer, run by an enthusiastic landlord who is now stocking guest ales. 50 yards from the West end of the Cathedral.

Note the clock is well ahead in here - thought I only ha dtime for a half pre-train when in fact there was time for a pint. You'll have to ask for any top-ups, they don't do so by default. Quality good though.

Been going in off and on for last 30 years and apart from the price of the beer the pub has barely changed (thank goodness!). A proper pub!

Proper pub, with decent beer at a comparatively reasonable price for what you get. I had Kelham Island ale (can't remember name!) but also had two pumps of Tetley Cask and another guest. Interior is interesting too. Worth a visit.

Only serving Tetley Bitter on my visit (though clips from previous guest beers feature tantalisingly behind the bar, mocking the two unused pumps in front of them) which was fine priced at �2.56. The interior is a basic 60's/70's old mans boozer, with a couple of drinking areas.
There are two entrances, the lovely tiled one in the photo, or a grotty one down a dingy alleyway. The landlord behind the bar was friendly enough.
Overall, not really what I'd call a worthwhile trip beyond the outside tiling given the nearby competition.

Good old traditional pub, and I hope it stays that way. I always have a pint at the Black Rock when I'm in Wakefield. A good place to meet before you start the "Westgate Run".

A great traditional Wakefield pub, narrow tiled frontage with curved windows. Beer has always been good nick , recently it was Tetleys, Green King (No need) and a guest beer. Christmas guest beer was a rich Batemans Rosey Nosey in good quality, not too cold for a dark beer. Slightly older clietel than the other licensed premises that surround it. Gents are directed to the Proper stalls downstairs, class!

Right in the middle of all the weekend hotspots, this is a great traditional pub with a good selection of real ales. Impressive hallway and front window.

Very nice friendly pub, right in the centre of the town.From a large selection of pubs in the area I would suggest a vist to this pub to anyone.

A small, traditional city centre pub. An attractive tiled entrance opens into a comfortable L shaped bar.
Disappointingly, just Tetley Bitter as a real ale on this visit, even though the pub is mentioned in the Good Beer Guide as having a regular guest beer. On querying this with the barmaid she said there wouldn't be one 'until tomorrow'. Great.
I can't get excited about Tetley's so I will just say it was fresh and well pulled, if a little too cold.
The barmaid was pleasant enough.
Can't see myself returning if the guest ale policy is such a gamble.
