Went here for a Milwall game (not a fan but live nearby and wanted to see what all the fuss was about) in January 2015. It looks a bit like a pub from a football hooligan movie, but there was no need to worry, everyone was really nice. Bar staff were friendly and the beer was good. Can't wait to go back again on match day.

Met up with wife's family for New Year's Eve drinks. Not been in this pub for about 20 years when I used to live in area, so wasn't sure what it would be like.
Place was busy but not too crowded. Good music and service at bar. No frills/nonsense pub. Prices good. Good crowd of all ages - wo all behaved themselves and got on well.

Had a great time!

cheap good guinness, good selection of old school bar snacks, pool table and amusing jukebox. dodgy casually racist locals.

I think this pub is full of charm. With John behind the bar who's always up for a bit of banter! I really think the place could do with a bit of an update though.... cigarette holes in the chairs and one of the couches near the door is totally torn. Only place in London that I know of that will turn off the soccar and favour the hurling.... Paul and John Joe are great craic too and are very helpful. They used have a scottish lad that worked there.... wonder where he's gone. I do admit that the two old ladies are a bit labourous on the eye but they know the bar like the back of their hand and are great at keeping the drinks flowing.

Proper 'Old man's pub' but has a bit of charm. Can quite surprise you as can be full of quite young people and have a buzzing atmosphere. However pick the wrong night and you could be saddled with the barfly all night who is crying on your shoulder.

The staff are miserable and the beers even worse but we always end up meeting there. Why for heavens sake!!! The Rosie is much better...

Avoid on St Patrick's Day unless you enjoy being groped by dodgy old men. Otherwise a glorious pub. Very good for watching the football; often they have two different matches on at once which is fun. Added bonus for me of being just round the corner so I don't have to cross any roads to get home. Tends to be full of Goldsmiths students with terrible haircuts but don't let that put you off.

This pub, the Amersham Arms and the Montague Arms are the only real old-fashioned boozers left in New Cross. Let's hope they don't get 'modernised'.

Pub is alright but some of the locals are just to old, drunk and depressing to bear sometimes.

Great for the football thanks to the atmosphere, and as long as you smile at them the bar staff usually serve you.

Fairly cheap for New Cross as well, much better than the Tavern and Bar Alchemy or whatever the hell its called now.

Genuine Irish boozer. Great atmosphere and friendly bar staff. Serves a couple of decent ales as well. Good for watching the racing.

A great pub, one of the things I miss most about New Cross. Good for afternoon and Sunday drinking, munching pork sctatchings and watching the older clientelle grumbling about the students. Staff are good craic, live horse-racing, good drink. Ace pub.

Has anyone seen Phil W. recently?

Is this place still run by that Norwegian woman, can't remember her name, must have been in the late sixties.
bertramr - 12 Apr 2005 13:27
best boozer in new cross has lots of character which other pubs lack

been frequenting this pub on and off for 13 years, an interesting mix of people and like scott says with a bit of edge. good pool table although usually only one decent cue...i did once have a rather drunk irishmen insist on 3shots on the black!!!.... the wine is like vinegar but the pork scratchings are good. fruit machines are outdated and seemingly programmed to only take money (at least when i play them!!) worth a visit tho and a good afternoon drinking boozer.

Good pool table, winner stays on, seven shots on the black! Full of students and the pikey Goldsmiths College Porters, spending their mimimum wages.

Nipped in after a few in the old New X Inn / Bar Alchemy (which was dead nasty).

The Marquis was full of students, lads, lesbians and raddled old irishman. Had a friendly vibe and interesting people, with a bit of an edge. Bit like New Cross in general.
MrScott - 30 Mar 2004 11:45
Great cosy bar with friendly staff and lots of character. It would be good if it had a late licence like the surrounding pubs.
Lolly - 10 Feb 2004 15:38
The best bar in New Cross. Like the Amersham Arms, a real Irish bar. Shame it doesn't have a late licence.

Cracking Irish boozer, always used to stop off here before mid-90s trips to the Venue. Good atmosphere, slightly uneasy mix of locals and Goldsmith's students. Be nice about the Millwall.
