busy pub, 7 ales on, friendly & helpful barstaff, decent food at reasonable prices. I had pints of Bank Top 'Flat Cap' [decent ale] & Abbeydale 'deception' [a pleasant golden ale].

Barmaids helpful, cheap prices on a Wednesday, I had pints of Lister's 'Best Bitter [a decent session ale] & Fyne Ales 'Jarl' [a tasty blonde ale].

An excellent traditional pub with a superb interior. Loads of real ales to go at. Older clientele mostly. Well worth a visit, more so than the more celebrated pubs/bars in the town in my opinion.

Beer garden has been improved, very good barman, quite busy, friendly locals. I had Moorhouse's 'Raven Brew' [nice pint] & Bank Top Brewery 'Dark Mild' [decent pint].

The most striking thing about this pub is its wonderful art deco interior. It looks original but I’m told it is a recent renovation. There are several types of red themed light fittings and at least 6 different styles of wallpaper in similar colour.
Unfortunately, the reddened lighting makes it difficult to make out what some of the beers are ! There were about 4 or 5 real ales available, I had Moorhouses Black Cat, and my friend had a fruity beer from Coach House, both of which were reasonable.

Another trip to wigan and a visit to the Raven, still a decent pub, 5 ales on and I had coach house Brewery 'Coconut', a very nice beer.

The Raven must be another place that I have walked past many times and never set foot in. I noticed it was in the latest Good Beer Guide. So with time to kill, I thought it might be worth a try. A bouncer at the door didn't bode well as I passed initially. But on returning from the John Bull Chophouse, he appeared to have disappeared. One young lady on a bench outside looked rather ill and another guy inside at the bar looked as if he wanted a fight! 3 ales and a cider were on - Wychwood Hobgoblin, Moorhouses Blond Witch, Bank Top Old Slapper & Sandford Orchards Fanny's Bramble. Service was friendly and the interior is very nice, with a central corridor spanning the pub and drinking areas either side. Another establishment I'll probably drop into next time I'm in Wigan.

Pub number 3 and it’s time to visit this internally stunning pub that has recently been restored to it’s former glory with all it’s original tiling now on show.
With the National Front march just finishing but with still some tension in the air I’m not surprised to see doorman as I enter the pub.
Inside it’s pretty busy, the bar area has football on the television’s near the front window. Food is also being served with the pie’s looking particularly good.
3 people behind the bar ensures quick service from the 6 hand pumps with 6 different ales on, Timothy Taylor's Landlord was in fine form.
I only stayed for 1 pint and chatted to a very friendly local at the bar. I aim to visit Wigan again quiet soon and will make sure the Raven and Anvil are on my list along with a couple more pubs I missed as I didn’t have time before heading to the DW Stadium.

Recently visited Wigan and was pleased to see this pub had re-opened, it had been closed on our previous visits to the town. Staff were friendly, as were the customers. Fine range of real ales, I especially enjoyed the Cross Bay Hurricane.

Recently reopened after having a full refurbishment and taking it back to its traditional roots. Now selling 5 real ales and promoting all of Wigans local breweries.
Very tastefully refurbished with real fires and two unobtrusive televisions. It has retained many of the original features including the tile floor in the entrance corridor.
Serving hearty food produced on the premises. The Macaroni Cheese is particularly good.
Can recommend a visit.

I liked the Raven before it was done up.. a proper old town pub. Now it's just another soulless chav haunt with the usual Wigan thugs.

The sister pub to the Bowling Green on Wigan Lane- they were built at the same time by the same architect, but there the similarities end. This is a circuit pub, offering karaoke, the works. Usually one unadventurous ale to try. There are some nice interior fittings, but the frequently blasting music and close proximity of far better pubs means this place is pretty missable.
