Had a couple of really good nights in here. They have live music and the band was pretty good. It does food too. It's a big place and was pretty lively both nights but there are a couple of unobtrusive bouncers looking on. At one end, there's a pool table and snooker room which we loved. The beer was great. Golden Pippin was lovely and the prices were very reasonable.

We were amazed by the size of this place. Huge main bar with counter in the centre. Large seperate room and snooker room as well.

Friendly Mackem barman and good Cropton 2 Pints.

Word is landlord is trying to get rid as fears of the upcoming opening of Wetherspoons in the Big Angel looms.

well after making 3 more visits in the last couple of days i can now confirm this is the best pub in whitby. for a lot of good reasons, the quality of the beer each pint superb . the choice of the ales, including 1 from the cropton brewery 2 from copper dragon,+at least 6more.the friendliness of the staff, the good sized and reasonable priced food. and of course the location and the view.

Now I shouldnt have liked this pub !! but for some reason when I visited last week I took the plunge.

The viewing varanda was lovely, sat outside drinking some nice guest ales, reading the paper and having a fag it was lovely.... the pub was large and I can see it will be tough to fill for an atmosphere but from a beer perspective I thought it was fine. And what made it stand out is there were 2 micro brewery beers on there so that you were just not Black Sheep or Theakstoned to death.... I would say, take a chance with this one..... after all the view from the veranda is worth it on a summers night !

Ah 'The Shambles'. I can understand naming a watering hole in such a way to reflect what you should expect. I'm thinking 'Shangri-La' or 'Heaven' or 'Paradise Bar' - but the Shambles was exactly what it said on the tin.
If you have a family room, a non-optional family room, do not say 'families welcome' on your a-boards outside when said family room is the one area of the pub where tables are not cleaned, glasses are left on tables, crisps and what looked like prawns or maybe pinks (I didn't inspect too closely) are scattered all over the carpet. The sea view was difficult to enjoy through the filthy windows.
If you are going to be so honest in naming your pub Shambles, rather than saying 'families welcome' on the a-board, could you say 'families as welcome as Gary Glitter at a kids' party'.
Oh yeah - the ale - Length and Line was pretty good - I drank it in three mouthfuls.

After two visits last week, both lunchtime, on Monday and Friday, I feel a bit ambivalent about this pub. The selection and quality of beer was fine, and on the Monday lunchtime, we had a good value meal, the steak and ale pie being superb. Unfortunately, this wasn't repeated on the Friday, the cod we ordered being overdone and being of small size for the money. We did tell the guy serving this, but weren't offered any recompense, the only response being "thanks for letting us know", quite politely I would add. The difference in quality of the meals on different days was quite marked- can only assume different chefs

i notice the station has won another camra pub of the season award, and rightly so. but they may wish to take a small look over their shoulder, because the shambles is on the up.i didnt put on a review after my first visit but i feel obliged after yesterdays afernoon delight. well on a hot sunny day the shambles was heaving ,was it for the harbourside location the friendly barstaff the good choice of reasonably priced food, the free sunday papers or and the big or the choice and quality of the real ale on offer ,i could just manage to count the number of handpumps on both hands , ther were 3 theakstons 2 copper dragon, 2 wold top, 1 york plus the usual n/yorks suspect john smiths.the barman told me the ale changes on a quick basis. so i go for all the reasons.the only downside is they let people smoke on the balcony overlooking the harbour, shame really.as this is my only gripe. it will not suprise me if the camra award makes its way to the other side of the esk in the very near future

Was in yesterday a very busy Saturday afternoon, and was confused, why were the lads hugging each other? did I pick the wrong day to go in or what?

Revisited this pub over the Easter holiday. I quite enjoyed sitting in the conservatory, watching the boats go by and getting quietly drunk on tasty beers. Oh, how an opinion can change!

We called in here last week during a day out in Whitby.

It is a clean and very comfortable pub. I opted for the Theakston Black Bull Bitter which was pretty good. The staff were friendly and efficient and full marks to the barmaid who topped up my pint without me asking.

As previously reported there are great views over the harbour, but that said, I got the feeling that this pub somehow doesnt seem to be quite right for the location.

I cant comment about the food as we had eaten some superb fish and chips from the Magpie chippy on the opposite side of the harbour.

Spotted this pub in the afternoon over the October Half-Term, so I went in with my wife. The bar was not busy and the range of ales looked fair. However, I stood at the bar for what seemed ages and watched the most miserable staff walking around behind the bar. My wife eventually joined me at the bar, said, 'I don't like this place' so we left and visited the Endeavour instead.

Mmmm.... I know it was the goth weekend at the time of my visit so was busy, but the staff were surly, miserable and downright ignorant. As for cleanliness, well, the toilets were disgusting and the whole place looked like it could do with a good clean up. The only redeeming factor was the tiny but very picturesque balcony.

Looks like a loft conversion with beams and wooden floors. Sofas and cafe style tables, newspapers - seems to be aspiring towards the more sophisticated Whitbian. Relaxed atmosphere with a good mix of locals and tourists. The food was good and the beer was well kept. Think there were 6 handpulls on in total.

Six handpumps serving a selection of theakston and copper dragon beers. The copper dragon challanger IPA was acceptable. Good selection of food served. Good sized portions, but overpriced as with many things in this town. Great view from the balcony across the harbour. Watch out for the seagulls!

Now this is a big place, bar in the middle of the room loads of space and a family room all over looking the harbour, meals looked excellent and beer was first class had a pint of Old Perculiar, balcany was busy so didn't get out there but great views, I highly recommend this pub.

Lots of room, good views and bacony.

Family room.....it's a bit sparse and third class compared with the rest of the place.

A really chilled place. I couldn't help but notice the Stannah stair lift on the way in and think it might be more use for me on the way out. A good range of beers and lagers, great background music that's not too loud and a fantastic location to boot. The decor and sofa's add to the realxing, intimate feel of the place. Friendly bar staff too. Seperate family room. They also do food. Well worth a visit.
