Great boozer. Ales were well kept and prices reasonable. Welcoming to a large group of drinkers. Nice and cosy with enough character - best of the bunch in the area. Recommended

Must agree with 'The Oxman' to a large extent. A great place to eat but the beer could be better. Dark Island was average but not unpleasant. Also two Belhaven beers (IPA and St Andrews Ale) which I was not able to try. 6 for the beer, and 7 overall for the excellent qulity of the food

What character, would be more amazing if less emphasis was given to Food and more to the Drinkers. The lady managing the place is a Nutjob!!!

Would agree with previous posters that too much room is given over to eating in this deceptively small pub, leaving very little room for drinkers. It's cosy, flagstoned with a real fire and has a pubby feel due to its decor, but it's hard to see it as a proper boozer a the minute with so much emphasis on attracting tourists (like me) to eat there. Deuchars, 80 Shilling and Theakstons Old Peculiar on pump, but not cheap. Very much a mixed bag. All in all I do like the place and with a little more proportion with both priorities and pricing I'd be happy to call in again.

Smaller than you might think (it was postively claustrophobic on my visit, and it wasn't that busy in there!) Pretty dark too, which makes sense given half of th room is given over to being the 'relaxing eating area'. Perfectly situated too - Royal Mile either way, bridge to Waverley opposite. As such, no real reason not to nip in here for at least a quick St.Andrews Ale

OK pub, very silly beer prices ie 3.30 a pint of Deuchars IPA -which mean`t i was a long time supping one pint.

Okayish boozer. Had the nick-name of 'The Stranglers' for some years after the infamous 'World's End' murders in 1977.

A good, although small, bar on the mile, poular with backpackers and other touries. Watch out, though: staff have been observed turfing drinking regulars off a table so two touries could sit for two hrs with 1 x haggis'n'mash and 2 Cokes!!

Can get busy with tourists but the food is good. The tourists seem to come in, ask for a table for food and then loiter, without drinking, before being seated. Having observed this behaviour, I chose to drink at the bar with my friends and then, after a few ales, asked if they could slot us into a free table for food when one became available. We got our table about 10 minutes later and the service and food was great. It's nice when the staff appreciate helpful customers.
