user reviews of the Star Inn, Lockwood

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Star is situated on a side street that runs parallel to a main road. The interior is a large, single bar. There's a good selection of real ales - Timothy Taylor Landlord, Pictish Brewers Gold, Mallinsons Azacca, U235 & Columbus, Amber Ales Parisian Dream, Thornbridge Wye, Pentrich Soma & Sentinel Orange Stout. The real cider was Udders Orchard Lindley Gold. The cider was very nice. But the Orange Stout was on the turn. A very friendly place that is certainly one of the best of a good selection of hostelries in Huddersfield.

This pub goes straight into my top ten and "must visit" selection as it is a genuinely proper and fabulous boozer with a good real ale offer (from local brewers mainly); very friendly staff and customers and that lovely old feel of an unspoilt and comfortable pub which is well worth the walk from the town centre. We enjoyed a pint of Mallinsons Jack The Lass which like most of their beers was terrific. I didn't see any signs of food in the Star and the opening hours are a bit awkward (5pm weekdays/12 noon Saturday) but you really should not miss this great pub which quite rightly has won many CAMRA awards.

A good selection of ales, nice calm atmosphere on an early Thursday evening. Not open all day during the week.

Was the last pub on our St Paddy's Day crawl and I arrived in a rather dream-like state! The little I can remember about this pub and its beers was positive.

Visited this pub for the first time in March for the beer festival. Another impressive pub with a good range of beers on the handpumps. Good atmosphere for drinkers without the machines a lot of pubs are so keen on. Outside was impressive. A large marquee with handpumps galore down a long bar. I mean loads - about 50 if I remember right!! Friendly staff serving and seating inside too made it a great day out. Two in fact as we came back again. So much choice of well served beers. Some new breweries there too. Fantastic. Lovely pub dog too.

Called in for a couple of pints this lunchtime (Easter Saturday), and the pub was fairly quiet apart from a friendly couple drinking various real ales and a gently snoring dog tucked up in the corner.

It's a ten minute walk from Huddersfield town centre, but well worth the effort. My pints of Marathon Ale from the Six Bells Brewery and Union Ale from the Rugby Brewing Company went down a treat, and that's just sampling two of the bar's 10 handpumps.

Nice, decent, boozer. Wish there were more of 'em!

A derelict back street pub, as recently as 2002, The Star is now a genuine freehouse which is held in high regard on the Huddersfield ale circuit. Owner and landlady, Sam, has created a warm & welcoming traditional community pub, with the emphasis very firmly on the beer. Expect a varied selection of micro brewers' offerings, warm fires, and plently of locals propping up the bar. But don't be surprised if a mini bus pulls up outside to drop of a visiting CAMRA branch! The pub isn't very big, so it can get busy, but its only 5 minutes down the road from the Rat & Ratchet, so it makes a nice little run out of, or into, town. Also, look out for the occaisonal beer festivals - approx. 60 handpulls in the large marquee in the yard, making The Star the best pub festival in the area.

This and the Rat up the road are the two best pubs in Hudds, Strange location but well, well worth the visit - friendly and relaxed. Good range of beers.

Can't believe that no-ones commentated on this pub for over 2 years!
Well, it's still fantastic, with a range of ales I've never seen before, including at the moment a decent selection of milds. Worth noting that they've already gone smokeless. Pure class!

A real pub.

Fantastic ale and friendly staff & locals make this a perfect, unpretetious pub. Worth going miles out to find it, but if you like real beer you will not be disappointed. 10/10

Good Beer and a good crowd. Various CAMRA awards, including Yorkshire Pub of the Year, can't be wrong.

The Star is a FAB place - friendly, no juke box, cute pub dog and an good and varying range of excellently kept beer. 10/10!

Huddersfield is often our destination for a days drinking. Recently we found 'The Star'. Good selection of ales. The Eastwood & Sanders Best is marvellous. Friendly staff, good atmosphere, clean and tidy. Full marks to all.

Excellent, warm & friendly pub with superb quality real ales. Just down the hill from the Rat & Ratchet.
