Came in for Sunday lunch last week and we had a wonderful time. I had the beef and my partner had the lamb. Both were truly excellent . Sadly we had no room for dessert. We did manage a few London Pale Ales !!!
I would recomend it to anyone.

Dropped in today for a quick pint and meal before heading home after a long day at work. Ended up staying way longer than I expected. Nice vibes, cool tunes and friendly locals, helped one old man out with his crossword! Fun day. Will be coming back.

A decent place. Huge beer garden out the back which is a big sell for sure. Can imagine it's rammed in the summer.

2 ales on tap (Deuchars and Blooming Ale). We tried the Deuchars which although tasted reasonable, looked dreadful. No head and slightly murky. Well past its best.

Barman seemed to be working hard but was a little strange with his drinks. I asked for one white wine and one white wine and soda. He started by pouring out 2 full measures of white wine into 2 wine glasses. I said, 'one was a white wine and soda'. He replied, 'yes 2 white wines, one with soda'. I said erm, not exactly. We exchanged a few strange looks with each other and in the end I just let him get on with it. He proceeded to add a small dash/top of soda to one of the the wines. 'That's not a white wine and soda' I said. He smiled and looked confused.

He seemed to know his way around a bar so I can't explain the drink he thinks he served me. Very odd. Friendly enough however.

We ate there with a mixture of thai and classic pub grub. Pretty good generally although the food (and drinks) weren't particularly cheap.

A few big screens in the bar and certainly a decent atmosphere (Grand National was on).

Not sure what I feel about this place. Would happily drop in for a pint or two but probably wouldn't stay all night. Not sure I'd go out of my way to call in either. However, the beer garden is a big draw.

Me and my friends came in to watch the football and couldn't believe the great atmosphere this lively little pub creates. Brilliant bar staff who were fun and made us feel welcome unlike most bars in the Hackney area. We stayed for the live music that came on next and had a great time, would reccommend to anyone. We didn't try the food but it smelt incredible.

Great function room!Just organised a great birthday bash on a saturday night downstairs there. The staff were really helpful, enthusiastic and politely answered any questions we had. Service of food and drinks was speedy and tasted great. They have a huge beer garden too. A brilliant nite was had by all and we are planning our next night there already!

Just been in with my girlfriend for thai lunch. Great value for 2 courses for 4.95 delious love the red curry! given a loyalty card for discount drinks during the day, huge garden a real sun trap, will be back very impressed with how lovely the staff were!!

Truly awful. Clearly never been cleaned before - though doubtful that the permanent excessive over-drinking local fixture types could be cleaned around or even persuaded to be remotely polite.... Bar staff were rude, ignorant and extremely slow. Would not recommend this at all - much better pubs in Angel or Finsbury Park to watch the football!

Went their last friday evening (19/06/2009), had a meal which was delicious. I would recommend the green curry. We followed this with some music in the basement bar, which was really cool. Probably, the best pub in Stokie.

Great bar! they have 6 large sports screens including two in the downstairs venue n they were showing 3 different matches. Food was great and the toilets must have been done up because they were really clean. as the evening progressed there was a dj upstairs and live bands downstairs. ended up there till they closed at 12. my new local i think..!
susie26 - 4 Nov 2008 20:52
havent seen the toilets before but they are quite nice and tidy...look very new...came here for a football match and it was packed...they were showing two different games so im not suprised...i came earlier with a few mates and we managed to find a table to get some food...my god was that filling! its quite odd that you cant order at the bar but well worth it in the end!
alex0101 - 21 Feb 2008 13:32
Toilets have been done up!!!1!!!eleven!!

They still need a bit of a paint job.
LemonGrass - 11 Feb 2008 19:16
dreadful place. we waited for our thai food for over an hour. when it arrived it was alright but more expensive and not nearly as nice as the thai food from the coach and horses round the corner. the toilets are a disgrace. the music was some loud clanky hillbilly rubbish.
if you want amazing great value thai food in a friendly pub go to the coach & horses on stokey high street instead.
loola - 27 Aug 2007 17:06
Good thai food and decent garden, although they seem to shoe-horn more tables in every year. I don't normally bother in the winter.
whatbill - 19 Feb 2007 18:47
craphole of a pub old stokey geezers stay upstairs with cheap elasticated jeans and cheap reebok classics while the wannabe goth/punk/weirdos go downstairs they make marilyn manson look like a pussycat then around 10pm the 80s rejects come in awful place
keirah - 24 Jan 2007 00:58
Great little place. Can be quite crowded at weekends, especially in winter when the garden is closed and when the downstairs part is closed for the occasional private function. Friendly atmosphere and drinks not too overpriced.
Yvette - 2 Jan 2007 16:05
More of that thai food like the coach and horses - how original!

Very cheap and friendly - suits the locals down to the ground.

Second only to Auld Shillelagh, and is better in terms of fantastic beer garden. Shillelagh gets my vote for traditional Irishness, Ryans gets it for making effort on music scene. They are also really friendly for families. My mate arranged a reasonably priced party for his two year old in the downstairs (they are licensced for it) after facing overpriced 'proper' kids places in Stokie. Music generally good and clientele are v friendly too.

Ryans Bar has a great feel to it.Toilets aren't that bad. The Thai food is great value for money. I was there one Saturday about a month ago and thought DJ JP was excellent. I want him to play at a big party I'm organising, but have losted his details. Can anyone help?

great Thai Food, raucous live crowd down the creaky stairs...was terrified when I first saw the venue then we played and it was one of the crackingest sets...really liked this place

anonymous - 18 May 2006 12:30
lovely, draws a slightly 'alternative' crowd especially the punks and rockabillies compared the rest of church street. toilets aren't skanky, they are full of hilarious anecdotes written on the doors. beer garden in the summer is gorgeous and the thai food from next door is worth a go although the chinese chippy down the road is cheaper.
anonymous - 4 Mar 2006 16:32
This is a great pub with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. The Thai food is excellent and they have a comprehensive wine list. They have DJs every weekend night. Every Monday there is an popular open mic night and they have live music playing regularly in the downstairs function room. Great place to go in the summer as well as they have a huge beer garden. One of the best pubs in Stokey

I think Ryans is great, just what you want in your neighbourhood, good value tasty Thai food when you want it, Great garden and general chilled atmosphere even on match day, the game will be on but without any heavy moods. recommended
Bobfilm15 - 24 Jan 2006 18:27
Pretty decent bar, good vibe, nice bar staff, good range of drinks. Is nice and airy with plenty of seating, good crowd, very 'Stokey'. Has a basement you can rent out for parties and gigs, but it's useless for gigs as no one can see anything whatsoever.

My only negative about this place is that it has the most disgusting, skankiest toilets I've ever seen. Absolutely foul.

classybird - 4 Oct 2005 12:27
i mean beer garden. Oops.
uptoeleven - 31 Dec 2004 19:45
Great beer, great food, great food garden, Tattoo John but awful PA - watching live music there is excruciating, playing it even more so.
uptoeleven - 31 Dec 2004 19:44
Good Thai food, good beergarden, friendly staff, Tattoo John from the Alabama 3 is DJing every Sunday. Good place really.
Tomster - 8 Dec 2004 20:15
Great pub, big beer garden, friendly staff and regulars at the bar. Open late, nice food and 2 sofas that are in need of re-covering! Owned by the same people as The Eye. Can hire down stairs for private parties. Regular live music too.
Jaysun - 7 Sep 2004 23:30
Very nice beer garden and friendly staff but not very classy.
anonymous - 8 Jun 2004 23:40
Late licence? - Well they serve till 11.30pm Mon-Thus, till Midnight Fri/Sat, and 11pm Sun, so little later than most, and occasionally later still when bands are on (1 or 2am). Staff and regulars are always friendly, and once you befriend them licencing hours loose meaning! There's often music downstairs (various jam sessions on weeknights and regular band events) and DJs Fri/Sat/Sun, inc. Tattoo John's alternative country set on Sunday. Plus cheapest beers on Church St!
bazz - 25 Feb 2004 15:59
Probably my favourite in Stokey. Great music - happy people and a nice beergarden. Not so useful at the moment but great during the summer.Very enjoyable...it' s a shame that it hasn' t got a late license.
Blune - 27 Jan 2004 17:28
Great place. Friendly staff, great Thai food, and a chilled but happy atmosphere. There is also art on the walls from local artists, which change each month or two. All good. Bands do still play there, (Dodgy played there not too long ago!) though I think they channel them mostly to The Eye now as that's a 'music venue/pub'. You'll find me on one of the two leather sofas!
