Now known as 24 Market Street, a really original name! Ok but nothing special.

Larger than it looks from outside, decent interior, small smoking area to the side. Friendly, helpful barman [landlord?] interested in his ales. There were six ales on tap when we visited, I indulged in the Greene King 'Bo66y', a decent pint.

Not the most apealing of pubs but i pop in now and again for a couple of pints, i had a some nice hobgoblin in there last time i was in, the bar staff are friendly but it does lack some sort of spark but at least its still going.

Going against all natural instincts and even taking into account the "2 for one cocktails between 5pm-10pm" board outside - who in their right mind is drinking cheap cocktails in a town centre pub at 5pm? - we decided to take a bit of a punt on a blind choice rather than the normally well researched decision we usually make.

Should stick to our principles really. Low ceilinged dingy interior, uninspiring choice of Bombardier or Pedigree on tap. Very friendly and polite barman, though, which was good. Several miserable looking punters dotted throughout and drinking alone, general air of despondancy about the place, albeit at 5.30pm on a Saturday teatime. Grim, but a couple of extra points for the barman.

A perfect example of how great historic City pubs were destroyed by brewerys in the 90s. For the over 25s this place is pretty awful. Bouncers at the door says it all. Staff have difficulty looking you in the eye which is understandable given the quality of the beer they are serving. I'm sure the place is great for dancing but not for casual drinker.

A nice enough town pub from the exterior; Georgian facade, pained black and white. It has a beer patio on the street. It has been 10 years since my last visit and the interior looked fine enough, but i was straight in and straight out to the patio area. Service was functional. It was busy enough for a Saturday daytime, but the mystery plays were on in Lichfield, so the town was a bit more packed than usual.

The beer was the usual stuff, with Pedigree and London Pride on handpull. Not ny favourites, so had a swift half and moved on.

I read some of the comments above and think well they must be doing something right they now have been given a 4am licence on a friday and saturday night so if it was full of trouble surely they wouldn't have got it think some of the statements above are probably from ex employees or people ( dick heads who cant get in ) its still the best and most popular in lichfield

I'd rather go drinking in the Trent and Mersey Canal than Scales. What a dump.

Not being in this pub for a few months i must agree with certain people on this site, example "flea" any pub attracts dickheads but i feel like the doorstaff at scales have it under control. I must disagree with montella tho as i think the music at scales is great but then everyone has their own tastes! As an overall rating this pub is well worth a visit on a night out whether its during the week or weekend. Keep up the good work scales

I like it here..... lets face it, ANYwhere in ANYtown will attract dickheads on a weekend, but this is a nicer place to go than the likes of those mentalist-only places like The Acorn, Lloyds or The Crown (nee: the Hogshead).

Your facts are wrong montella the rope is to keep the que in order because its so busy.I go there every weekend and have a great time they play chart and cheese type music which tends to keep the young piss heads out the staff are friendly and the door staff very polite.Last year they won best pub as voted by the people of lichfield.

A pretty horrific establishment in all honesty:

Tacky disco music on a weekend.

Rude, ignorant staff (especially on the door)

And you can always be sure of there being at least several drunken idiots strolling around the place.

The infamous red 'VIP' rope situated outside the entrance always makes me laugh though - just completely unnecessary.

One to avoid.

Good pint, sexy barmen, well worth a visit on Friday night in Lichfield!

gotta agree with above statement, although I would also say avoid it on Saturday lunchtime too as its full of gobby tossers looking for a fight.

Unfortunately, this pub was ruined by a refit several years ago. Also generally full of little yobs, hence the need for gorillas on the door at weekends! Still o.k for a lunchtime drink though, and serves o.k beer.
