Yet another change of name for this place "Shack 68" is a bit naff just like the pub.

I have not been in this pub for many a moon so I was interesting to go in and have a look round since its name change. The décor is completely different and it has obviously had a bit of money spent on it so it looks quite good. However, when I walked in at nine o’clock on a Saturday night, I found only four people at the bar. The atmosphere was somewhat lacking. There was also a lack of real ale as they had all gone off and this was very disappointing. The upstairs room is now given over to a function room, having been full of pool tables the last time I entered. This is where I spent most of the evening as I had been invited to a function there. The bloke behind the bar was not the most cheerful of chaps and seemed to disappear more often than not meaning that punters had to wait quite a while to be served. This place is normally rammed on a rugby day but I will not be looking to come back in a hurry.

The Rugby Tavern - now called The Garryowen is under new management
Jason and Steve want to welcome you to the pub - and look forward to meeting you, and hearing your views on how we can create a fun community pub that builds on the exisiting rugby client base and also encourages all others to frequent the premises.
We want this pub to be a great place to have a beer and relax - come and see us soon!

The perfect venue for a group after Rugby 7s.The live band on Saturday night was top class. The service behind the bar was very good with all the bar staff having a laugh under preasure.I think there must be a change of management in this pub because its 20 times better that my last visit. The larger now tastes good and chilled. The glasses are also clean. We will be back for the world cup games in June.Well worth a visit.

I visited this pub on the Sauurday of the Rugby 7s in May.I was very impressed with the service and the way the pub was manadged.I seen a mayo flag on the ceiling so there must be a mayo connection. It was nice to see all the weekly sport advertised on the chalk boards.Someone has gone to great effort on the world cup match plan behind the bar it looks great. The bar staff were very friendly and helpfull to my wife on her wine choice.I will be back for more next year when I visit London again.

First went here a couple of months ago one Friday evening, walked in and thought it looked alright, then was short changed at the bar.
Thought it a genuine accident until my friend went up for the next round and he also got short changed. Had to go there for an event a little while after this and again got short changed! Another friend was in there one night last week and the same thing happened to him, the thing is he noticed (as did I previously) that they ring in a smaller amount into the till (say your round is £6.80, you give them £20 note, they enter that you gave them £10 in the till) then they actually hold back the extra change and wait until you notice and prompt them to give your change!!
Definitley a fix! Be very careful.

Dreadful place. At noon there are no real ales on as "we have run out" ? This is a common occurrence at noon with no customers. Surely they should know from the day before that the beer is running low and order accordingly. May well be better on rugby could hardly be worse.
nickthefish - 23 Jun 2009 19:12
Garryowen is a town in Limerick, Christ on a bike !!
Davton - 22 Dec 2008 21:15
Now called the Garry Owen. is the new owner a marine, ex marine or just watches too many american war movies. there is definatly nothing "garryowen" about this place. just another souped up chav magnet, something twickenham already has in spadefuls. shame as the site is one of the best in town.
kiwiphil - 24 Oct 2008 15:40
This place is now called the Garry Owen and it has had an extensive makeover.

Greene King IPA and Courage Best are available alongside various standard lagers whilst you watch Sky or Setanta on one of the 4 plasma screens. There is also live music at the weekends.

Some outside seating can be found at the front of the pub just off the main road.

I couldn’t really get settled in here as a game had just finished at Twickenham and it was packed with rugger buggers!
Strongers - 22 Oct 2008 09:02
Quite a different beast to what it used to be like. It's now all posh seating, emphasis on food and the pool tables upstairs have gone to be replaced by an extra drinking/eating space. Boring real ales on draught still but the place was busy and going great guns on the Sunday carvery lunch when I've visited. They even have regular live music with an Irish trad session on Sundays between 5 and 8. Not a stand-up, rowdy boozer but something very Twickenham!
WeekendRebel - 13 Oct 2008 18:08
This place used to be a dodgy old man's pub that stank of smoke and stale beer. It has recently been refurbished, but as I discovered, you can't polish a turd!
Overpriced drinks, the atmosphere of a goldfish bowl, unfriendly staff, not to mention the dodgy regulars who haunt the place like they have nothing better to do (they don't!).
I'm sure on a rugby day this is a jolly pub with a good atmosphere, but don't go there, there are much better pubs nearby.
ilikebeer7 - 3 Oct 2008 19:31
Must add, i was dissapointed to see the place closed for the Bon Jovi concert and when me and my brother looked inside, it had seemed as though they are starting work on the place as advertised i just hope it dont become another posh pub!
waspsno1fan - 6 Jul 2008 01:17
I like this pub on a day when something is happening at the a wasps and MAJOR england fan, i attend nearly every game played there, and this is the pub for me, i have been goin there for the last five years and seen the great bunch of staff go, when the last manager took over, and he bought in some right muppets, but kept a few "ORIGINALS" on. the New boss however has made this place wonderful again, with the introduction of a marque with a live band on match days....and the staff on the back bar are brill, especially because there are two lads who have been kept on from the previous bosses, great crack, and some beautiful girls work there too! MORE IMPORTANTLY, GREAT SERVICE AND SCREENS EVERYWHERE! 10/10
waspsno1fan - 6 Jul 2008 01:13
cool place on rugger days. been down to twickenham twice this year for sevens and heineken cup. in here both times and had a good time. bars everywhere front and back so no problem getting pints. food pretty good too. loads of pretty bar staff which is always nice!!
fostersboy13 - 15 Jun 2008 11:29
We were in here for Guiness final a few weeks ago- had a brilliant time(apart from the result!). The band after in marquee was magic. Only place in Twickenham which seems to make an effort for the fans after the match not just before. Will be back(hopefully)
twickers_drinker - 15 Jun 2008 11:03
been going to this place for a while now, especially on Rugby days- they've recently been taken over apparently and wow!! what a difference. On match days is pure quality, they put on live music in a marquee in their car park and have bars/barbeques outside front an rear. Brilliant crack-especially when the irish are playing!!
twickers_drinker - 25 May 2008 12:53
Had a great time here, lovely homecooked food and free bar snacks most evenings - nice touch! Coming back next week for karaoke.
fireball2 - 6 Sep 2007 13:27
New landlord - new ideas - new pub menu - new prices! Lovely pub with a nice atmosphere. Very clean. Wonderful "home cooked" food. What more can I say? Definitely my local!!
byrne2002 - 10 Jul 2007 22:06
Fantastic pub. There are two young somewhat fit barman who work over the weekend who always serve with a smile. One guy who works during the week it looks like is there for equal opportunities...a little harsh to say i no. Could do with more musical nights and also it is a bit pricey. But you pay for what u get- a welcoming pub.
sarahjane83 - 19 Apr 2007 00:17
This may be close to the rugby ground at Twickenham, and it may have 'rugby' in its name, but staff have never showed the slightest commitment to the game. Yesterday, a major cup final at Twickenham, with many thousands of fans including Welsh visitors, saw the "Rugby" Tavern electing to show............. the football. Oh, but they also seemed very happy to take match-goers' money before and after the game itself. Shame on you.... it'd never happen in Cardiff, Edinburgh nor Dublin.
Lynne - 16 Apr 2007 10:45
Nice Guinness in here. Had a good laugh with the staff/landlord. better inside than you would imagine.
tomas.aquinas - 24 Jan 2007 13:03
Fantastic pub. The best in Twickers. Barking mad landlord and fantastic staff.

I have never seen so many pumps on the bar. Bit pricey, compared to the fighting pubs over the road but worth it.

Magic Pub! Friendly, Welcoming, Best Fosters for miles. Magners on Draft, Proddie Corner, Top Bar staff. Magic Guvnor, Best pub in Twickenham. FACT.
Bangers - 4 Sep 2006 20:35
A change from the 'posher' Twickenham drinkeries! Good for watching the sport live on Tv. Do they still have those tall 'swivelling' bar stools..? A boon! TJ
TeeJay - 21 Aug 2006 17:24
Excellent pub on rugby days, assuming you're going to the game.

Otherwise, smokey and a regular's bar.
Ladril_Leafstar - 31 Jul 2006 12:39
A very odd pub, especially compared to the others in Twickenham. The fact that it is at the bottom of an office block does it give it the look of a dodgy pub on an estate as the earlier person commented. It's not that bad inside though.
TheGP - 26 Aug 2005 09:04
It's a bit skanky and quiet but pretty inoffensive. Having said that, there are many more pubs in Twickenham I would visit first. Has the feel of an estate pub which is a tragedy given its location. Yet another example of utterly wasted potential.
Cleversaz - 2 May 2005 14:53
I must disagree, the irish bar men love our immitations of their accent!! and even give us fag money haha!
Pert little bottoms too haha
Camrur - 24 Mar 2005 18:24
Whoops 'Magners' - sorry.

Mum - 25 Feb 2005 19:13
Mangers is also sold in the Vic (Isleworth) and I bet its cheaper. Last time I was in this pub I felt like I had four heads. Let hope it can improve.
Mum - 25 Feb 2005 19:11
Once got kicked out (stone cold sober) for double checking the price of a drink at 3 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon.
Horrible pub, except on match days.
TRW - 12 Dec 2004 21:09
A place for a pint before or after a rugby match at Twickers and ALL the other pubs are TOO full. Otherwise, its a dreadful advertisement for the hotel industry. Prime location too. Sad, sad, sad.
Colin Oxley - 18 Nov 2004 20:52
Don't go in here if you are English - this Pubis for the sons of Erin only (if you know what I mean)

The English Pub Ghost - 5 Sep 2004 21:43
Great crack here on match days..They also serve pint btls of magners..Heaven..
to hell or connacht - 16 Apr 2004 14:05
The pubs is far too smokey, has been for several years and why should you have to ask for the extractor to be turned on! Not a very good pub but slightly less foul than the Cabbage Patch.
andrew1961 - 25 Jan 2004 12:58
Very ordinary pub. Ordinary in every way and not worth a visit unless you've been to every other pub in the area and want to try something else.
Much better to cross the road to The Cabbage
anonymous - 6 Jan 2004 10:09
No beer worthy of the name.
Jim - 2 Dec 2003 02:18
Good pub. Nice and friendly staff. if u have any problems just go and ask the staff.
steve - 27 Nov 2003 11:40
Three pool tables upstairs, not two.

If it's smokey, just ask for the extractor to be put on, it'll be smoke-free in 30 seconds. Quite a simple task really.

lionstour - 9 Sep 2003 12:47
Top pub for a drink before a match at twickers. Cant beat the rugby atmosphere. The comments below are from blokes but I'm sure they are really girls!!!
Andy - 16 May 2003 11:14
It's very very quiet (except on Rugby days) - which can be a good thing! Very smokey downstairs, but 3(you say 2) pool tables upstairs - a pound a go. It does now have a big screen downstairs. I'd say 6/10
