user reviews of Bar Malden, New Malden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A very non descript pub from the outside which is located near the station. A fair sized bar with a large comfortable lounge. It was rather quiet when I was in there on a mid Saturday afternoon. There was a reasonable selection of real ales on the bar.
boozers_knows - 27 Oct 2011 13:58
Its absolutely disgusting - last time we ate there, we asked what the "special sausages" on the menu were. The waiter asked the chef and even he didn't know!

But that was a while ago. What we have now is a nasty, vomit-surrounded mess. I walked past it from the train station at around midnight on Saturday, avoiding the lumps of sick, to be met by a guy being held up by his mates as he threw up outside the pub. When they have live music, the racket down the entire High Street is dreadful.
LadyFuschia - 20 Jul 2010 12:00
Actually does a fair range of beers. It's dangerously close to being a Wetherspoons at a higher price though given all the posters around the place but will give another go when around the area.
Oakman100 - 27 Jan 2010 19:41
Situated as it is in the podium of a large 70's office block, this place certainly will not win any awards for character. Despite some of the previous reviews however, my visit on Sunday afternoon was quite pleasant and the pub and clientele were perfectly civilised. I do accept however that pubs can be very different places at different times.
The front entrance leads to a wooden floored area with a few traditional four seater tables plus longer tables with bench seats. Up a couple of steps to the main room with the bar on the side wall. A plasma on the end wall was showing football. There are a couple of alcoves off the main area offering seclusion.
A surprising range, I felt, Jennings Cross Buttock (odd name!), Ringwood Porter, Wychwood Hobgoblin and Brakspears Bitter, discounted at 1.99.
It's part of the Marstons Taverns chain, and I did feel that a lot of the adverts around for cheap food and drink deals gave a bit of a 'Spoons feel to the place.
Nevertheless I felt the place fine for an afternoon pint and I'd pop in again.

Where does one begin with this place ? Full of kids at weekends , young girls with large expanses of flesh showing , young guys consuming vast quantities of alcohol as they ogle all that flesh , toilets that really I wouldnt let my dog use , sitting underneath a huge office block with a lovely view of the shitty railway bridge & Tesco Express . Force 9 gale blowing outside if you want a fag ( but I'm nothing if not fair & the manager cant do much about the weather ) & more often than not , particularly at the weekend , a long wait to be served at the bar only to then be told that the beer I want is unavailable . Apart from all that , it's great ! Well maybe that's a bit of an overstatement ......... on second thoughts it's the pits . Handy for the bus stop though .

Hi pubsentry, no I didnt enjoy it, in fact if I go into that hole again I will do the honourable thing and order a service revolver and a bottle of Guiness!
Wetherspoons at Raynes Park rools!
chav_hater - 5 Jan 2009 23:09
chav_hater's comments remind me of what I wrote on 3 July (see below). It's a recurring theme: there's no duty manager available. This is no way to run a pub; someone should be there to take responsibility at all times.
Trev - 5 Jan 2009 18:52
But - did you like the place, chav ?
pubsentry - 5 Jan 2009 12:06
This place is a toilet,at the weekend its full of chavs effing and blinding everywhere, spitting all over the place when they smoke outside. The toilets (mens) are disgusting, daubed in graffiti, non existent loo seats, and toilet roll thats left on the floor and covered in peoples bodily fluids, I assume this is because the loo roll dispenser has been torn off the wall by one of the boneheads and never been replaced, the bar staff seem happy & cheerful enough though. The lager if they havnt run out (again) is quite reasonably priced as is some of the food. I have never seen a manager in there perhaps thats why the place has door staff at the weekends either to keep him in or out! This could be a great bar but needs to be managed more effectivley--to be avoided Fri Sat & Sunday eves-if you do go there then wear a protective suit to avoid the spit!
chav_hater - 5 Jan 2009 11:44
wat a shame the assistant manager left???gud lad always nice and friendly to customers. diamond geezer!
newmaldenlad - 4 Nov 2008 14:31
good night out, fun, lively, decent cask, popped in on the way home, I'll be back
hopsnmalt - 22 Sep 2008 10:40
Classic! "The Best pub on the High Street." It's the only sodding pub on the High Street you mug.
chum38 - 20 Sep 2008 15:07
Hmmmm me thinks the last comment was posted by the landlord.Don't you?
Pub is ok ,most lively in New Malden. But can be full of chavs. Have often seen drunk girls with skirts up round their heads outside this pub. Must be a local sport. Its good when their pretty, but some beasts drink there-not so nice.
beerinspector - 8 Aug 2008 20:06
I must desagree with Jimmygenius's comments about Bar Malden. On the recent occassion me and my husband have visited the pub and we think it's fantastic.Great food, skilled and friendly staff and you can't go wrong with real ales ether. We have also spotted a new landlord and he seems to be much more friendly than the previous miserable one...Definitely the best pub on the high street, highly recommended to visit.
roxy47 - 23 Jul 2008 20:56
This has not been a pub for very long, having been an Indian restaurant until a few years ago. But although it has no pedigree as a pub, it always does some decent ales. On a recent visit it had on both Jennings Cumberland ale and Sneck Lifter. I had the Sneck Lifter which was excellent. This is not the sort of place you would want to seek out, but in my view it serves the best ale in New Malden High Street, and definitely worth dropping into if you happen to be passing.
RexRattus - 8 Jul 2008 23:10
WHAT A DIVE! I'm sorry but this place really is the pits now. It looks ok from the outside but half the staff are reluctant to do their jobs, they kick you out and hassle you out ten minutes after they close, and the staff are quite rude at times, often provoking rude responses from customers who otherwise are no bother. If i pay 3 for a pint i expect to be given the chance to finish it!!!

Also Sean is not a great manager otherwise he's start barring the psychopaths who used to drink in The Railway before they got barred from there (and how mental do you have to be to get kicked out of there!). Nice one Sean, i really enjoy drinking in the same place as a lunatic who once went to prison for attempted murder and serious ABH!Of course psychos like that only hang around with nutters so well done to Sean for letting them make it their local. In future i shall stick to the Royal Oak.

Lastly there are some really dodgy looking barflys in that place, and why is it old soaks like that have ropey looking moustaches?

Honestly, this could have been a half decent place but nobody seems to know how to run it properly and its not cheap either. Sean, employing rude staff certainly isn't the way forward and letting people drink without getting hassled either by your staff or headcases would be a nice start!
Jimmygenius - 8 Jul 2008 20:52
The staff tried to stop serving food early tonight (8:30) despite the chalkboard outside still saying food till 9. When people complained that they were just choosing what they wanted to eat at that moment, the staff first said the chef had already gone home; then said there was no duty manager on as he/she had gone home too; and then miraculously changed their minds, put the menus back out, took orders, and served up some delicious meals! It was a mystery what was going on, but the end result was friendly staff, nice drinks, good value, great food - but apparently a complete lack of proper management.
Trev - 3 Jul 2008 00:58
Closest there is to a Wetherspoons-type pub in New Malden without being a Wetherspoons! Nice beers. Staff went out of their way to provide me with information when I enquired about food. I'm told there are nights when it's best avoided, and the place doesn't have much character, but the food-drink-staff can't be faulted.
Trev - 18 May 2008 20:26
Sean is a ledgend, remember him from The Royal Oak, good place for a Friday night with the lads, well kept Pedigree
cask_king - 15 May 2008 16:06
Marstons beers: Pedigree, Sun Bright, Burton Bitter and Sneck Lifter. Had all apart from the Burton and they were all good. Sneck Lifter very nice.

Modern type of pub, nothing too special but decent enough for a pint and convenient for the station. Bus gets you to Worcester Park station in 7 minutes so also good for those like me in the Epsom direction.
GuideDogSaint - 28 Mar 2008 00:19
The new Railway.
chum38 - 6 Jan 2008 10:42
Bar Malden is not my idea of the authentic British Pub but I walked through the doors and was greeted with the biggest smile and a hearty welcome, I was served by a pleasant staff, a truly welcoming environment being near the train station is a added plus. The ale was ok not the best but for customer services the score big with me.
wumpscut - 10 Dec 2007 16:10
Handy location by the train station wind howls around the front. Beer is ok,bit pricey. Too modern of a layout though.
JohnnydeWolf - 19 Sep 2007 17:16
Great pub with great locals, just a shame about the manager!
anonymous - 30 Jul 2007 14:37
This used to be a really good pub, but since the make over it is now soleless, smokey, flat beer serving chain pub.

disappointing.
woodiesregular - 13 Apr 2007 16:54
The best pub in New Malden, although there aren't many to choose from. Gets quite busy on Friday nights but there's never usually a problem getting a seat through the week. The non-smoking area now seems to be the whole "lower" floor, with the bar area still allowing smoking. There are a few comfy sofas dotted around and generally the place feels clean and well looked after. The toilets are, as someone else said, excellent for a pub like this.
kingston_toon - 17 Jan 2007 17:11
Pretty good pub. Best real ale selection in NM and serves good food at reasonable prices. Music needs sorting out at weekends.
drinkstable - 28 Mar 2006 19:30
Unusual, ambience-free pub. Has a touch of Iceland (the supermarket) about it with the offers and deals-on-meals which seem plastered everywhere. The usual assortment of burger-style, high-fat grub and all served by expressionless staff. The manager has the air of a spikey deputy Head: "Oy, Drew, I can see you at the back of the class sniggering!" A place to go if your train is delayed, I guess.
Nancy_Drew - 13 Feb 2006 19:00
this is a good bar for a relaxing drink, quite a atmospheric bar depending on who your with... toilets are clean and nice despite having to make a tricky journey upstairs to use them. Nice cubicles! Staff are friendly, people are not the scummy type and its not that smokey, I've been in worse...
robreyes - 11 Jan 2006 16:07
The real ales are well looked after, but staff are not as welcoming as they could be, especially at closing time. Very smokey pub. Non-smoking area is a joke! Two tables at the back of the pub next to all the commuter smokers. Not a place to eat if you want to taste anything other than smoke!
Harlequins - 1 Dec 2005 12:28
The manger here dosen't like customers - he can piss you off just by looking at you- the food is overpriced using cheap bulk buy ingredients
anonymous - 23 Jul 2005 15:19
PLastic Pub for Plastic People, Upstairs Kharzi DO WHAT!!! Whoever designed it needs cutting.
grasscutter - 9 May 2005 08:38
The Manager (The Proclaimer) has perfected the art of scowling at the punters to perfection. None of the bar staff smile but maybe they're sick of The Proclaimer scowling at them too. You have to go upstairs to the toilet which can cause a few problems. Also there's a weird gingerbread smell going up the stairs.......?
rooney43 - 25 Apr 2005 14:13
Not a bad boozer but everything seems to be "relentless" What is that chef called " silly bollocks" all about. He talks a pile of shite!
carlberg13 - 21 Apr 2005 11:46
Pros:
Adnams Broadside! Reasonably clean boozer with very good bar and table service. No smoking/dining area.
Cons:
Bar area gets very smoky.
kryten - 14 Feb 2005 08:02
pub is ok better than most in the area, The Royal Oak Still the best ever
Paddy86 - 27 Jan 2005 14:18
Don't like the harrassment you get come 23.15 when you practically have the beer snatched out of your hand. Floor service is nice though and the staff are friendly up to 23.00! New Malden is a pile of sad old arse supported by a dearth of decent pubs. And I live there!
Jane - 17 Aug 2004 11:17
great pub great staff great service i go every day the only pub in newmalden to go
trevor - [email protected] - 3 Aug 2004 23:27
Pretty ok pub I thought, decent range of real beer on tap. Busy as heck.
Nige - 5 Jul 2004 12:59
A commuter pub for commuter types. That's about all I can say about Bar Malden. To be fair, the food is OK, but this is a characterless pub which hardly invites you to spend a leisurely evening there. The staff there hardly give the warmest of welcomes, least of all at 23:00 (on the dot) when they throw open all the doors (even in the depths of winter) and all but drag the patrons out by the hair. It's very much a convenience pub, and woe betide the punters if they inconvenience the staff!
Andy P - 17 May 2004 08:53
Third best pub in New Malden heh?? That's like saying Geoge W is the third best memeber of the Bush Family.. The pub is crap.
Example, nobody knows how to poor a pint of Guiness here, not even the manager. Full of filthy workmen in there dirty work clothes, not nice on a Friday evening...However the young ladies who take orders at the tables are excellent.
Andy - 13 May 2004 14:43
Great bar, great music, great bar staff, and floor service. Superb!!!
anonymous - 6 Mar 2004 23:33
This is the third best pub in New Malden, after the Royal Oak and Woodies. However, it does have the happy advantage of being closest to my house so is often frequented by my custom. They need to make the Hoegaarden a bit cheaper though.
James - 17 Feb 2004 16:29
not the best in new malden, that has to be the royal oak. It's better than bobos and the tavern but it's straight out of ikea and nothing like a nice traditional pub.
Stamina Josh - 4 Feb 2004 17:09
Agree this is the best pub in NM, with good selection of beers. They're a bit OTT on hassling everyone out at closing time though. Happy to leave by 23:20 (as per our strange licensing laws) but be nice if they didn't open all the doors at 22:55 in the middle of winter to encourage us! Leaves an unwelcoming taste after an otherwise good night.
Barnso - 27 Jan 2004 12:40
This is the best place to go in New Malden. Great atmosphere, and lovely barstaff. Nice selection of beers and ales. Also, Vodka Redbull in a jug! The only way to go...
Andy - 19 Jan 2004 18:02
Great bar, great staff, floor service for food and drink. Great.
anonymous - 15 Dec 2003 19:10
I LVE THIS BAR!!! By far the nicest place in New Malden, beats The Railway with their bling bling rude boys. If your looking for a good night here is the place to go, gets busy at the weekend so get there early to get a spot but well worth the trip!
Siobhan - 29 Sep 2003 14:10
Amazing pub, clean and tidy, friendly and quiet. The best service I have come across, table service drinks and food are perfect. I would say it was the best in New Malden. Decorated really well too.
jay - 30 Jun 2003 13:35
Its been painted green today (29/4/3).
Steve - 30 Apr 2003 15:11
I found this pub a bit too full of 'commuter belt people', if you know what I mean. Also I'm sorry, but I can't do pubs where you can't smoke at the bar, especially when there's no where else to stand! Nice beer though.
JBH - 9 Jan 2003 13:34
Fantastic pub.Great wine offer and surprisingly good food. Nice to relax in.
Amy Soper - 5 Aug 2002 12:56
