Went in for a midweek family meal.

We were heartily welcomed and the chap looked after us well throughout our visit. Also a huge thumbs up was that we all enjoyed our food.

However.......

We were attracted by the large sign advertising meals from £4.99 but when we were seated, the menus were nothing like that price. However when we asked, we were brought the Value Menu. Apologies were given that the Value Menu wasn't with the more expensive menus on the table. Several other groups came in and had to ask for the Value Menu and received similar apologies. I may be over cynical but.......

At the bar, the only real ale was Greene King IPA so I opted for a pint of lime and soda. However, there was no draught soda water so it would mean at least two mixer sized bottles. I opted for a pint of diet coke/lemonade mix which really confused the barstaff. Both the diet coke and lemonade came from plastic bottles.

To sum up The Crab - they have contactless payment but no draught soft drinks.

tried this place twice in last week,it is more of a food place, but have bar at back, enjoyed a goddards scrumdiggity, but on 2nd visit, saturday night they had run out of real ale!

Had a look in this pub, but it seemed to be a restaurant, so I didn't actually have a beer.
A shame, as the last time that I was in here, was in 1970, enjoying a post IOW festival beer or two. I was hoping to have an ale and let my mind go on a nostalgic trip, but it wasn't to be. I guess things change over 43 years.

A very unusual thatched pub in the middle of Shanklin old village. The lounge is on various levels and initially it is difficult to find the bar! There is loads of comfortable seating but the bar only had 2 real ales but one was a local beer Goddard's Scrumdiggity Ale.

This pub really is an excellent choice in this popular tourist area. Quick, efficient service from friendly staff and tasty food. A bonus on our visit was the lack of traffic as the road was closed further along, making sitting outside on a sunny lunchtime even more enjoyable.

Had a couple of above average pints of Greene King Abbot Ale and an excellent rump steak. The service was first rate.

Just got back from a great weekend in Shanklin. We enjoyed a couple at the Crab Inn. A very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Plus there is a pool table!

Nice exterior and location - generic looking place inside. A family establishment. Had Sunday lunch - satisfactory. The pint of Goddards Bitter was fine. Best part of it was the young lady who served us. Lovely.

We did think of eating here but walked out when we saw only GK IPA on offer. The Goddards clip was turned round. The locals we spoke to were not impressed with the quality of beer in here and tended to avoid the place.

Visited The Crab twice in the last week with my partner. Excellent service and pleasant staff, the young lady in charge of the running of the restaurant was very helpful and friendly. Two very pleasant evenings spent in a lovely atmosphere.

Excellent range of reasonably priced and tasty food - but beer distinctly average with very limited choice. Good choice of wines.

went to The Crab last week, and it cannot be faulted really, the food was excellent, the beer was good (Goddards Special) and the service was absolutely top notch, really friendly staff made our visit a pleasure.

Will definately pop in again next time in in Shanklin

Nice enough pub, good food offering but fairly standard draught beer selection

Lovely pub with character, food very good, fast service only drink usual brands so no problems

Both the beer and food are reasonably priced, but the beer isn't that great so wouldnt go in there if I just want a pint(shame as Greene King do some good ales, but they don't stock them!),and the food at best average. You will do better eating across the road, or wandering down the Chine Inn or King Harry if you just want a pint.

Went here at Easter 2007 with my Mum as a treat, very manic, soup cold, mussels overcooked, when complained returned same plate of food. V.disappointing as looked good from outside.

very pretty pub...........landlord friendly too........apparently been the same inside for over 15 years now and is part of a chain. The food was excellent and served very quickly by the friendly waitress. Don't drink beer but noticed the cask mark thingy on the bar so can't be too bad. Agree about the awful sign.

This pub has been ruined! The outside may still look traditional (except for Greene King putting up their own sign instead of traditional pub sign) but as soon as you step inside you're inside a pubs version of McDonalds! The old interior has been gutted and it now looks like it belongs in Vegas or somewhere as an American version of a "traditional" english pub. Yes, its now part of a chain!

The beer is not very good either.

One for the day-trippers after a meal, but not a drink!

Pretty pub featured on the jigsaws, chocolate boxes etc. Not a good pub for beer though.

My family and I felt really welcome in here, it's a beautiful place with nice food and lovely friendly staff. Was a bit annoyed that had to order food seperately but i can live with that!
Will defo be going back asap when money permits another holiday - instead will be content with my print of the pub on the wall! lol

A very pretty pub, supposedly the most photo'd pub in the country. But Inside is decidely average, the beer is a bit poor, and judging by the dodgey uniforms is part of some chain. The whole order food seperatley is as stated below a bit old hat. and the Crab sandwich was a bit poor. It is nice to sit in the beer garden when the sun is shinning but for decent food and a better pint and more atmosphere there is a great pub across the road, go there instead.
cutch - 18 Aug 2005 14:24
On a recent visit I enjoyed a trio of mushrooms meal which was really very good, the crab sandwich too is excellent. Good friendly staff and that most important quality - fast service when busy. The only downer is this unnecessary system where you need to go through tow seperate transactions to order food and beer, as they are unable to take drink orders at the food service point, and vice versa. How silly, most pubs have that sorted these days.

The 'Tourist pub' in Old Shanklin, this pub has suffered from its success over the years. It's now a bland branch of the Laurel Pub Co, without the benefits of the home cooking that it used to enjoy - ok for a pint or two, the food is ok, but could be (was) better
