Last stop of the night in Nottingham was this pub/music venue. It's clearly meant for a late night crowd, with very little seating. In fact, I think it hadn't long opened on my arrival at 6:30pm. A band was setting up in the rear room, at which I took a little peep on the way to the gents toilets, where trying to have a pee was extremely difficult in the pitch black. But, maybe that's all part of the rockers experience. Ales were Imperial Classic Bitter & Babbi (described as a chocolate fudge brownie stout) & Castle Rock Screech Owl. The cider was Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. Not the worst pub I'd been to during the day by far.

At the back is "The Maze", a small, intimate music venue. There's comfortable seating along one side which is great, especially as you could probably only squeeze about 200 people in so I imagine you would still be able to see ok. There's a bar in the room at the front and another one in the music venue itself, both selling the same beers - a good range of Castle Rock beers (including a fantastic mild) and Cider/Perry. The bar at the front is adorned with photo's of famous musicians and the place is definitely for the gig-goer, however, I'd go back there for a pint - just for the quality of the beer.

Big sign calling it the Maze, but the window etchings pointed it to its former name. Now a music venue. Mkes a change from a gastropub conversion or tesco direct. First ever castle rock pint and i got a loyalty card. Unique.

Decent place for live music, but not really as a pub: it's dark, cramped, pricy and doesn't open until at least 6 in the evening. The staff are nice, but if there's something on in the back room (there usually is) you can feel your life slipping away while you wait to get served in the front (the pub area). Very good selection of all sorts of beers, however, and a good range of spirits. Could do worse on Mansfield Rd, but then again could do a lot better.

Sorry to be picky but Kwak is from Belgium. If anyone is interested, the distinctive glass was developed a couple of hundred years ago so coach drivers could hang it up it in their coaches without fear of it being spilt. They used to think of everything in those days - why don't Fords come with a pint glass holder?

The Polish Kwak has the most bizarre glass, with a rounded bulbous bottom that requires a wooden sort of test tube holder to stand it up in. I could do with a bigger one to keep me upright.
A fantastic range of beers, British and continental, to accompany a good crowd of people and very friendly staff. Decent food if you just want a snack.
Open until midnight Thurs-Sat and 11.30pm on Sundays (and may be late during the week too). It's the last stop on the Mansfield Road crawl, or first depending which end you start, but the extra hour usually means it's the last.
Has the Maze attached at the back for live music and same decent beers. Has some really good folk and Americana, in an intimate space (but not particularly small). I wish I could get down there more often.
Looks horrible from the outside but inside is fab.

4 handpumps and an unbelivable variety of continental beer (no not Stella). Double one over the eight stickers for students means only 4 pints needed until free one. JHB, Abbot, Castle Rock Hemlock are regulars.
