Dropped by after long walk wanting a decent pint and a good sandwich or two: didn't get either. Very poor pint of Special plus two OK Scotch eggs from the bar that had clearly not been properly cooled in running cold water (grey/brown rings around the yolk). OK basket of chips. But what kind of pub doesn't do sandwiches? Cold, no atmosphere; usual bunch of boring saddo drunks at the bar talking sh!te. Wish I'd spent money elsewhere. Young barman was nice and helpful.

Nice pub but beer I had was mixed. Youngs was good but the Tribute had some diacetyl.

Seems to charge more for beer than other pubs in Richmond - even other Youngs pubs. Bar staff often too far up their own backsides to serve customers. Only time its worth coming here is in Summer when the Green and river are too busy.

After failing to get into the pub 30 minutes earlier while the rugby as it was banged out, I ventured across the road and then returned.
While the White Horse was full of families and kids the Red Cow was very different and much more "grown up".
Victorian painted glass panels behind the bar, with the beer selection being St Austall's Tribute, Young's Bitter & Twickenham Redhead on hand pump.
A very decent pub that I aim to come back to in the near future...great position on the main road and a short stroll from Richmond station.

If you want to see how Youngs can wreck a pub come here. Went in recently on a Monday evening, place deserted, TVs and loud music, uninterested bar staff and bad beer (Winter Warmer, which to give them credit they changed without complaint). I remember when the Red Cow was a proper pub...

Felt for the staff in the early evening on Friday it was packed. All beers were tip top. Great stuff.

Winter warmer sold out today but the Tribute was fine. Amiable staff and customers. Almost worth the walk out of town.

Youngs pub situated outside of Richmond Town Centre on the Upper Richmond Road. The area where the pub is situated was formerly known as Marshgate with cattle grazing on the marshes then present - hence the pub's name.
Older drinkers may remember that, in the early 70's, this pub had snob screens similar to those at The Lamb in Holborn, but, sadly, these are long gone. Another refurbishment several years ago unfortunately removed virtually all of the pub's remaining Victorian character, apart from several impressive coloured mirrors which still form an integral part of the central bar back. Ironically, this latest refurbishment has resulted in the reintroduction of a few replica snob screens in an attempt to create an intimate "snug" type area immediately round the back of the bar.
The pub is now what Youngs would probably describe as a "contemporary traditional" pub, with pastel shades everywhere and a mixture of tall perches and sofas supplementing the more traditional tables and seating. Unlike many of Young's recent rebrandings however, this is still very much first and foremost a pub and televised sport still features prominently. There's several bedrooms upstairs providing B&B accommodation.
The pub seems to fluctuate in and out of the GBG - it's not in the current edition, but it was for the previous year - 2009.
My recent visit found the Winer Warmer - � 3.30p - in fine form.
Formerly a haunt of thieves and vagabonds in its Victorian days apparently, it's now a reasonably friendly pub, principally serving the local community. There's a more welcoming atmosphere in here than in the more impersonal Town Centre pubs, but, that aside, it's difficult to make out much of a case for specifically seeking this one out.

Beer was spot on and the Young's Special actually has more of the old Ram Brewery hop character than when Wells started butchering it. Nice pub in a nice location for public transport but not in Richmond centre. Original, Duechars and Bombardier all good.

The refurb has reduced the space for individuals as the tables are narrow and my man poured his pint over me by accident..However there were more individuals in would be their answer.
The new Youngs ordinary seems to have been made lighter in color and hoppier and was a good pint here. The Special is nothing like the old Special and just a plain Brown beer albeit well served here.
The Duechars IPA had strong diacetyl poisoning but their own stand at the GBBF 2 years ago supplied worse. So I think we can blame the beer not the pub.
Interior 1 step back Beer 1 step up... Still a good pub to meet people after work away from the centre of Richmond but still well connected.

Not too bad a refurbishment by Youngs standards. The bar back with the splendid whisky mirrors has been preserved and I do like the new mini "snug" at the back, even if the newly introduced snob screens are only replicas.
In many other respects, its a typical Youngs refurb - pastel shades and those awful high chairs and long tables that give it a bit of a chain pub feel to it.
My pint of Youngs yesterday was spot on by Bedford standards

This is a down-to-earth but comfortable pub in an area where such things are are on the ground. The only pub in Richmond where this northerner felt at home. The Youngs real ale was good. Food looked tasty and home made. Locals were friendly enough.
I would definitely go back here.

Like this pub a lot. Saturday lunch time packed with foootie fans watching the screen and tipsters continually going to the bookies across the road. During the week a godd mix of ages and people. The beer is very good and you get real food, er like chips and white bread and butter. Probably not for the Richmond jackets and thongs brigade but a really good place for inter generational conversation!!

After a tipsy route march from The Britannia carrying the blonde barmaids message of greeting to Phil, we arrived at the Red Cow, a nice looking Victorian-style bar and a Youngs-tied house.
After passing on the message to Phil (a thoroughly nice chap) we got our (expensive) pints and took a seat. The inside of the place is certainly *quite* pretty, but modern flashing fruitmachines and odd lighting sit uncomfertably with other aspects of the interior. My pint of Special was also not particularly special either.
If in Richmond for a crawl, go once to sample the interior, but I can't imagine wanting to stay beyond a pint most nights.
Sup up friends, we're off to the Orange Tree before we get the train...

Early Victorian pub on a prominent corner in a residential area not far from the centre of Richmond. Interesting building but fairly average pub - worth a visit if passing but not worth a major detour. Young's tied house, beers in good enough condition.

Had the delight of staying here for a whole weekend recently. They have accommodation upstairs. Excellent beer and atmosphere. Just the right distance from Richmond. Well worth a visit even if you can't spare the whole weekend!

Average but wholesome pubby food, pub ideal for people with beards (men and women), great Youngs beers. Pleasent wood and carpets traditional pub feel.

Do it Do it Do it. ... Do it! I visit this pub about once a week and never fail to have a good time. It caters for all sorts and thinks it does a great job at being a great pub!

Visited this place for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised. Staff were excellent and the locals were friendly. If you want to escape the endless ponce and ruggerfied centre of Richmond, then this place is your answer. Top marks.

The best pub ever! It's like a home from home, all the staff are very friendly (Phil & Tom are tops!) and most of the punters too! There's always someone to have a laugh with. Great drink, great food & great people (the live music is always a superb night out too)- what more could you ask for?

Fine traditional pub, well worth a visit. The Youngs beer is usually in good nick.
In response to Bob The Binman, yes, sadly the snob screens at this pub have gone, but there is still much to admire, particularly the mirrors behind the bar. No sign of the piano, sadly, but they do live music occasionally at weekends I think. Bob, you are also right, The Lamb in Holborn still has snob screens, as does The Churchill Arms in Kensington, a well - known Fullers pub, which is well worth a visit.

My first memories are visiting the Red Cow's Off Licence when I was 4 or 5 (1959-60) whilst at a Christmas Party round the corner in Hyde Road (now part of the trendy 'Alberts'). In those days the house had an outside WC and scullery!
Back to the RED COW....I used to drink in here back in the 1970's and it still had a Public bar at the alleyway end and glass 'snob-screens'...I guess those great attributes have been swept aside in the march for 'improvements'. I think that the Young's pub The Lamb, in Lamb's Conduit St, WC2, still has snob screens.
Is there still a piano for sing songs in the Red Cow? Email me if you'd like to discuss Richmond boozers of the 70's.

One of the few proper pubs left in Richmond. The food changes daily - is so good you'lll never waste time in a 'gastro-type' pub again!

Great pub. Probably the best in the Richmond circuit. Friendly staff, top guv espesially when three parts doing the tuesday quiz. Had the Lancashire Hot Pot the other night... Superb!

Quite and old style. Good for post work drink with mates. Locals line the bar, yet not threatening. Beer is decent and a good place to avoid Richmind young-come-loaded-come-load types.

Despite the suggestion of communist leanings reflected in their name and exterior motif, this pub has a diverse range of beers and a warm cosy atmosphere. When football is showing the sound tends to be overly loud and the lights could do with a dimming. That aside it's not bad.
Good for: a week night.
