oh dear lord can it get any worse. I used to work here what a dive ive since joined the british army an infantaryman and i would still feel theatened in this hole. this place brings the whole area down. struggled to give it a rating of 0.

Union jacks and tattoos everywhere - you only have to look at the clientelle to see what kind of pub this is. Avoid.

I have to admit I'd had a few when I went in here so cannot really remember too much. It is an attractive pub both inside and out and had it's fair share of colourful characters. The London Pride at �1.50 was a bargain and in reasonable condition.

Undrinkable beer, threatening atmosphere (even during the afternoon), clientele seems to be largely made up of local street drinkers and other dodgy characters. Shame, could be a really good pub. Avoid.

Four real ales all at �1.50, this pub has still to be rediscovered by the masses, their loss I have to say.

This pub is gradually turning it self round since the re-furbish. I never realised how big this pub is until recently. A lot of potential that seems to be going to waste.

The most improved pub in the area . Hobgoblin is on a typical wholesalers list real ale. Courage Best, London Pride and Flowers. All in reasonably good nick.

The silly clamping has stopped. The surly attitude of the staff is no more. They now have real ale, and they now have an experienced landlord with a good track record. The pub I visited in April 2008 was nothing like the reviews I had read for 2007 and earlier.

Re- opened , redecorated , a new landlord, 4 real ales. Far to early for a clear judgement. The beer is �1.50.

I can't say that I felt intimidated when I visited on Sunday lunchtime, but there's no real ale and the place has little to commend it.
It's a shame as it's a local landmark building

Honestopinion man was right: this place is hellish, it really is. It is the end of the world. Like Honestopinion, I too went back three, maybe four times. The locals' hostility is open, raw, and very real. They have a big, incorrectly-spelt sign on the pavement advertising "akomodation", or similar. There seems to be a very real sense that, at any moment, you may be glassed, or worse. I can't fathom why places like this exist. If I was a landlord, I'd be thrilled to bits to have decent types like me coming through the door. Every day I ride my motorbike along the little road to the east of the pub. And every day, I must avoid the foul-mouthed sods who leave the Swan and Sugarloaf.
I can accept poor architecture, scruffy interiors, and inebriation. But I can't live with the contemptuous feelng which pervades this place. Entering the place can curiously be a positive experience. Because when you're hidden in it's Wild West, frosted-glass world, it makes you feel so hopeless. Come out of it - even if your life is rock bottom - and you will feel like a new person.

Everyone must avoid this pub then perhaps something good will happen to it - the potential is enormous. I walked in and walked out again without even having a drink - so well done to those that stayed for a beer (you must be mad)! As someone else has mentioned as soon as you open the door it goes quiet and the 'locals' (nobody I have ever seen before despite being a 'local' all my life) stare at you - you can imagine that when we turned straight around and walked out when I saw there was no real ale on they gave some abuse! Avoid at all costs it really is as bad as the score that it has and rightly deserves!

The Swan and Sugarloaf in South Croydon has all the classical architecture and design of a delightful pre-war, fringe London public house. Situated in South Croydon, a funky area with some superb restaurants and eateries, you would have thought the Swan and Sugarloaf would prove to be an excellent location for some pre or post war drinks�.Sadly not. Upon entry you can rest assured you will be greeted with a glare by the locals�.reminiscent of the film ID. Then as you pass these delightful people F-ing and Jeff-ing about who they�d like to have sex with next or which person they�d like to beat up next you realise there is an odd aroma, not a mix of smoke and beer nor cigars and pipe smoke. Nope, the Swan & Sugarloaf actually shares the same aroma as urinal tablets! Yes, literally Eau de toilet quite literally.
Maybe the staff and management make a difference? Not on your Nelly, No smiles, no �hello what would you like? Just �YES� and your drinks are delivered to you with all the flair and panache of a Nissan Sunny.
Whilst sitting there for the last time in my life (3rd time, I thought I may be wrong initially. I wasn�t)I noticed that the mob of dim heavies in the corner were laughing at the three people whose cars they had just managed to clamp. After Listening to them they said they managed to clamp one guy who parked up, walked over to the shop across the road and picked up some cigarettes before walking into the bar for a drink�..5 minutes I�d estimate, they had clamped his car and approached him as he was ordering a beer completely oblivious to the �185 cash only clamp on his car. The reason for the clamp was that he hadn�t asked the landlords permission before leaving the premises to the shop across the road prior to ordering a beer!!!!
Worse still, the clampers then sat down with the staff and laughed and joked about it�..I would think they make more from the clamping than they do the bar.
So, the worst pub in Surrey? Easy, with a car park that costs �185 if you leave the premises for more that 45 seconds, locals that would have trouble spelling the word MENSA let alone joining, a whiff of urinal tablets, shiny carpets and the most hideous staff you are ever likely to see and the poorest service I�ve ever encountered. The Swan and Sugarloaf in South Croydon has to be the worst pub in Surrey�.possibly the worst in the UK! Not a bad Guinness though.

About time this building was given a good gutting and converted into a multi-bar establishment catering to young and old and those in between. Currently it is on par with some joint Charles Bukowski might have staggered out of during a mild nightmare. I've never met anyone who has lasted more than half-a-pint in the place, including moi. However, it does do bed and breakfast.....ha ha ha, the mind reels trying to imagine what that must be like.

Lovely building, but terrible dump of a pub. Needs a total refurb and new management. If you love a good pub with good beer - this isn't one.

Worth visiting just to admire the side bar with the glass pannelling depicting swans and the unusual seating by the fireplace, but a well - known local landmark pub like this on the main road should be much better than this. Management need to make more effort, it seems clear to me. No real ale on, so had to have the draught Guinness.

This is a proper grotty old gaff. Dodgy as arseholes too. Beer is reasonably priced though.

We went to this pub last Saturday after playing golf up at Selsdon Park. It was the first pub we passed coming from Selsdon going into Croydon so decided to stop off there. We parked up the car in the pub car park and crossed the road to get some cash. I went in the pub to order a couple of drinks. It was grotty inside, with awful decor and some paint was peeling off the tops of the walls. The few people in there were shady looking to say the least so we decided to take our drinks and sit outside. Once sat outside, my friend noticed his car had been clamped. We spoke to the landlord and he told us he had clamped it. The reason he gave was that if we had read the sign it says that 'if parking in the car park you have to ask the owners permission'. This sign was right at the back of car park and was in tiny, barely legible writing. It cost him �150 to get the clamp off. This pub (barring a few locals) is not interested in making money selling beer or food but is instead charging people �150 a go to get their car back (a fairly lucrative sideline)! Don't fall into the same trap as we did. I haven't posted my name as such people i fear could be capable of much worse.

Went one night on a friday and they had Karaoke which to be honest was a bit under standard for a karaoke, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves which in the end is all that matters I suppose. Will go back again but not on a karaoke night

this pub has an array of friendly locals and a land lord & lady that make everyone feel welcome they have re-introduced live entertainment on fridays and have regular karaokes. a great place to drink alone or in a crowd
