user reviews of the Tiger, Denmark Hill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

So, when the discerning pub goer finds both the Stormbird and The Hermit's Cave already aheave at five thirty of a Friday evening, what does one do in Camberwell, kind gentlefolk?

Well, the Tiger, a mere hop and a skip away, was amiably chatty, relaxed, and there were still seats to be had. Music pulsed away quietly.

There were three ales, the Butcombe's Original was in fine nick too, and it wasn't pricey either, although, as these things do, the exact figure eludes me now.

As is standard now in many pubs, the lights were low, so leave your newspaper behind.

My reliable informers tell me that this pub is noted for very late night opening, and gets quite lively as the evening wears on.

All in all it was a happy find though, and worth seven, I think.

I wasn't intending to do an Antic pub crawl, but this was the third in a row of the chain's pubs for me. Another trendy place that was packed on a Saturday night, with all kinds of people. Some were watching the live football, some were dining, others were just there for the conversation. The beers were Butcombe Bitter, Moles The Tunneler & Castle Rock Snowhite. Ok, but not the best Antic pub I've been to.

Went in Monday 27 January. Went to bar to order 2 meals and bottle of wine. I broke my neck 2 years ago so can't move my spine or neck, doesn't look good. Stood at bar for 10 minutes while punters behind me got served. When my partner complained she was met with sniggers. Message is don't expect to get served here if you are handicapped in any way or don't meet the customer profile.

i really like this pub, it was my local when i spent a few months living nearby late 2011/early2012. The beer selection (ale that is) is always changing, the barstaff are pleasant - particularly the dark haired one, and i adore the bar snacks.

They make their own pork scratchings which are sublime if teeth shattering, and their mini sausage rolls at 1 quid a pop are excellent.

They also have wifi (via the cloud), show the football in an alcove, so you can avoid it, or partake as you so choose, and it's just generally a very pleasant boozer. Only titchy first world complaint - no power points to juice up your flagging phone or ipad.

Now owned by Antic Ltd and in the GBG. On Thursday they had 4 handpumps but only Caledonian Flying Scotsman and Adnams Bitter while I was there. Relaxing place for a drink late afternoon/early evening.

A lovely building and comfortable interior with character and clear views of the hustle and bustle around Camberwell Green. It's been competely transformed by "going back in time" to its original identity as the Tiger. Wadworth 6X, Young's Ordinary, Deuchars IPA and Sharp's Doom Bar were available on handpump. I was served a decent pint of 6X in a dimple pint pot @3.10.

Since changing hands and becoming The Tiger this place is 100% improved and totally different.
Readers should ignore all the previous comments, because these relate to a different pub.
The Tiger is warm, relaxed, fresh and an oasis in Camberwell Green. Drinks and food are reasonably priced, the staff are friendly and the meal I enjoyed there this week was good.
Its still a new team so I guess service could have been a little quicker, but overall this is definitely worth a visit.
I am sure this will be stiff competition to the near-by Bear, Grand Union and Sun & Doves>

I love this pub, yeh it,s a bit near the knuckle, but i have always found it to be great fun, friendly people, and never had no hassle. Im from up north so not a regular there, but i can only speak as i find:O)

Now with outside tables - cafe society comes to the Buckle!
sophiett - 18 Jun 2007 16:30
dodgy - to be approached with caution
se5live - 3 Jun 2007 23:14
Brilliant pub......any pub that makes me laugh is worth at least one beer in. Last time I went in my mate got a white wine and soda - lovingly served in a pint glass. That randomness should be applauded in this crazy PC world.
Eaststreetclown got it spot on - everyone should visit this place once in a lifetime.
followthebear - 18 Apr 2007 17:39
Old pub, new look. It's friendly staff make a change from the former surly bunch & it a convenient pub to enjoy the cricket & grab a quick pint on the way home.
ianmac - 30 Mar 2007 09:30
Ah yes I heard it had new management - maybe we can look forward to its conversion into an All Bar One type place?!
Simon28 - 22 Dec 2006 16:41
This pub has just been taken over by experienced operators, Sky has been reinstalled along with a nice new shiny plasma so give it a try!
ricodredd - 19 Dec 2006 13:05
This is the sort of boozer everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. You wouldn't believe some of the carryson on a Saturday night. Some plain clothes police should pop in there some weekend.
anonymous - 10 Sep 2006 11:26
Complete and utter sh*thole. Scally central - how this place has managed to hang on to its licence I'll never know. Someone, somewhere must be paying someone off. Even the alkies on Camberwell Green wouldn't go in here.
withnail - 9 Jun 2006 11:12
Dire Dire Dire - there is absolutely nothing to recommend this pub. Go to the Catsle or Funky Monkey if you want late night drinking in Camberwell
anonymous - 17 Apr 2006 23:48
hey phil. the silver buckle where can i start? ok apart from the obvious it has changed maybe not for the best but its tryin to head in the right direction. the management need to realize that more promotions on beer will bring in a better class of clientel, andd the karaoke needs refreshing its getting quite tiresome now. the bar staff need to change their attitudes as they sometimes have been quite rude to me. i would prefer to stay in and stab myself in the eye with a rusty hook, than go here but any port in a storm they say. TAKE NOTE MANAGER!!!
flyboy - 28 Mar 2006 15:21
Camberwell as an area is half and half. Yes, there is Camberwell Grove. But then there are a load of estates which are not the greatest. The pubs in Camberwell cater to the whole market. This one, frankly, is rough as f***.
anonymous - 24 Mar 2006 12:26
Its funny all the bad reviews its anonymous its a rigth tho say anythig but dont you have bols tho put your name on it and the staff its not rude i was a staff and i am not a rude person
Anina - 21 Feb 2006 14:06
HI Phil :) just say hello to everybody for me will you? Thanks
Anina - 14 Feb 2006 11:58
I don't know what all the fuss is about - it's a great pub! You lot who have written bad reviews need to state if you were there for just one evening. It's been my local for 7 years now and yes, I've seen many changes. But it has got better.
I realise that the pub was being used for a long while by a sector of teh public that would swamp the bar to watch 'free' sky sports but not a drink in sight! This I found annoying - it's a buisness after all, so wake up and smell the coffee (available untill 3pm!). Many times I would partake in an after work (yes that's right - I work to pay for my drinks) and couldn't even get a seat to enjoy my beer due to the bar being deluged by non-paying, loud mouthed, ignorant and arragant people who would only use the pub on a sports match. Who needs them anyway? I was delighted when the sports went. As an onlooker, I saw tha abuse the staff had to endure from these free-loaders who couldn't get the free fix of sports any more. Good luck to them, let the government supply them with free sky sports, they seem to get everything else.
The pub has changed, and for the better. It's like a bub used to be. A meeting place to socialise and enjoy friends company and actually hear your own conversation.
More to come - I'm just off to work now, Jesus, mary & Joseph I said it again WORK!
macci - 8 Feb 2006 05:11
CHARGING 3 ON THE DOOR BECAUSE PEOPLE COMING IN WON'T BUY DRINKS AND ITS OPEN TILL 2AM.HOW MUCH DO THE FUNKY MONKEY CHARGE OR RED STAR.
anonymous - 7 Feb 2006 17:50
Now seem to be charging 3 for entry on Saturday nights - what is the world coming to?
anonymous - 14 Nov 2005 14:58
Chr1st I've taken my chances in this one over the years... They haven't even let me on the karaoke yet and I already have visions of being knifed here.

Good laugh though. Of course it can be rough: this is Camberwell not Clerkenwell for gawd's sakes!
shw500 - 17 Oct 2005 15:36
Rubbish. Awful traditional pub trying to cash in on the trendy bar explosion in Camberwell with a few 'cool' beers. Avoid.
the_sarah_day_fan_club - 19 Sep 2005 18:15
Good for fights outside
anonymous - 6 Jul 2005 00:12
don't like this place.
keep well clear if you are female.
one of the bouncers is that dubious character involved with the goldsmiths a few years back...
sarah_pilay - 12 May 2005 03:13
Ah the mighty 'Buckle - on a recent visit on a Saturday night the two women in our party were propositioned within 30 seconds of entering the pub, it was absolutely heaving and everyone seemed to be very very drunk.
anonymous - 27 Apr 2005 11:46
Yikes. If you run a martial arts class and are looking for a good way to test your senior students, by all means invite them to this pub... Handbags will be stolen, pints will be spilt, and your clothes will smell like you've smoked a carton of Gaulloise. No thanks.
Wixy - 6 Feb 2005 13:06
Great atmosphere
Freindly atmosphere
Gay friendly
Good kareoke
Lee Hape - 7 Oct 2004 16:38
Interesting & cheap
Taidg - 1 Sep 2004 19:54
From a females perspective the Buckle is a bit of a nightmare if you're not on your guard, men tend to be a bit like Flies on shit! They hover until you are by yourself and pounce.

Most of the time they will leave you alone when you tell them to piss off, others you just have to ignore.

The music is excellent if you like the caribbean vibe and the place never fails to give you a laugh.

Fights are often and can be quite severe but the bouncers in there have it under control. Just remember to take a deep breath for courage before you walk in the door!
Elaine Smith - 10 May 2004 12:13
Rough as a badgers bottom. BUT open till 1am and worth a visit if your in the area and have had quite a few already...otherwise it's not for the faint hearted!
Craig - 2 Apr 2004 16:10
the Buckle ROCKS! Noel and the crowd are a real welcoming bunch- kareoke resonates relentlessly monday to sunday, sang by locals who more often than not display true musical genius. screw you pop idols!!
george - 19 Mar 2004 11:25
Interesting... Like going back to another era when pubs were all traditional locals. Full of interesting characters who I'm sure are all very pleasant to talk to but can be a bit scary to the newly arrived Camberwell resident. Always seem to be fights outside on Saturday and Sunday mornings 2-3am when I pass it on my way home from the Redstar.
Simon - 10 Mar 2004 12:56
Never been but sounds alright according to the local CAMRA man, Parsnip.
